It was the middle of Greenleaf, hot and dry. Willowfur had been given the task of patrolling the clan’s territory. He wasn’t too pleased about it because he had previously been lying in the sun and cleaning his fur, though he is not very motivated he still is true to the clan and gets on with his duties.
It was half way through his shift and he decided to take a break by a small stream to cool off, Willowfur took a few sips of water when he heard a rustle of shrubs on the other side, he looked up but saw nothing. Closing his eyes, he sighed and began drinking again. He then heard the rustling again but this time before he looked up, the tom looked at a reflection of a young apprentice in the water. Willowfur stood up trying to use his size to intimidate the youngster however he could see that the cat was scared but was foolishly brave and stood his ground. This gave Willowfur enough time to examine the apprentice, it was a small calico tom not much older than 10 moons and not from Orchardclan but from a neighbouring clan.
“You do know that this is the border of Orchardclan?” Willowfur questioned this young cat’s intentions. The youngster nodded. Without warnings he crouched ready to pounce if the time called for it.
He then spoke,
“I am training to be a warrior and decided it was best to patrol our borders for enemy cats.” Willowfur looked at this cat and laughed. Shaking his head and sat down knowing that this young tom was no threat to him.
“I am not one to fight another especially in this peaceful time, also it’s not my policy to fight young arrogant apprentices. Don’t you know the warrior code, this is what your training to be isn’t… a warrior. It’s basic knowledge that all cats need to know. It states that an honourable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win their battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or if it is necessary for self-defence.”The youngster looked baffled, he wasn’t sure how to react to a confident cat like Willowfur, he gulped and sat down too trying to act relaxed and calm.
“I know the warrior code! I have been practicing and training to become the best and bravest warrior in our clan!”The young tom proclaimed, puffing up his chest. Willowfur shrugged,
Great another youngest with unrealistically large ambitions, he thought. Willowfur was never a motivated cat when he was young and didn’t strive to become the best, because he knew that it would be impossible for him. He particularly didn’t like other cats that shouted loud and proud about their strengths and accomplishments, that just wasn’t his style. Willowfur is more of a tactician and out witting his opponents, he knew strength was needed to be a good warrior, but it would only get you so far in life and he knew that at a very young age.
“You know kid, there is more to life then becoming a diehard warrior that goes out everyday to train, live your life a little while your young. Yes, becoming a warrior is impressive but at some point, you are going to hit a brick wall and reach your full potential in physical strength, you need mental strength as well.” The tom explained. Willowfur hated lecturing others, but a young cat like this had a lot of potential.
The apprentice concentrated on what Willowfur was saying, he knew that trying to understand the lesson and learning from this older tom would be valuable even if Willowfur was from another clan. He nodded, and asked,
“What sort of strength can I get from training my mind?”Willowfur looked around,
“Hmmm I guess it is important for fighting.”He looked over to the apprentice who was listening intently with eyes wide open.
“Knowing whether to fight or flee, its called the fight or flight response. Cats like you who know no difference will jump into a fight without thinking of the consequences and end up getting killed. Fleeing is just as good as a strategy as fighting, after all you can regroup with your clan and come back stronger. It takes practice and it depends on each situation you are faced with.”Willowfur licked his paw showing no aggression towards the young tom, when he suddenly made eye contact and smiled.
“How about I test you youngster and see what you got?”The apprentice looked shocked and unprepared, but he wasn’t going to waste this opportunity. He nodded.
“If your clan was flighting an enemy and you were told to look after an injured comrade, but was confronted by 2 enemy cats who where willing to fight you and kill the injured, what would you do?”The young cat puffed up his chest and spoke with confidence,
“I would fight! And protect my clan mate, I would probably be stronger than the other two if I do enough training, after all that’s the pride of a warrior!”Willowfur spat at the cat,
“PRIDE isn’t helpful when you are dead!”He exclaimed with rage!
“If you fight one of the cats then the other would kill your friend, but if you protect your friend than the cats would fight you both. You would ultimately die, think carefully about the situation.”The apprentice looked down with guilt, he was unexperienced how should he know what to do.
“What should I do then? How can I fight and protect my clan member?”The youngster was getting desperate after his confidence was crushed.
“Use your surroundings, observe what is going on in that situation, use a distraction. For example, a day like today, dry soil.”He padded the soil and a dust of ground puffed up into the air. The young cat looked confused not understanding what the tom was trying to say.
“Dust! use the dust! Hit up some dust into the eyes of the enemy to blind them temporally. And use that as an escape to pick up you clan member to flee.” The apprentice looked stunned he had never thought about using a strategy like this one.
“But surely that is considered cowardly!”The youngsters looked concerned and not convinced of what Willowfur was saying.
“Listen, using a strategy like this isn’t cowardly, it doesn’t break any rules. You’re just using you surrounding to your advantage, after all its better than death. Also, you did what you were told to do, help and defend your wounded clan mate! You weren’t supposed to fight, and you would have died in that situation anyway. Besides after you have taken you injured comrade back to the clan, then you can…”At that moment the apprentice interrupted Willowfur and said
“And regroup with the clan and come back stronger.”The youngster nodded knowing now what the older tom was saying before, he looked embarrassed and couldn’t look Willowfur in the eyes.
“Looks like you’re finally getting it, your sounding more like a warrior now, good that’s what I want to hear. A realistic strategy,”Willowfur smiled at the tom impressed with his response.
“Now scram! An apprentice like you shouldn’t be doing a warrior’s job with out a mentor. You are too young and inexperienced. What would you have done if I attacked you?”The warrior stood up and looked down at the young cat, the apprentice got up to his feet and smiled at the warrior, closing his eyes as thanks for giving him a new insight. He turned and started to run back into the shrubs, but stopped just before and looked round to the warrior again,
“What is your name?”Willowfur eyes widen he never expected the young cat to show respect like this and ask for his name.
“Willowfur, I am a warrior of Orchardclan however I was given the nickname of The Tactician of Orchardclan.”The apprentice eyes light up he was now inspired to become just like Willowfur a respected member of the clan. He jumped into the shrubs leaving the older tom by the stream. Willowfur turned and strolled on back to his duty of patrolling the boarders, he smiled thinking to himself.
