Rain pelted down to earth in sheets of water. Ace shivered, water soaking his sleek coat. He squinted through the rain till he could the large stables. Today he was competing in the cross country championships. He was led by the stable hand into the busy but rather welcoming and warm stables. He brought him in a spacious stall and took off his blanket, unclipping each clip. Ace snorted, ridding of musty hay tingling his nostrils. He bent his head left and managed to snatch a mouthful of juicy hay. The groom was grooming him using a sweat scraper in attempt to get the rain off of his neck. Warm at last! Ace was quite comfortable. He nickered at the horse next to him, a champagne coloured gelding. He gently returned a nicker. Soon the groom left him.
Quite a while later, the sun began to go down, and the lights in the barn were switched on. The barn was filled with a warm, musty sensation. Many horses closed their eyes and feel asleep to the sound of rain battering the barn roof. Ace too closed his eyes and fell asleep.
Warm morning light filtered through the barn. Ace's rider, a small man by the name of Evan strolled up the Ace. Ace nickered, sensing Evan's nervousness. "Well, Ace, my boy! Today's the big day!" He patted his velvety muzzle. "We are going to show those other horses and riders what were made out of!" He said. Then, whistling, he scooped Ace's breakfast into a food bucket. "There ya go, boy." Ace dug in, savoring each bite of the crunchy breakfast. Evan immediately got to work, prettying up Consider in Dun. Soon Ace was shining and ready, mane braided and hooves polished. "Well, boy," Said the please Evan, "Your look-in mighty handsome today!"
It was a while later. Evan was atop Ace and they were at the starting line. "This is it boy." He padded his neck gently. Ace's every muscle tingled with excitement. Seconds later, the flag was raised and off they were! Ace lurched forward, setting a steady pace. His hoofs beat rhythmically, and his every stride showed off his ripping muscles. Cheering exploded from the stands. This Is what Ace was made for. He cleared a series of jumps, including a water jump. He only nicked a few. Around Ace and Evan, other riders urged their horses on. The air was filled with the sound of straining horses and a flurry of hooves.
Soon enough, the race was over. Evan thought they placed well, but that was for the judges to say. Evan listened intently. "Fourth place, Evan Sanders on Consider it Dun!" Evan jumped for joy! "Ah ha! We sure showed e'm!" He draped his arms across the sweating Ace. Ace just snorted in delight, adrenaline cursing through him.
