driving accident |
the pair's driving accident was one that would never be forgotten. it started off as any normal day, the sun was out and shining beautifully against the tolter's backs, there wasn't a worry in the world as far as they were concerned. the older man who ran the stables came out to greet the horses, his hand stroking their noses as he harnessed the two, "We're going on a little ride to town." the old man said gently, leading them to the carriage they had come to know. he drove them down a weathered dirt path, his whistling the only sound cutting through the silence of the forest. "good, good." he said encouragingly, letting the pair know they were doing just fine.
it had taken two hours but they finally reached the town, the man recalling memories of a girl he'd met here. they'd met by riding this exact carriage, he and the girl shared their first kiss in it's leather seats. he shook the thought and pulled over to allow a young couple to ride. they wore grins as they sat in the back and leaned together. the old man smiled and made a round through the town before letting them off. after hours of circling the town and carrying couples who rode to kiss and enjoy the sights, he led the tolters back home. the sun was setting and crimson took place of the lavender hue that rose in the sky before.
he took the shortcut that wound through the woods. it hadn't seemed like a bad plan at the time, but not long into the ride, the carriage had gotten a wheel lodged in new and quickly forming mud. the man jumped out and frantically pulled at the side of the carriage, rain now falling upon his shoulders. the two tolters began to panic, they wildly kicked at the sinking ground, hoping to help. the rain fell faster by the moment, and so did the carriage. the old man called for help, praying someone would hear his pleas, but he couldn't waste time waiting for a miracle. he watched a stream of muddy water rush past his feet, it was a flash flood. he knew he had very little time and there was only one choice, he unbuckled halters and freed the tolters. the water rose to his waist, he kicked off the carriage to escape but was immediately jerked back, his ankle caught in the wheel. he looked for something to unwedge his foot but everything had washed away. he thrashed, his hand grazing a piece of leather. he looked up to see he'd grabbed acanthe's halter. he held on tight as acanthe pulled him out from beneath the carriage. the man lay across his back on the ride to the stables where the hands called for aid.
acanthe had feared rivers ever since the accident, the old man's ankle never healed quite the same. and they were never able to recover the carriage they'd lost.

pairing |
leva was the first to join the stables, a soft hearted mare who seemed lost and curious all at once. the stables hadn't known what to do with the little filly, she hadn't paired well with any other mares as she was always nipped at, and she seemed to rile up stallions. the day that acanthe arrived they immediately hit it off, he had been best friends with her from the minute they saw each other. once they were old enough to be paired for carriages it was clear they were the only options as partners for one another. acanthe had seemed to only work with leva, if he was paired with a stallion he'd push him and attack, but if he was put with a mare he was far too large and would unbalance the carriage, leva appeared to be the only mare capable of matching acanthe's size.
when they realized just how well acanthe and leva got along, they began training, their coloration complimenting both one another and the carriage. months of training led the two to be the stable's pride and joy, they would do carriage rides for events such as fourth of july parades, weddings, and everyday rides for tourists. in the winter their coats blended beautifully with the falling snow and people commented on how lovely it was to see nearly white horses out in such an amazing landscape. they raked in the money and seemed to be a wonderful match. the carriage rides got more popular, everyone hearing about the sights people would see on the forest rides. the stable hands decided to try mixing colors, giving acanthe a black mare and leva a black stallion to work with.
the morning after the new pairings, they brought the two carriages on separate trails, but leva seemed to do nothing but stop and have to be dragged by the stallion, while acanthe would buck and let out loud nickers. the two carriage drivers turned back around and arrived at the stables around the same time, sharing their stories. it became evident that leva and acanthe were a pair that couldn't be separated. their owners decided that leva and acanthe were to work together only, if one couldn't go on a ride then neither would go. a strong driving couple that looked beautiful together shouldn't be separated, and so began a relationship between the mare and the stallion.

relationship |
acanthe and leva had known each other since they were foals, they'd both been orphaned and sent to a stables to be raised around other tolters. naturally, being in neighboring stalls, the two became rather close. each night they'd lay against the wall between them and whinny to communicate. as the pair became older their bond got stronger, the stable hands noticed and attempted to separate them in order to avoid an unexpected pregnancy but this only caused the two to break out of their stalls to see each other. they'd realized that they could do nothing to keep leva and acanthi apart so rather than worry, they just allowed the two to be around one another and hoped nothing would happen. by the time the two were old enough to be reigned, they were being trained in carriage pulling. the two quickly became best friends, everyone claimed they were a beautiful pair.
they often ran through the meadow, pushing at each other and bucking around, they seemed to work well together and hadn't had any fights, perhaps a moment where acanthe would be clumsy and run into leva's shoulder she would give him a nip, but only then was there anything other than love. they'd push each other around like playmates but nuzzle and groom each other as mates, the couple confused everyone but time would show what they were.
as months passed the pair grew inseparable, it seemed as though a once beautiful friendship had formed into something more, something better. they were closer, wouldn't even go to the pasture without the other. the stables hadn't seemed a pair of tolters so infatuated with each other before. they made a larger stall at the stables for the two of them to be closer rather than making so much noise at night trying to communicate between stalls. once the two were sharing a stall it was clear their relationship had grown to be more than just friends, they groomed each other and slept side by side each night. despite the fact that they'd become lifelong mates, they still had gentle quarrels, leva being food driven would often bully acanthe as he was a slight pushover, regardless, it was always apparent that leva and acanthe were a match made in heaven, and a pair since birth.

favorite experience |
their first job as a pair might arguably be their favorite experience.
on a warm spring day an older gentleman had come into the stables requesting a beautiful carriage with their finest horses to be driven at his daughter's wedding. the stable owner proudly smiled and led the man to his two prized horses, acanthe and leva. he gestured his hand to the young pair, the old man's eyes lighting up as he saw them, "these are the ones!" the old man exclaimed, waving his hat through the air as he giddily ran over to the two, wrapping his arms around each of their necks in an embrace.
the horses were led out to a glorious white and gold carriage, soft white roses and small lights haloed the bell-like top. it looked like something out of a fantasy. they knew this would be a night to remember. the stable hands loaded the horses into a large trailer, the carriage pulled by a rusty blue truck as they set out on the long dirt road.
the convoy finally reached their destination, a beautiful emerald green pasture, speckled with patches of lush clovers and knew it was time. the two were unloaded and let out to graze as the party began unloading flowers and benches into the setting. a flowing willow sat as the center of attention, a white arch place below the drooping branches. after two hours of prepping, the bride and groom arrived along with their families and exchanged vows under the arch. the group shed along happy tears and gave lots of smiles as the newly wed couple ran to the carriage now led by the two proud tolters. the groom swooped his new wife up in his arms and jumped into the carriage, waving to their families as the coach set on the route to their “mystical ride” that he'd planned which would allow a romantic view of the gorgeous countryside.
the two tolters happily started at a trot, pulling the newlyweds under the flower arches leading into the large expanse of luscious trees named the spring forest, the name deriving from the hundreds of different flowers that grew there year round. the speckled horses trotted on quiet hooves, following the path set between the tall trees, they soaked up all the new smells, sights and sounds, whinnying in wonder. they had cantered through a few small streams that cut through the path, an activity which leva always enjoyed, while acanthe preferred the joy of weaving through the overgrowing plants that would stick out on the trail. he'd always surprised leva by accidentally giving her a bump as he avoided obstacles on the path. the trail faded and at last they'd reached the barn that had been turned into the event area. the couple jumped off the carriage and said their goodbyes to the tolters, laughing and smiling as they walked off together. the pair was proud of the teamwork and extraordinary experience they gave the newly weds.
