Years. It took years for me to get this far. And I won't let anyone take it away from me.
I was just a pup when I saw "Plumerians Police Force" on the telivision. It was my main inspiration. Pop and Momma told me not to dream too big. Everyone told me off. But I told them off as well. I didn't care. I never did. My mind and heart was set. My dream was seen. And my goal was made.
What goal, you ask?
Hmm. Simple. I want to be
in the Plumerian Police
Force. The real one. Not
the one on TV. A detective,
actually. Momma always said
that I had a knack
for finding things out.
Like where big sis
hid all my candies
and why big bro aced
his math test. He cheated.
But it wasn't easy. Pop
and Momma knew what
I wanted to be. It hurt
them. I know it's
dangerous. I know
it's risky. I know it'll
crush them if something
happens to me. They
wanted me to be an engineer.
I mean,I won't hate it.
I just.... I don't wanna let
them down... But I don't
wanna let myself down.
Grrr! It's weird. Just weird,
It took a lot of persuasion
to let them let me go to this
school.
Now I'm only one step away.
One step away from my dream!
Wait, what?
Sir Eric? I thought he
retired. He pulled me
aside. I greeted but he
told me to shut it.
He showed me a folder,
with my name on it.
He placed it in my paws.
I looked at him, confused.
Sir Eric grunted and
snatched the folder.
"Kid.." Sir Eric didn't face me.
"Kid you.... You didn't make
the cut."
Sir Eric looked at me me with a stern look.
I faced him as well but with a
shocked face.
The words pierced me like a knife.
What? What did he mean I didn't
make the cut?!
"Sir, what do you mean?"
I asked him. I couldn't handle it..
No.. I couldn't accept it.
"What do I have to explain, kid?!
You. Didn't. Make. The. Cut. YOU
DIDN'T PASS! YOU FAILED!"
Sor Eric was known for having a
short temper.
Tears filled my eyes. No....
This... Couldn't be. I can't fail!
I worked so hard! I gave my life
to this!
Sir Eric placed a paw on my shoulder.
"Kid... You can't graduate." I didn't
speak."Look at me." I did. "I know
you put a lot into this... I'm sorry.
Luck doesn't want you to pass, I guess."
He looked away then walked away.
I stood still. Tears in my eyes.
Well, that was before! You know
what happened?
I knew I couldn't be like that.
I went back to college. To become
an engineer like what Momma and Pop
wanted. But things went differently.
I tried... Something.
The day I got the news from Sir Eric
Pop called me into the office.
Stern face as usual. He stood
up and I thought he was going to
scold me.
But he patted my back instead.
"Let's go to the kitchen, champ.
I might have something that can
help."
I followed, still keeping quiet.
Pop got an old notebook, a
bowl, eggs, flour and a bunch of
other stuff.
He set it on the counter and
tossed the notebook to me.
It nearly fell.
"That's my grandfather's notebook.
He made a recipe for a family cake.
But he only baked it once." Pop
faced me. I looked at the old
notebook. It nearly broke apart.
"Bake." he commanded. "What?"
I asked. "Bake. It'll make you
feel better." he left the kitchen.
Once he left, I tried. Note: tried. But it wasn't bad.
After 3 failed attempts, it started to look like a cake.
I liked it. Then next thing I know. I was
studying to be a chef. Weird, right?
Momma and Pop told me not to dream
too big.
They were right. It hurt. A lot. But it helped.
I've never been happier.
Food and detective work? No relation
right? Life has a weird way of making
things work.
Maybe luck didn't want me to be a
detective. Maybe it wanted me to be a chef.
And-
Oh, dear! Gotta get to graduation! I'll
see you! Maybe in my new restaurant! Bye bye!
prologue
cupid took one more minute, looking in the mirror. the jeweled crown sparkled on his head. he pinched his nose. it was hideous. after taking the crown off and placing it on the velvety sheets of his bed, cupid slipped on his wooly black mask. his face was impossible to see now. only his smug, cream eyes peeked out. with a final smirk in the mirror, he grabbed my blue pack from his bed. cupid tied a hooked rope around his waist, knowing it would come in handy, then headed out towards the window.
" well, here goes nothing.. " the former prince muttered, hooking the grapple to the sill and jumping out the castle window.
celestia nodded to jupiter and handed me the sealed note. red wax closed it from the outside world. everyone.. everyone but altair. the curious story I had heard. i couldn't comprehend. altair had apparently been taken from his parents at birth, never knowing his true family, always believing the lies the shadow king told him.
how would I get the message to altair without being caught?
no. I hadn't retired as a prince to give up on one little message. I got up, thanking the family silently, and walking out the door. my winged bracelets fluttered, but only in spite of the cold morning breeze.i fastened the backpack hanging limply on my shoulders, and tightened my boot laces. I walked up the inclines, hills, bumps, traveling only by feet. I was a true pedestrian, wouldn't have it any other way. it was tough, no lie. my feet ached when I was about halfway there. rocky roads hampered my progress, but I trudged on. my ears fell against my head as a few stray moose.. mooses? meese? I don't know. their quick feet and energy made me pink with envy. I was so tired. I sighed and curled up in the soft grass and closed my eyes..
when I woke up and took off my mask, my hair was all ruffed. I didn't care. I placed the mask back on , and started walking again. I had more energy, making it so much easier to walk up the mountain. rounding the corner, I saw horses parked in barns and sheep rustling in fenced places. I trudged on, taking a small sip of the bitter cranberry drink, slipping the bottle back into the pack as I finished the last drops. a brown haired girl turned around, surprised when I bumped into her. surprise flaired in her eyes when she realized who I was. I put a finger to my mouth and ran off. when I was out of her sight, I flipped my palm, revealing the woman's wallet. I felt bad, but I needed it more than she did. in the process of walking away, I tripped over another woman's bag, and she grunted in frusteration. " watch where you're going dude. " phew, this one didn't know who I was. she flipped her blonde hair and picked up all her fallen groceries. almost all of them. I had one of her oranges tucked in my pack.
the large palace where altair had been dwelling, came into view when I turned the block. four mercenaries stood rigid at the castle door, weapons glimmering.
" how to get in.. "
whispering to myself, I scoured the castle for a weak spot in the defense.
" aha! "
using bushes as a cover, I crept behind the guards, close to the walls. slipping silently through, stepping lightly on my hiking boots. i made no such sound. once I was on carpet, I started sprinting. all the years I had been climbing and climbing had made me extremely agile and quick on my feet. using this advantage, I stayed below the radar of the guards and made my way up the stairs to altair's room. my palms were sweating as I slipped the note under the door. I could hear the rustling of paper and the peeling of the seal. I heaved a sigh of relief, retracing my steps as I made my way back to the front door. I looked behind me, surprised I was unseen and unheard. a guard had his back turned, facing away from me. he was right in front of me. as soon as I turned back around, I was conked on the head with a large.. a large weapon of some sort. my vision faded, all the noise around me quieting as my eyes shut.
" I know him. wait until the shadow king gets a load of him. "
the murmur of mercenaries made me keep my eyes closed under my black mask. I use it to protect my face against the cold blistering wind.
" take the mask over, why don't ya? "
" it's more of a surprise when we take them to the king. "
" you always do this. just let me see. "
" fine. put it back when your done though. "
I suppressed a smirk. if they thought they were going to see my face they had another thing coming.
the guards came towards me, one on the right and one on the left. they untied my cuffs, hands close to their weapons. when they took off the mask, a familiar face greeted them.
" cupid? "
" the prince? "
I grinned, eyes shimmering. I darted below their legs, scraping my arm on the stone floor. with a smug salute, I grabbed the rope and launched myself out the window.
