Kalon #907 [European Mink]

Postby yenneii » Mon Mar 13, 2017 12:54 am

Main Adopts

Alright, sorry for the toned down design, but this comp is a little more serious than my other ones.

Image

See this cutie? This is the European mink, sometimes known as the Russian mink. Minks, or any member of the Mustelidae family for that matter are some of my favourite animals. They're intelligent, charismatic, and in my opinion; really cute.

Unfortunately, European minks are loosing their territory to other competitors. This combined with other human factors has reduced their population by 50% over the past 3 generations (one decade). Further analysis of these factors raises the prediction that over the next 3 generations, 80% of the European mink population will go extinct.

European minks are critically endangered. They need our help.

Here are some sources, and conservation projects:
WAZA // RED LIST // WIKIPEDIA // ACTIVITY

I'm not asking anyone to go out of your way to donate money, since that's exclusive.
However one thing that everyone can do, is raise awareness, or educate yourself.

This competition will be a raffle. However there are a couple of mandatory steps.

Image

1. Find an endangered species.
2. Check if that animal is threatened, endangered, or extinct. (please leave a source)
3. If the animal is threatened, endangered, or extinct, tell me one or more reasons why this is happening (please leave a source)
4. Tell me what we can do as a community to help save these animals, or what is being done to help save them.

1. Your species: Fossa
2. Conservation status (source please!): Threatened (Vulnerable) [source]
3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? (source please!): Deforestation in Madagascar, subsequently being shot as pests because a lack of food in their natural habitat leads to them attacking livestock. [source]
4. What can we do/what is being done to help?: Help build fossa-proof cages for chickens and other livestock to both protect the food of locals and teach fossas that approaching villages is no longer a good way to find food, decreasing the amount of fossas being shot as pests. Fund conservation projects to prevent more of Madagascar's forests being destroyed, as this is the greatest problem for fossas.

First Paragraph
3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? (source please!):
Number one, they are hunted for their ivory tusks, along with their cousin, the African Elephant
Number two, their habitat is slowly shrinking
Source
4. What can we do/what is being done to help?:
You can raise awareness for the Asian Elephants, or elephants in general, or donate to any conservation site
People around the world have been doing so,in hopes that the Asian Elephant can be saved from the "brink of extinction," as most people call it.

1. Your species: amur leopard
2. Conservation status:
critically endangered
here
3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? :
Amur leopards are endangered for many reasons, but here are a few.
hunting
Russin hunters kill more deer than they are allowed to. Leaving most Amur leopards starving, they are also some times caught in hunters traps or shot.
habitat loss
As people start to make more structures or anything human made. It always usually requires land. Where do they get their land? From animals habitats, and sadly this species has been attacked by this.
forest fires
More fires have occured around there habitat because of local villagers.
The source. More information can be found there.

4. What can we do/what is being done to help?:
We are currently trying to help this species. Sadly only 30-35 individuals are in the wild, and roughly 300 are in captivity. Here are some examples of how were helping them.
Research on the species
We are researching more about the species and try to educate the public about this species
Fire-Control
We can try to reduce fires happening in there habitat
Re-introducing them to the wild.
We can try to re-introduce them to the wild. That way they can produce, and hopfully there will be more of them to declare them as a stable species
Population Monitoring
Tracking how many there are in the wild, chips, cameras, anything we can do to track them and learn more about them.
Source used, learn more about the Amur leopard there.

                        3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct?:
The Saola is threatened mainly by hunting. [source]
                        4. What can we do/what is being done to help?:
Donation, awareness and research are currently our best ways to get involved in helping the Saola! Visit http://www.savethesaola.org to learn more!

1. Your species:
Javan Rhinos
🦏
2. Conservation status (source please!):
They are Critically Endangered with about only 60 still alive
https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/javan-rhino
🦏
3. Why are they threatened/endangered/extinct? (source please!):
REDUCED GENETIC DIVERSITY
The smaller the population size, the harder it is for the species to make a comeback

NATURAL DISASTERS
The National Park the rhinos are staying in could be destroyed in almost seconds because of tsunamis or explosion

INVASIVE SPECIES
Arenga palm is a plant that covers 50% of the park and competes with the Rhinos for the food they eat

DISEASE
Even though the death of four rhinos seem small (due to disease thought to be spread by cattle), with barely 60 rhinos still surviving, they need all the rhinos they can get
https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/javan-rhino
🦏
4. What can we do/what is being done to help?:

EDUCATION
Not only are others educating people about this, but scientists are educating themselves. Because this is still a relatively new species

Res with Javan rhinos

Image - the sumatran tiger is a critically endangered species, with only 400-500 left in the wild.
two of the main causes for this is deforestation and poaching. the forests that these tigers thrive in are
being knocked down to create room for plantations and settlements. the vegetation is being knocked d
own and removed quicker then we can grow it, meaning before long their entire habitat will be destro
yed. the prey they hunt will also be dying due to habitat loss, meaning starvation is another factor tha
t can be considered for making this species endangered. another serious cause of the sumatran tiger b
ecoming endangered is poaching. people hunt them for nothing more than their own benefit. around 40
sumatran tigers are poached every year, which is equivalent to 8%.
[source]

Image - the wwf is doing a number of things to help this species of animal. they are
influencing the governments land-use planning. the wwf had managed to get the government to declare a sect
ion of land called the tesso nilo a protected area, meaning that people are not allowed to poach any animals t
here. the wwf has made six prioritised landscapes for tiger hunting to be declared protected in the tiger recov
ery program. you can help protect these wonderful creatures by adopting a tiger for $55!
