story: With a heavy heart and tired eyes, Autumn and Vance kissed their child goodnight. Valiance was only a mere few months old; not nearly old enough to understand the situation he was being forced into. The penny colored Viscling stretched his aching paws and lay his head to rest, yet sleep still seemed to elude him. The sky was a dark navy, speckled with flecks of gold. His mother once told him it was the same gold that made its home on his face and inner ear. Vali quite liked the thought of that, and enjoyed knowing that the universe was a part of him. Though his age predicted differently, he was a rather intuitive fellow and could sense the tension in the air before anyone had confronted him about it. Though he knew not what was wrong, Valiance knew the presence of dread all too well, as he had unfortunately been the child born into it.
The young Viscet knew better than to bring anything up. Surely his parents would tell his sometime, right? Autumn and Vance had always been honest with their kids, about the good and the bad. Actually, Vali had never known the family to keep a secret from him quite this long, and the thought made him uneasy. Even his brother, Bo, seemed on edge lately. With a dry mouth, the boy once again shut his eyes and attempted to chase his dreams to no avail.
After a little less than an hour, Valiance had given up on all possibilities of sleep.
"Mama?" he called out into the crisp night a air. A dense layer of fog blanketed the area around him, and all he was able to make out was a smoky figure coming toward him. Vali found calmness in he bright orange pelt of his mother, but the redness in her eyes all but cancelled out the feelings of warmth. "I can't sleep. I've tried everything."
Autumn gave a half-hearted smile to her forbidden son. She reminisced to when Bo was this age- how many times he'd called her in the same tone. Luckily, this had taught her what to do quite well, and she nestled up next to her child.
"Have I ever told you a bedtime story?" she asked soothingly. Seeing the shake of Vali's tiny head, she continued. "I guess not, huh? Well this is one that I told your brother when he was your age, and it always helped him go to sleep." Autumn felt guilt in her words. Indeed it had helped Bo sleep, but it was in their own house- not on the damp forest floor. Swallowing those feelings, she began to speak.
"Once upon a time, there was a little Visling named Valiance." At his name, her son's folded ears perked up. "Valiance loved rocks, and he loved collecting them. So one day, he headed out into the forest with a bag so he could get some. There were rocks everywhere in the forest - big ones, small ones, black ones and white ones, smooth rocks and rough rocks, and even some with crystals! Valiance wanted all of the rocks in the forest, but he knew that his bag wasn't nearly big enough for that. So instead, he decided he would only pick up the prettiest ones he could find."
Autumn checked to see if he was still awake. Vali's bright green eyes met hers expectantly, so she went on.
"All of a sudden, Valiance realized he'd never been so far away from home before, and he began to feel scared. Looking around, he saw a bridge, and on the other side of the bridge were the most beautiful rocks he'd ever seen in his life. He didn't feel scared anymore as he stepped on to the bridge... Until the bridge started shaking. Then, a mean old troll jumped out!"
An audible gasp could be heard by the tawny baby.
"The troll stood right in front of Valiance, refusing to let him cross. 'What do you think you're doing?' the troll yelled. 'I-I was just going to collect some of those rocks over there on the other side of the bridge.' Valiance cried. 'Well, those are my rock, and this is my bridge! No one crosses my bridge to collect rocks unless they bring me three green apples!" With that, the troll shooed Valiance off of the bridge. The Viscling then ran home, in search of apples."
Again, Autumn checked to see is Vali had fallen asleep. Much to her surprise, he seemed as wide awake as ever. So, with a deep breath, she kept going.
"'Mama, mama!' Valiance called. His mama poked her head of the room. 'What's wrong?' she asked him. "I was looking for rocks, and I saw these really pretty ones on the other side of the bridge but when I tried to cross it, a mean old troll jumped out and told me I couldn't have any unless I brought him three green apples!' His mama smiled and said, 'Okay, well then we better start looking for some apples!"
"The two searched and searched the room for a green apple. They had found red ones, and yellow ones, and even yucky brown ones, but there was no sign of a green apple. But, just as Valiance was about to leave, they found one on the top of the fridge. He hugged his mama and thanked her before kissing her goodbye and going to see his dad."
"His dad was in the living room, and it didn't take long for Valiance to find him. 'Daddy, daddy!' he called, and repeated his story. Concerned, his dad jumped up and helped him look for a green apple. This time, there were no sign of apples anywhere! But, just as Valiance was going out of the door, his dad found one under the couch. He told his dad thank you before running of to his brother's room."
"Bo, Bo!" Valiance called. Bo lay in his room, and seemed angry when his brother ran in. 'Get out of my room!' Bo said. Before his brother could make him go, Vali once again repeated his story. Bo rolled his eyes, but said he would help Valiance look for a green apple. The two brother checked everywhere- under the bed, on top of his table, next to the TV... Yet it couldn't be found. But just as Valiance turned to leave, Bo found a green apple! 'Where was it?" Valiance asked. 'In my mane!' Bo replied with a laugh. As happy as ever, Valiance ran back outside with his bag and sprinted through the forest until he got to the bridge."
"Stepping on it once more, the troll popped out. 'I thought I told you not to cross my bridge unless you brought me three golden apples!" He yelled. With a smile, Valiance told him that he had his apples, and handed them to the troll. 'Fine," he said, "you can go have as many rocks as you want.' And with that, he jumped back under the bridge so Vali could cross."
"Valiance gathered all of the rocks he could fit into his bag. The walk home was tiresome because of all the rocks he had to carry, but he was so happy he didn't care! When he got home, he gave his mama, his daddy, and his brother all a special rock to keep. The end."
By the time Autumn finished the story, Valiance, was fast asleep. Once again kissing his head, she hoped he couldn't feel her warm tear drop onto his furry head.
The orange Viscet rose and made her way back to Vance. With shivers going up her spine, she dreaded the day she'd have to give her son up. Where they lived, Viscets were only allowed one child to help with efforts to decrease overpopulation. Laying her head down to sleep, she silently wished that everything had a happy ending like children's stories seem to.
