Short story; Mythra Muses at NightNighttime was a strange time, Mythra mused. They said it was a quiet time, but watching from her owner's window at 10 o'clock at night, there were cars whooshing everywhere, loud parties, and whooshes. And there was the strange box that had been found by her in a moment of wakefulness. Like now. While she wanted to investigate, nighttime was more interesting to watch at the moment.
A light caught her eye. Across the street was a neon sign for a flower shop, with a logo for a rose. It was extremely pink, and Mythra vaguely wondered why not a white rose? Or a red one? She really thought those were prettier. Pink was an ok color, but she really wondered why use pink. White and red were much more pure and pretty. Although, there were some pinks that were ok.
Mythra shook herself. Why was she thinking about roses? The home was new to her, and there was a box. It was a bit of a journey from her comfy napping place by the window, but Mythra thought it would be worth it. In her expirience, boxes always were, and this one was really pretty. Slowly, surely, she pulled herself from her pillow and opened her eyes, dragging her always tired self down to the floor. It surely was a wonderful place, this floor. Not as nice as her pillow, but it kept her from falling down into the center of the earth. Plodding along on her stubby short legs, Mythra wondered slowly over to where she found the box on her owner's closet. On her way, she passed a rose, a fake one that her owner used for plays. Mythra didn't understand plays, but she really liked stories. Perhaps they were a kind of a story? She didn't know, but they were hard to understand.
Soon, or what she counted as soon, she was at the place with the box. It was patterned with a rose. Roses again. What significance did they have for humans? Especially tonight, she swore there were many roses. Of course, she would have to figure out how to open it. Mythra thought it looked like a shoe box, but it didn't seem heavy enough for it because it didn't have shoes. But the lid seemed similar. She nosed it up, pushing the lid up and over. Slowly, steadily, the box opened. Mythra was extremely excited to find something cool.
But there was nothing. Nothing at all. Just an empty box. She sighed. All that work for an empty box. Perhaps she could find some use for it in the morning? She could find shinies and put them in. She could collect roses, which seemed important for the box. But before she could make a decision, she fell fast asleep, tired from being up late, like she was always sleeping.
