xxxxxxOkay, today was the day she'd do it. No turning back. She was brave. Slowly the female Viscet looked over the side of the cliff to the waves below and recoiled; okay, maybe not brave enough for this, but she wanted to be. Her friends were all playing in the ocean below, but that's not who she was concerned about. Looking behind her, her aqua eyes settled on her crush:
Maracai. The Stormchaser stood against his jeep, dark fur shining in the summer sun as he showed his newest images to a group of girls who were way too clingy. Brigid knew they were just feigning interest; all they wanted was to be his girlfriend for his money and popularity, and it made her sick. She wanted to be his girlfriend, too, but her reasons? She adored him, was truly interested in his work, and wished she could be as fearless and brave as he was. She was also plain and boring in her everyday life; what interest could he ever have in her? Regardless, her pride and her emotions never let her pass up a moment to try. This time it was just extreme, she decided as she looked back down. She steeled herself and took a step closer to the edge. She could do this, she could do this...
xxxxxx"
Eyyy Brigid! I knew you'd try it! Jump!" The voice of one of her friends, Jackson probably, came from the surf below, and she gulped. Now her indecisiveness was blown. She had to jump. Taking a deep breath, Brigid turned back for a brief moment to see Maracai staring at her with a wide-eyed expression before she looked forward, steeled herself one more time, then leapt. In mid air she turned and pointed double finger-guns at Maracai, then dropped to the water.
xxxxxxThe fall was terrifying. She was plummeting so fast and the water would be like hitting concrete and if she'd had just a little more time she probably would have burst into tears. But all too suddenly she was engulfed by the water and the speed of her fall carried her deep, just into the undertow at the base of the cliff. She tumbled for a bit, just enough to disorient her, and by the time she'd righted herself she was running out of air. She'd never been scared of the ocean, but when you're face to face with drowning, anyone would be terrified.
xxxxxxSuddenly the surface she was struggling to swim to was disturbed by a dark shadow, and she felt arms slide around her torso. She clutched onto the mystery man for dear life, but through her blurry vision she could just barely make out electric blue markings, and her heart soared. The two broke the surface effortlessly, leaving Brigid a coughing mess as she tried desperately to clear the saltwater from her lungs. Maracai held her tightly as she composed herself, but to her surprise never let go. "
What were you doing jumping from a cliff that size? I know you've never jumped before, that was way too dangerous," he said, voice laced with concern.
xxxxxx"
Well, I was trying to impress you," she said between coughs.
xxxxxx"
Impress me? Now why would a pretty girl like you be trying to impress little old me?"
xxxxxx"
Because you're, uh, you're handsome, funny, interesting, and I, uh, I've liked you for a while now," she murmured softly.
xxxxxx"
Well you could have just told me instead of risking that huge jump!" He teased, flashing that signature grin. "Besides, I've liked you for quite a bit too, I just thought that I was too wild. I'd be ecstatic to have a girl like you."
xxxxxx"
But those girls-"
xxxxxx"
What about them? I just let them think they have a chance because I know they're not serious. They don't want a real relationship. Now, how about we go back to shore and get a drink? I'm sure you've had enough cliff jumping for one day," he grinned, and her heart fluttered. She nodded softly, face lifting into a smile.
xxxxxx"
I'd like that."
xxxxxxSlowly the two began to swim back to shore, ignoring the whistles and catcalls from their group of friends. It was at that moment that what she'd just done really set in, and she couldn't stop the wide grin that formed. She felt invincible, like a true warrior claiming what she wanted. Man, she still hated heights with every piece of her being. But that? That was so worth it.

Take chances,
make mistakes.
That's how you grow.
Pain nourishes your courage.
