Maritimus is the "mind" of the siblings, valuing critical thinking and cold, hard facts over feelings, in contrast to their sister. As such, it exasperates them when Amity chooses to take the emotional over what they deem "logical". This difference in personalities is what first caused the two to separate; first in school, they would take different classes to suit their interests: sciences and environmental education for Mar, arts and communication skills for Am. When it came time for each to choose a university, they by no small miracle ended up at the same one; however, for their final year, each is required to partake in a year-long internship and research project at a program of their choice. While Amity chose to fly to Hawaii, Mar went to work in Nunavut. Their projects are ongoing and though far apart, they stay in touch. Every Sunday morning at 2pm in Iqaluit, where they work, Mar phones Am for a debrief of their weeks. Because Mar is blind, they don't mind not having a more personal connection; Amity, however, insists that they video call at least once a month. Thus, Amity calls every Wednesday at 8am from Hawaii. Because of the time difference, these are actually the same time for each. Mar only participates in the video calls to humour their sister, recognizing but not sympathizing with her emotional personality. They usually spend the entire voice call working on their research project, their voice always showing little enthusiasm. The time together, even if it's through a phone call, fits perfectly into their carefully planned routine, and even if they don't show it, they care immensely about Amity.
Holidays are a different matter altogether: every year around holidays including Christmas, Easter, Valentine's day, their shared birthday, and even St Patrick's day, Maritimus takes it upon themselves to plan and put together a gift package. Even on the most mundane of holidays, they collect and mail away a package including books, souvenirs, postcards, a letter, and a stuffed animal. They put more enthusiasm into this than the phone calls, but it is in these packages that it shows through how much they love Amity.

Upon first meeting them, Maritimus invariably appears cold, inflexible, and unfeeling; without an "in"— that is, a talent or trait that they find immediately worthwhile, or one that they come to appreciate— they are likely to continue to live up to that. However, given enough time, they may begin to show the traits they guard from strangers.
Mar's life is strictly regimented, and they thrive off of routine. Their day starts the same way every morning, and they rarely waver from what they're accustomed to. Even if they don't want to finish their morning workouts or finish their reports, they do it because of the high standards they have set for themselves. Routine is imperative to them, and for this reason the only change they make is changing when their day ends— they always stay out until the sun goes down; not because the light helps them any, but because it's warmer; working on research. This often, especially during summer months, results in their coworkers trying to persuade them to go to bed. Stubborn as they are, they try to stay up, but often they just end up falling asleep on their work. Mar tends to finish work very well and very punctually, due entirely to their hardworking nature and disciplining habits.
Emotionally, Mar appears stoic and distant, and tries not to get too involved. Even in their research project, working with polar bears, they never let themselves get attached. Keeping themselves at an emotional distance keeps them, in their mind, from hurting anyone; because feelings are something people are "supposed to" show, they feel that their apparent coldness and avoidance of emotional openness hurt people. Still, Mar is uncomfortable sharing even their most superficial thoughts, let alone innermost. This is why they chose their research project; working with other "people of science", as they like to say, keeps them from hurting other people. Their analytical and calculating nature often does more harm than good in awkward situations; while they articulate their thoughts well, they don't deal well with emotion, so people tend to misinterpret their conciseness as coldness.
Not only is Mar crisp and clean in their speech, but also in appearance. Their cleanly ironed shirts and neatly organized workspaces are representative of their no-nonsense attitude. These details show even before they speak that they have no patience for disorganization or messes of any kind. Even in conversation, their patience wears thin after only a single silly question, if they believe it should have been obvious "from the facts".

quad size: text
anthro height: 5'2"
clothing style: formal, always crisply pressed; when working, they wear a bright red snowsuit
any permanent accessories: a touch-activated pendant (black and gold, sleek). The other one is owned by their sister.
voice: medium deep, emotionless/flat
description: Small in stature, Maritimus comes off as larger than they really are. Always cocking their head in proud defiance of god knows what, they take on an intimidating stance in a subconscious effort to appear larger. Their conflicting clothing choices can throw people off; a bright red snowsuit over business casual attire is, to say the least, offputting for some.
