"Hello? Anyone there?"
No reply.
Well. What now?
Thue hammered on the sliding door an extra time for good measure. It had a tendency of jamming, but they were quite sure that this wasn't the problem this time around. The light in the small cabin kept flickering on and off, periodically illuminating the mess the room had been reduced to: Pillows and bedding had been flung from the two bunks; books and electronics were scattered on the floor, most whole but a lot broken in pieces; the table and chairs were upturned; in the corner a teenager was splayed out on the floor with a gaming console in their hands and a dumbfounded expression on their face. Of course, that last part was nothing out of the ordinary.
Thue picked up their laptop from the floor and held their breath as they hit its power button. To their relief, it turned on without issue, but it seemed unable to connect to the Zodiac's main system. Which meant no way of checking on the AI network. And no way of finding out if anyone else were alive.
Closing the lid of the laptop, Thue looked around the room, their gaze eventually landing on a hole in the ceiling through which daylight fell into the room.
"Hey, Puaq," they said without looking away from the hole, "Tror du at du kan komme igennem dét hul?"
The teen looked up, hestitating before answering, "Okay, TJ, I have no idea what you just said."
Thue glanced at their kid, not sure if they were more annoyed by their lacking language proficiency or their insistence on calling them 'TJ'. They sighed and switched to English:
"I asked if you think you can squeeze through this hole up here. We need to find out where we are."
Puck followed Thue's pointing finger and got to their feet, "Through--you mean go outside!? But we have no idea what's out there, what if I get eaten by an alien or if the air is poisonous or something?"
"The alternative is staying in here indefinitely," Thue pointed out. "And don't worry, the atmosphere of wherever we are has already entered the room, so if it could kill us, we would be dead. I'm not asking you to go explore an unknown planet on your own, I just want you to climb outside and see if you can spot anyone."
"Anyone ..."
"Any humans, Puaq. Crew members."
"Fine," Puck finally conceded, letting Thue give them a boost to crawl through the narrow opening. They had to suck in their belly to get through, but the sight that met them outside would have knocked the air out of them anyway.
I'm on a different planet, they thought to themself as the realization hit them properly. They sat quietly on the metal roof, still slightly warm from the impact, as they took in the alien landscape with a fluttering lumb in their throat and their heart hammering in their chest. As far as they could see, Scorpio had been completely separated from the rest of the ship. Bits and scraps were spread around them, some smoking lightly. It wasn't until Thue called out to them from below that they remembered that they were supposed to look for people; but no one was in sight.
They raised their hands to their mouth and shouted out: "HELLO? WE NEED HELP, PLEASE!"
