Short story:
The first thing I remember was of course, my mother. But from about a week old, I remember danger. My mother had me by the scruff, racing through the forest. There was barking, yelling, from a group of creatures chasing close. I could smell her fear and worry. I could smell her sadness...
"See I told you I saw that big cat run over here with something"
I froze, what is that thing I smell... its so strong.
"Velcro... its a baby cat." A sweeter voice answered the first.
I unfroze just long enough to see two giant monsters standing side by side in the face of the shed. One monster, Velcro, was a copper-brown color, the other was grey.
"Baby cat? Sweetie, its okay." The grey monster took a step forward. She had rounded feet that stomped in the dirt of the shed. I pushed myself closer to the opposite wall.
"Hazel you aren't helping." Velcro nudged her flank.
"Well we cant just leave him here, its still the ending of winter and another storm will be here soon... go find one of the cats or maybe Ponder? Something smaller that wont scare him as bad. Horses are obviously a little too much for him. Ill stay and keep him safe." Velcro nodded and I watched him turn around. He had four of those big rounded feet, and I could feel them all stomp the ground in a pattern, even out of site.
I stared wide eyed at the other... horse. She heaved a big sigh and knelled down and plopped her back feet under her belly, laying similar to what I had seen my mom do. That comforted me slightly, seeing something sort of familiar. She looked away as she waited for the return of her partner. Listening to her breathing, it was calming. I closed my eyes and pretending she was my mom, it put a pain through my chest thinking of her. Opening my eyes I looked at her again, this monster wasn't so bad once she was closer to the ground.
I was cold... she wasn't my mom but... maybe she can keep me warm? I slowly crept closer to her, inch by inch, till I was close enough to wiggle my way past the crook of her leg to her chest. I winched when her hot breath pushed down my face to my nose, I sensed no danger. With a couple of seconds I drifted to sleep, exhausted from my episode of events.
"Oh hes very young... and you found him in the corner of the lean to? Right here?"
Quickly opening my in fear, pushing my self against the horse, Hazel.
"Yes, his mother brought him here and left, very fast."
"I have smelled wild dogs near by the last couple of days, I wonder if they found her birthing cove." This animal sounded concerned.
The new creature was alot more my size but still a bit bigger. He too was grey but had amber eyes with odd markings complementing the sockets.
"Baby cat, this is Ponder, a Snorgi. Hes a type of dog, you can trust him too."
I glanced at Ponder, who smiled and nodded.
"He will take you to a safer place, but I will be close by." She nudged me to stand and Ponder touched my nose, with reassurance.
I followed Ponder across the big field, to a stone structure that had so many different, un-familiar smells. He lead me through a door with a small flap, and inside we caught the attention of many different creatures.
"A new member, welcome young one."
"Hello! Welcome!"
"Finally another cat."
"I guess you realize, this is your new home. But before you are granted a new name, or get comfortable you must met our head of the house-hold, Magicly."
I glanced at him and back at all the creatures laying on couches and floors.
"What is all the commotion about? Oh! A kitten! Ponder where did you find him?"
"This is her, she is a magic person, but she gave all of us you have seen a home and a family.
"Oh never mind Ponder! Let me see him!"
I looked worried at Ponder.
"Its okay kid, you understand."
She scooped me up, her emerald eyes met mine. There was so much kindness floating in her pupils, I couldn't help but pur.
"Awhhh, you pur like the babble of a Brook," she laughed. "Brook! Well call you Brook."
With that she snuggled me in the crook of her arm on my back and cuddled me, and even though I missed my mom, I already felt the warmth of their love.
