The profound smell of hay and horse hair was embedded in the seats of my Ford pickup truck, along with the very prominent black and brown hairs belonging to my trusty German Shepherd Valak. My older brother had taken the liberty of naming him before giving him to me for my nineteenth birthday, but had failed to inform me until three years later that he had named him after a demon. Go figure. I had chosen to keep Valak at the stable since he had a tendency to be overly curious when it came to new horses and liked to push their boundaries. I put the truck in park in the spacious parking lot belong to the Hyrulian Gypsy Stable, the long silver trailer attached to the back of the dark blue truck. I hopped out just as a short woman came around the corner of the barn, assuming she had heard the crunching of gravel as I pulled in. As I approached her I offered her a warm smile in greeting extending my own hand to shake the one she held out to me. "Good morning Ruth" I greeted the short woman who's graying hair was pulled back in a braid. "Morning Ronnie. Everyone's been excited for you to come. As much as we love Diego, he can be quite the disturbance when he puts his mind to it" Ruth chuckled as she led me around towards the barn. I had come the week before to look at a yearling they called Who Dun' It and was surprised to meet the lively young colt who was quite large in height. Diego was his name, and he was a stunning young colt, that was for sure.

I followed Ruth into the barn and down the aisle, offering nose pats to the other yearlings who stuck their heads out of their stalls. They would be getting picked up soon by other people who had bought them, was what Ruth told me. It hadn't taken long to reach the stall that held the rambunctious young dunskin colt who's beautiful coat was decorated delicately with an extended blanket appaloosa marking. I moved towards the stall, Diego's head hanging out over the door as he thrust his sooty muzzle out in my direction. A smile rose to my face as my hand reached out and stroked his velvety muzzle, feeling the tickle of the whiskers dance across the palm of my hand. "Hey handsome" I smiled, letting my hand slide up the equine's forehead. Even though we had only met once, we had instantly clicked and I knew that no other Gypsy here would be as perfect for me as Diego was.

` taking him home `

After meeting Diego up close and personal for the first time, my excitement could barely be contained and even Ruth and some of the stablehands at the Hyrulian Gypsy Stable casted darting glances that held amusement in their eyes, light smiles tugging at the corners of their lips as they held but smiles. I followed Ruth through the barn towards her office and shut the door behind me. The office smelled profoundly of horsehair and hay, and a grey and white barn cat lay sprawled out on the chair before Ruth's desk. Watching as the lady bent down and hauled the cat into her arms then taking a seat in the chair, I leaned up against the windowsill as she placed the cat on her lap and rifled through some papers. "I can tell how excited you are to take that little devil home so I'll make this paperwork as quick as possible" Ruth informed me, handing me the papers that I had to sign for his ownership. Once the paperwork had been completed and he was officially mine, I shook Ruth's hand before she opened the door and ushered me out. The next few minutes seemed to fly by as I prepared the trailer while one of the stablehands got a halter on Diego and led him out of the barn to the waiting trailer.

Ruth had told me earlier how Diego wasn't too fond of trailers, more so being loaded and unloaded, and that he had set his mind to making it difficult for anyone to load or unload him. As the sandy-haired boy led the massive stallion towards the ramp, the dun colt's head was instantly tossed into the air, snorts erupting from his flared nostrils as he tugged on the lead. "You're first sneak peak at what an angel he is" Ruth chuckled as she thrust her head in Diego's direction. After minutes of the stablehand fighting with Diego, I grew impatient of the game of tug-o'-war and moved towards the opened window of my truck and grabbed the bag of oats I had tucked into the console. I opened the side door of the trailer and pulled myself up. I slowly opened the ziplock bag and let my fingers brush the oats as I moved towards the opened end of the trailer. Grabbing a small amount of the oats in my hand I held them out to Diego who's ears instantly sot forward, nostrils flaring as he caught the scent of the grain. "So you like oats huh?" I pondered as the stablehand handed me the lead. I held it loosely in my hand and with the other, held the oats in my flat palm as I goaded him into the trailer. Once the large horse was fully in, the stablehand closed the trailer door and I tied the lead up, letting Diego clean my palm of any oats. "Have a nice ride handsome. We'll be home in no time" I kissed his forehead before exiting the trailer and closing the side door behind me.

The drive home was nice, peaceful even. No noises of impatience was heard coming from the trailer so I thought that was a good sign. When I pulled the truck and trailer into the parking lot of Timberland Acres, I turned the truck off and hopped out, being sure to take the bag of oats with me. Tucking the bag into the back pocket of my jeans, I began opening the trailer door and setting down the ramp. I entered the trailer, letting my hand run gently along the length of Diego's back as I move from behind him to his head and untied his lead. With enough space inside the trailer, I was able to turn him around so I could lead him down the ramp and out of the trailer for good. I was prepared for another bout of tug-o'-war again but he surprised me when he didn't even toss his head going down the ramp. "You really are somethin' else Diego" I chuckled, giving his thick, muscled neck a firm pat. "Welcome home baby boy" I smiled as I cast my gaze from him to the large stable before us.

`settling in `

With the sun cresting over the horizon, the sound of boots crunching on dirt filled the quiet morning air as I made the journey from the farmhouse to the stable. The whole setting was calming and familiar that it warmed my heart and set me at ease each and every time I wake up in the morning. Sliding open the large door of the barn I slipped inside, pushing it all the way open to let the morning sun blossom into the musty barn. The heels of my barn boots clacked against the cobblestone as I strode down the aisle towards the stall holding Timberland Acres newest recruit. "How's my handsome boy doing?" I greeted Diego, a bright smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. I stroked the yearlings broad forehead before reaching for his halter that hung on a hook just to the right of his stall door. Diego's blue eyes eyed the halter curiously before shifting to me, as if silently asking me what I was doing. "Just figured you could use a friend to help you get settled in" I shrugged as I fixed the halter onto his head and clipped the lead onto the underside.

The clip-clop of his shoed hooves echoed throughout the barn as I led the tall yearling down the aisle towards the barn door. I hoped that with a friend, Diego would find it easier to adjust to his new home. Stepping out into the fresh morning air was refreshing and I inhaled deeply before exhaling through my mouth. I stole a glance sideways towards Diego and stifled a chuckle at the colt who's ears were perked up, eyes attentive and curious, nostrils flared as a series of excited snorts escaped. Patting his neck, I continued to lead him across the yard towards the round pen where another Gypsy stood waiting. The mare that I had taken out earlier, Siren, was a rather independent horse, quite the opposite of Diego from what I hear. We approached the fence and I brought the buckskin appaloosa to a halt, letting him stretch his neck forward to catch Siren's scent. "Diego, meet Siren. She'll be you're...welcoming committee of sorts, and possibly even a new friend" I explained gently to the stocky colt, playing with his short mane.

I moved to open the gate just as Siren edged her way closer to Diego, stretching her neck forward as he had just done and lipped at his forelock playfully. I raised an eyebrow, surprised that she had taken so well to Diego and shook my head in amused astonishment. "Maybe you'll both be good for each other" I mused as I swung the gate open and led Diego into the round pen. I closed the gate behind him and when I turned I was met two velvety muzzles nudged at my body, or more specifically my sweater pocket. "Ooh, you smelt these did ya?" I laughed, burying my hand in the big pocket, bringing out two of the four oatmeal cookies I had retrieved from the kitchen before leaving this morning. Holding one in my flat palm, I extended a hand to Siren who happily lipped at the cookie before crushing it between her teeth and swallowing. I brushed the crumbs off my hand before putting the other one in it and holding out to Diego. Before I could even blink the stallion thrust his muzzle into my palm, greedily devouring the cookie on the spot. "Someone has quite the appetite" I shook my head, stroking his ears. "Alright, since you two seem to be getting along okay in here, let's move you two out to the paddock" I let go of Diego's lead, moving towards the fence of the paddock to grab Siren's lead, returned to the pair and clipped the rope lead to her halter as well. Leading the two out of the round pen, they both flanked me, Siren on my left and Diego on my right. Even though he was only a yearling he was almost half the size of Siren who was quite tall for a mare, standing at 18 hands. I look puny being sandwiched in between two large horses.

Coming up to the gate to one of the paddocks, I open it and led them both in, running my hands up the leads to the clips on both halters before taking them off. As soon as I did, both horse jumped forward before cantering off into the paddock. I closed the gate and leant on the cold metal, a warm smile playing at my mouth. It looked like Diego wouldn't have a hard time fitting in here after all.
