Story || 500/500 Words

"Mamma!" Ethera cried as she reached a soot darkened paw desperately out, hoping to touch the soft fur that she had come to know. The jaws on her scruff yanked her away before she could come in contact with the silent ball of fur.
Tears cut paths through her fur, anguished digging into her heart like thorns. Ethera's father had woken her in the morning, it had seemed at first. The first like of the sunrise seemed to be sneaking through the thick branches of the trees that surrounded her home. But soon the young Kalon had realized something was wrong. There was panic in her father's voice and the air smelled like burning wood. That wasn't the sun.
Even though it had been but a few moments since she had been woken to the forest fire, it had felt like centuries. Her father was carrying her, his size to an advantage. Even though she was a young adult, no longer a kit, he could easily carry her.
"We'll come back for her later!" Ethera's father grunted, fear scent pulsing off him in waves. Something stirred within her and she immediately knew that they weren't going back. Her mother was dead.
The duo fell silent. There was nothing to say. Their home was being ravaged around them by the furious flames. They had both lost one of the most important Kalon's in their life.
They traveled for minutes, then ten, then fifteen. The smoke in the air thickened, both of them coughing regularly. Ethera could hear that her father's breathing was labored. The flames were closing in around them when her father collapsed. His legs were laced with burns and his eyes were half closed. The look he gave her told her everything she needed to know.
Ethera had to continue the journey alone.
She nuzzled her father's cheek and made a soft noise of distress as he weakly nudged her away. He knew she was smaller, faster. He had done everything for her that he could. The forest edge wasn't more than three miles away, but those were three miles that he'd never walk again.
Ethera, a Kalon just out of kit-hood, was alone for the first time in her life. Fear fueled her, energy and adrenaline coursing through her veins. The smoke darkened everything around her and soot fell like snow. She felt her hopes drop when the forest edge never came.
Ethera was lost.
She had taken a wrong turn. But she had no other choice but to keep going, ashes and embers burning her paws at every step. Darkness was closing in on her eyes and every breath was labored. She blacked out.
What happened next, she didn't know. When Ethera opened her eyes, the bright light nearly blinded her. She was in a meadow, not unlike the ones that surround the forest that she once lived in. Next to her was food and water, as well as the scent of an unknown Kalon.

Extra || 187/200 Words

Ethera is a nervous Kalon. She has social anxiety which often has a negative effect on her ability to make friends. It is not uncommon for her, however, to warm up to a specific few Kalons and hang around them. Inside of her shell, Ethera is a bright and warm Kalon with a lot to share about what she's learned in her travels. One way to get her to warm up to you is to talk to her about plants. Immediate friendship will occur. Friendships with Ethera are often short lived, as she has a tendency to only stick in one place for a certain amount of time and by the time she'd return, if ever, she would have returned to her shell around those Kalons. Ethera has a soft spot for Kalon kits and loves playing tag with them during the warm months. She has a little crush on the Kalon that saved her life, but due to not knowing their identity, she cannot act on it. Overall, she is difficult to get to know but once you know her, Ethera will leave a lasting impression.
