I stare at the dark, unforgiving sky, its mysteries unfolding before my eyes. Bats flutter across the face of the moon, eerie squeaks emanating from the darkness. Alone, quiet in the inky, surreal world of the night. This is where I met my love. My idol. The one I will always remember.

His name was Harbinger, the most wonderful bald eagle I've ever met. His bright, piercing brown eyes that stared into your soul, pulled all of your secrets you kept away. That night, in that wonderful setting, is where I met him.
I hear the soft flutter of wings behind me. I ignore it, staring out at the rolling hills beyond in the dark of night. I look down, the edge of the cliff I am perched at the top of so far from the ground below.
"Hello, miss." I hear a gentle voice say quietly, barely audible. I turn around to see a bald eagle, white head almost glowing in the darkness.
"Oh, hello." I say softly, shyly. He tilts his head, looking into my hard, impenetrable, sorrow filled eyes.
"My name is Harbinger." His perfect, smooth voice glides through the air.
"I... I'm Harpou." I look down, across the land.
"Well, Harpou. I don't think I've seen your species around before." His kind voice urges me to tell him everything.
"I'm a Viscet." I speak simply. I look into his brown eyes. Tell him, tell him...
"Why so quiet and hostile?" He asks the question I've been dreading, not prying, but asking. He looks genuinely interested. So I tell him.
Its a bright, sunny day. My big brother, Drahon (Dray-hone), is frolicking through the lush green grass. I chase after him, a smile lighting up my small, child face. I admire him, more than anyone else. He thinks of me as a job he just wants to quit, but it doesn't affect my love for him. He turns around, his smiling face distorting into an annoyed sneer.
"Leave me alone, fluff ball." He snarls. I look down.
"But Dray..." I say in my squeaky, whiny voice.
"No!" He says louder, trotting backwards through the grass, eyes closed to narrow slits. I look up at him again and gasp in horror. A human vehicle is rushing across a black strip along the ground. Drahon's path will intersect with the vehicle any minute now.
"Look out!" I cry, icy cold fear in my young voice.
"Shut up and go away!" He shouts, anger obvious in his voice.
"Dray!" I scream as he steps onto the black strip. He ignores me, turning around, but its too late. The vehicle slams into his body, sending him flying into the underbrush. I run to him, tears streaming down my face. I look into his eyes, expecting to see hatred, but his eyes are soft for once.
"You tried to save me, kiddo..." He mutters. "And I treated you like dust. I love you, kiddo." He smiles and closes his eyes for the last time, draws a last breath. I can't say anything, my voice is too hoarse from screaming. I can't speak, can't hear, can't see, my eyes clouded by tears. I collapse on the ground, my body racked with sobs.
I flash back to the present, Harbinger's soft eyes boring into me.
"I'm sorry." He whispers. I shake my head.
"No, no. I just separated myself from everything and anything." I say, looking at my paws again. Harbinger smiles and then lifts his graceful wings.
"I have to go now, my parents will wake soon." His spread wings reflect the moonlight onto my sad face, glistening off the fresh tears on my face. I nod and he soars away, over the horizon.
I never did see him again, but I will always remember him. Harbinger, the one who opened me up.
