I wrestled the prickly, persistent, seeds with my fingers. I tried to pull the hair out from in between the tiny spines, but what I was doing only seems to make it worse. Jax yelped as I gave a harsh tug in exasperation. I quickly relaxed my grip and gently patted the near-matted fur down.

"I'm sorry, that's definately the last time I'm letting you loose in that park." Maybe an hour prior to this moment I had decided to let Jax have a nice break from training and went with him to a local dog park. The one we usually went to had recently been closed since it's recent pesticide spraying and I didn't see the harm in going to a different one.

Turns out I was very wrong to assume nothing bad would happen since after the visit on our walk home I noticed at least a dozen burs stuck in Jax's tail. That's where I found myself now, kneeling next to Jax trying to gently pluck the burs out to no avail. The soft, fine, hair of his tail had gotten so entangled in the burs I feared that I'd just have to give up and have to take him to the groomer.

As a last resort I pulled out a wide-toothed comb I had designated as Jax's to try and comb out the burs. Carefully, and slowly, I moved the comb through the fur of his tail. Repeatedly the comb would snag on a particularly stubborn bur and Jax would yelp out in pain. Slowly, but surely, the burs came out one by one thanks to the comb.

"Jax, no, down!" I shouted as Jax knocked me onto my back, giving me extra kisses in thanks for removing the spiky balls of pain from his tail. I huffed out a laugh and willed him to stop his licking for a second. "You're welcome, you big goof. Now would you mind getting off of me?"


(Not the best by any means, but I've never had to gets burs off of anything, let alone my dog's fur, so excuse me if my writing sounds ignorant to the way burs actually behave. I tried my best, and I hope you liked it none-the-less!)

I could feel a cold nose nudge the inside of my ear. I withheld the urge to shudder at the slimy sensation and merely huffed as I nudged away the overeager nose and tried to focus on my task. I jumped with a sputter when, in retaliation, an even slimier tongue invaded my ear canal. "Okay, down, down!"

I pushed the muzzle away with a firmer hand this time, and scowled as I turned away from the messy tail I was trying to pick clean. Keyword on trying here. Between the gaps of my fingers, Lyra peeked up at me with wide, innocent bi-colored eyes. Ooh boy.

"You brought this on yourself, you know."

Cue a slow, innocuous blink. Didn't even think her pupils could grow any larger, she was faking so hard.

My expression flattened. "You know for a fact that's not gonna work on me."

I gave her props for holding out for an extra thirty seconds before she ceremoniously gave up with a dramatic huff, and settled her head down on my lap. Well, settled as much as she physically could. The Kier didn't even stop moving in her sleep. What a drama queen. Sighing with relief, I turned my attention to finally cleaning out her matted fur. The rest of her cow-spotted pelt was conditioner-soft and silky, fresh from a bath and smelling like soft cotton and lavender, but the one thing I couldn't accomplish was cleaning the prickly burrs out of the curls in her tail.

I expected more of a reaction from me trying to pick out the stubborn things, but I wasn't too surprised by Lyra's non-reaction. Considering how much she was squirming her upper body on my lap, I don't even think she could register the small pinpricks of pain in her perpetually contained excitement. Her happiness is contagious though. I withhold a small laugh as I try to keep the wiggly canine in my lap. Can't have her jumping in the bushes yet again. We do have a prelim show coming up soon.
