Story:
It was a cold, blustery day when Frosty was born. He was one of the late foals, born after the rest of that year’s crop. His owners had thought that his mother would lose the foal due to the very late and difficult delivery. But, little Frosty was born safe and sound, a little smaller than most foals, but healthy. From the beginning Frosty was more cautious than most foals, taking time to look things over and watch from afar before exploring. As a foal he and his mother were kept apart from the other foals to give Frosty some time to grow and catch up to the older foals. When his owners thought he was big enough they put Frosty and his dam in with the other mares and foals. The other foals were a little suspicious of the small, cautious foal and Frosty endured more than his share of teasing. But, his mother was protective and kept him from any real harm. Then she became sick, and was taken out of the pasture to heal. Frosty’s temporary foster mother was kind, but not as affectionate or protective as his mother. The other foals continued to tease him, and Frosty was too small and timid to make them stop. Every day he wished his mother would heal and come back, but after weeks he realized she never would come back. Frosty was heartbroken and began to mope around, eating very little. It was a sunny day when Frosty was standing under a tree, feeling sad, that a big foal that had often teased him came over and nipped his flank for no reason. Frosty became angry. His anger and sadness threatened to overwhelm him and he bit the other foal back, hard. The foal squealed and ran off. After that he never bothered Frosty again. After the incident, Frosty’s temperament changed. He became grumpy, and he no longer had any fear of biting back if other foals teased him. Even after he left the foal’s field and joined the adult herd, he remained stand-offish and sharp tempered. Because of this he never made friends. No one knew what had happened to him and assumed he was just born grumpy. His foalhood nickname, Frosty, was changed to Frosted. And his show name was announced, Frozen Heart. The other horses said the name fit him perfectly. To this day Frosted is still as grumpy as ever. Now more out of habit than anger or grief. His warmhearted, sweet side, has been lost. While there are times he would like to change and be more a part of his herd, he isn't sure how, or if he is willing to take that step, and the risks of rejection that come with it.
