How the song is significant:

Augustus wants to be a star mapping, to be in charge of mapping the stars in the sky onto papers for future generations to see. He loves to be alone by the rocky shore with his telescope, seeing how many constellations he can find. The song relates to Augustus' future job, not only through the title "Midnight Moon", but with lyrics.

"We're all animals out in the dark
Got a feeling that we're all believing in"

This refers to how Augustus believes that humans are minuscule in the great scheme of things, especially when referring to the galaxy that's largely unexplored. Knowing how small Earth is in comparison to the rest of space is made him want to study what he could. He found dark matter and much of that to be unexciting, but constellations excited him. He knows stories behind them are false, but still loves to hear them.

How the gif is significant:

The above gif shows Augustus' favorite place to do his job. A rocky shore on the west coast is where he's always done his best work and finds himself to be the most at ease there. He loves the smell of the salty ocean and the crash of the waves against rock. Those sounds keep him focused and make searching for stars much more bearable, especially when it seems that nothing is visible.
Stars and the ocean are Augustus' favorite things ever. It may seem odd, but the stars are like guidance to him. He feels at peace with them and that's why he's chosen his job to be a star mapper. He sells his maps for decent prices, and therefore gets a job that leaves him content and with a steady source of income. In the end, Augustus knows that this is temporary, but his love for stars continues.
