The Unrequited love poem
"Three Years Later"
Rewind: Three Years Ago
Freshman Year of Junior High
A girl whose face is the picture of kindness in a storm
One half sweet and gentle, the other sorrow and despair
A voice so soft and subtle, a hint of a stutter on her lips
She, who becomes so precious in private, is reserved in company
The innocent touch as we embrace for the fifth time that day
The catches of the eye- but never kiss- only on the cheek
The soft words we speak- I wish this lasts forever
A month of separation turns to tragedy.
Fast Forward: Current Time
Summer Before Senior Year of High School
A name so lyrical becomes a symphony now
The echo to my ears that repeats when I least expect it
A broken record stuck on my favourite song
My heart aches for the original melody
They say you only love something more once it's gone
And I believe that that's true because...
I think I loved you. I still do.
When I think of the word Jade so many things comes to my mind
The jewel, the colour, the eyes, the fabric, the paint...
The name.
No matter how hard I try to advert my attention from the word's true meaning
I come back
Three years later my action still leave a bitter taste on my tongue
Like cake made with too much baking soda or salt instead of sugar
The only salt on my mind is like the sprinkling of it on a slug
It attacks my skin and leaves a nasty mark far from repair
It turns my aching brain from panic to despair
My salt is my weakness. The salt at myself for being stupid
I've dated men when I'd rather date a women
I've dated a nice guy when I'd rather date my ex.
My ex from three years ago.
Whose touch is far from my own embrace and whose eyes haunt me to this day
Whose voice still leaves an imprint in my ear, whose art is scarred into my mind
Whose love came to me and I lapped it up before spitting it aside
Jade
A name meaning more to me than my own
Screw my useless identity if I could just have her back
To hear her laugh and to see her blush after she sneezes kitten sneezes
The inspiration of my artistic ability
Last month the bracelet she made me broke
The frayed and worn rubber band just...snapped
But do not worry, I still kept all the beads, from the smallest to the biggest
You were always smaller than me
You gave them to me as a final goodbye before you left
And I wore is everyday until the elastic stretched
When I did not wear it, it was in my safest drawer
Always hanging onto the idea of you
How much I miss you.
Jade
Something more to me than a name
More than the jewel, the colour, the eyes, the fabric, the paint-
More to me than my last boyfriend
Who I let go in place of what I felt for you
Jade
You are more to be than words will ever say
Than touches could ever express
Than a song could ever sing
Than art could ever draw
You are more to me than anything
Even now
Three years later.
