Every night the same dream would come to me, and every night it started out the same exact way. Let me try to elaborate for you...
I'd wake up along the shore of a desolate snowy beach. The only sound was the sound of waves crashing down on the shoreline. Looking up I'd realize I had suddenly become blind. And although I could not see the Aurora Borealis above, I could feel it somehow. I could tell how the bright colors showing against the blue and purple evening sky. Getting up I began to walk away from the ocean and towards the presence of nature. Even though I could not see, I could almost foresee what was ahead.
I would walk towards it, soaking wet in the cold environment. The only audible sound was the snow crunching under my paws. As I tread deeper into the woods I began to hear rustling in the bushes around me. Stopping in my tracks I'd listen for any sign of someone or something but I could never seem to pick up a trace.
Continuing to walk, every couple minutes I would pick up on the same rustling sound. Eventually it began to bother me, knowing I couldn't see what or who was there, or if anyone was even around. I began to walk faster through the woods until I was sprinting, the sound getting louder and ever closer to me. Finally I had come out of the forest, the sound no longer behind me.
Blinking once or twice I began to see things around me once again. My vision was blurred though and so I could only seem to make out shapes of things, but even the slightest bit of vision was better than none at all. The darkness within me seemed to rise when I was submerged in the darkness without any light that came from being able to see.
Trying to step forward I found myself quickly tumbling down a steep slope that I was unable to perceive before. Right before I hit the bottom where jagged, sharp rocks lay, my body suddenly stopped. At first I thought maybe time had stopped around me, but snow had started falling from the sky. Looking around, I finally noticed a dark blob approaching me. I couldn't understand what was happening but the next thing I knew I was floating through the air.
Finally my vision started to allow me to see that the blob approaching happened to be another Makoatl. I was unable to determine gender but soon enough I was being carried through the air and dropped onto the ground. Shaking my head to clear the fog around my brain I looked up at the face of the one who had saved me, but to no avail. No matter how hard I tried the only thing I could see was myself.
My brain was fuzzy but I followed quickly after him. Nothing made sense but I had to find out who had helped me. They looked just like I did, but they had psychic powers that I did not have. They couldn’t be me, or could they? I followed until he had led me back to the ocean where I began.
The other me pointed with a paw to the water and I looked to see my reflection, but it wasn’t me. No, the person I saw wasn’t even close to me. It was a dark shape but as I squinted, the darkness faded and a new picture appeared. As the colors swirled in the water I looked up towards the sky and a shooting star passed over and as I looked back down into the water, my shape was gone but the face of the one I loved looked right back at me.
Turning to the other me, I started to squint and I began to realize the one who had saved me wasn’t me, it was the one who I love. My true love. It was then, and only then I realized the entire time I had been looking down at the water I had slowly been turning to stone.
I had been enchanted by someone who looked like the one I loved, who was beautiful and elegant, but a witch. I had been lured in and caught by a witch. A single tear left my eye as I turned my face towards the sky and my head was engulfed by stone.
From there I watched the tear turn to ice and shatter against the ground as two shooting stars passed me overhead.
It was then, when the shooting stars had disappeared, I woke from my nightmarish slumber and realized that I had not found the one I loved, but hoped that every night I would fall asleep and have the same nightmare if I could only see her face one more time.
