I guess it could also be argued that back isn't a fair because you can only back a horse a set amount of distance, but they could walk for hours (or at least quite a bit of time), trot for quite a distance, canter for quite a distance and so on, but...))

Just to give my own opinion on the whole thing; Different gaits usually have different beats, speed and leg movement, which is why I wouldn't consider back or gallop extra gaits personally. I know gallop is used commonly though, but it's really no different from canter, it's just canter but faster. And back is just a change of direction, the gait is still walk (or maybe trot or canter if the horse is talented lmao). If back was a gait, leg yielding and other movements in other directions could be considered that as well, and that makes no sense. In my opinion. You're free to think whatever you want cx
