#79 - "bit by bit, gonna get my bricks out in the sticks."

short story xxxxxxxxxxxxx theme song bit by bit - mother mother
“say 'hi' first. if theres anything ive learned, its that if you want to talk to someone, talk to them. go out on a limb. do not wait for them to talk to you first because, odds are, theyre waiting for the same thing.”

a young man sits on the corner of muskogee and manyard, half empty pop can hanging from his lithe fingers. he looks into space, taking a long drag from his cigarette, lips cracked and dry. he thinks to himself, ignoring passerby who glance at him questioningly. his mouth feels thick and heavy, so he spits on the ground near an unsuspecting shoe. hearing the surprised grunt, he tips his head apologetically.

"do you want to die this way?" his friend charles asks, swinging up on the trash can next to him. "i dunno. wouldnt mind- kinda cozy." willoughby murmurs, shrugging his thin shoulders. "yep, cold november rain every day. love it." he wheezed a laugh, twirling the smoke between his fingers. "you got a show tonight?" charles prodded, leaning in close. "hell yeah, at the umbrella stand." he patted the tattered guitar case strapped secure to his back.

hes heard all the questions, felt all the hands trying to help. when he got on stage everyone always whispered about his eyes, how he couldnt see but you could count the stars in them. the things being reflected into those gorgeous, baby blue irises. hed get into fights when he was little, the older kids would tease him and take his pencils, snickering when he reached around for them. instead of four eyes they called him no eyes, and enjoyed tripping him when he ran.

"momma, why does everyone hate me?" he asked one day, picking at the bandaids on his skinned knees. "they just dont see how special you really are, theyre jealous." she said, folding laundry and knocking her cigarette on the edge of the ash tray. he kicked his legs against the side of the washing machine. "momma, are you smoking again?" willoughby wrinkled his nose and turned away, while his mother blew a cloud into the air. she never replied, instead focusing on the little white t-shirt clutched in her hand.

he remembered most of his childhood sitting on the hard concrete steps leading to his apartment. hed wait for his mother to come home every night from her job. sometimes she didnt return until late morning, and hed sleep on the stairs until he felt her cold hands shake him awake. sighing heavily, the man drummed his fingers against the tin of the garbage can. "hey, whats it like- being blind?" charles said quietly, twirling his long crimson locks between his fingers.

"lonely." he blew a cloud of smoke into the chilling autumn air.

Short Story [Under 500]:
I was in a forest, wilking. I felt the rain and the leaves, and all trees around me. But there was another thing, that' I was trying to escape. I felt like being followed. " Oh well, I'm gonna be lost today!", I've said to the thing who was following me. I heard small foots-tap like sounds behind me. " I don't hear you at all, I don't! Oh, let me tell you that my ears still listen! Those bad jokes don't work with me at all!" And on those words, I've jumped on this little tiny thing wich was following me. "Oh well, a branch sticked in my tail. That was making this weirds sounds."

⤜ I feel the color I can't see ⤛

████████████████████████████████████████████
short story; [498/500 words]

The breeze flew gracefully through my hair as we drove to our destination. As I rode beside my friend in
silence, I took in what I could of the world around me. It doesn’t bother me that I am blind. I’ve accepted
that fact, and learned to live without sight. Who needs eyes when you can experience the world around
you, rather than just see it? Although the world was dark to me, the air was alive with a wildness that
was unexplainable.

My friend Jethro announced the arrival to our destination, and I felt the car slow down and grumble to
a stop. Jet stepped out of the car and made his way over to the passenger’s side, opening the door for
me. I stepped out of the car and stretched. The journey had been a long one, but Jethro had assured
me that wherever we were travelling was worth the long ride. After a deep yawn and a chuckle from
my friend, Jet shuffled over to me, took my hand, and with a swift motion, placed it on on his shoulder.
He was my leader, and I was at the mercy of the path he chose to take me.

“We’re heading up on a bridge over a river. I’ll make sure you face the sunset.” Jet said in his deep,
grumbly voice. His soothing tone had always made me feel at peace. I nodded. My feet felt the ground
below me change as we walked off of the gravel path and onto the wooden bridge. A chilling warmth
washed over me, and I turned to it’s source without Jet’s guidance. He chuckled and moved my hand
from his shoulder to the railing of the bridge. There we stood for a few minutes, and only the roar of
the river below and the happily chattering birds disturbed the silence.

The beauty of it all took my breath away…

I could smell the trees as the evening breeze lazily drifted through their branches. I could taste the
crisp air as it washed over us, the day fading slowly into night. I could feel the shadow’s cool embrace
as the sun crept below whatever horizon lay ahead of us. I could hear the wind as it whispered goodnight
to the creatures of the land. But, alas, I could not see the colors of the sky as the sun hid her face
behind the mountains.

“What color is the sunset?” I asked my friend in a soft whisper, not wanting to disturb the serenity of
the moment.

“Red and Pink.” Jet responded. “Red is the fiery will to live; the life-blood that flows through your veins.
Pink is the warmth on your face in the presence of embarrassment, laughter, love, and awe.” I smiled in
the direction of my friend’s hushed voice. Jethro’s description of the colors was perfect.

Although the sight of the beauty he described was lost to me, the essence of it was not out of reach.

Name: Ari
Gender: Male
3 Word Personality: don't touch me ;;;
Short Story [Under 500]:
Ari poked his head out of a wet cardboard box and rolled into the alleyway. He shook himself and padded to the opening of the alley silently, listening for any unusual sounds. Hearing only the birds' songs and the chirps of some crickets, Ari darted out into the open and sniffed the air. Trusting his nose, he felt his way in what seemed like the direction of food. The clock tower struck 7 am. People were starting to bustle about, and Ari melted into the crowd, avoiding eye contact as much as possible. He moved stealthily from stall to stall, snitching whatever he could get his hands on. True, he was a thief. But Ari was only a child and besides, he had to find a way to survive. He was 10 years old. And furthermore, he was blind.
Ari dashed back into his safe haven, otherwise known as a soggy box someone probably threw out. It was pathetic, but Ari made the best out of what he had. He curled up to conserve heat and closed his eyes for a short rest, but shuddered as the memories of that day came rushing back to him. The day he was captured. The day he was treated like an inferior. The day he became blind.
7-year-old Ari playfully tumbled down a hill, skidding to a stop in front of a large moving van. He stared up at a giant of a man looking disdainfully down at him. Ari smiled sheepishly and blinked several times before strong arms gripped him and lifted him off the ground. The man slapped his hand over Ari's mouth to prevent him from shouting. Ari dangled helplessly from the man's hands as he was shoved into a cage.
After a couple hours of cramped darkness, the trunk opened and sunlight filtered in. Ari blearily opened his eyes, shielding them from the light. He skittered to the back of his cage while the man grabbed the metal bars roughly, swinging him out. He was dragged into a laboratory filled with chemicals, other scientists, and a variety of amazing animals-- some successes, and some... well, not so successful critters. Ari let out a pitiful cry as he felt a metal ring clamp around his neck and other cuffs shackle him to a table. One scientist held his eyes open while another squirted multiple chemicals in them, in hopes of improving night vision. Ari whimpered and thrashed against the metal bands securing him, but to no avail. His eyes burned, and his vision was blurring. Then, everything went dark.

Ari opened his eyes and tried to control his breathing. Flashbacks like this were frequently haunting him. He took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly to calm himself. But that calmness was promptly ruptured when a door opened, and a shop owner came to throw out the trash. Ari couldn't handle the fear washing over him as he scampered away into the shadows. He would never trust anyone again.
