The harsh light of winter betrayed his eyes, still foggy from sleep. Icy slush lapped at aching paws and fierce wind teased frozen fur. After what felt like an eternity, Tang rose from his make shift den, shivering and a little disoriented. To be truthful, he didn't remember going to sleep at all. The night didn't seem to last long, as his eyes hadn't even begun to crust over, but he was thankful for what rest he received. With a sigh, his eyes began to focus, and the world seemed a little clearer. His location wasn't recognizable by any means, neither by Viscets or humans. Actually, Tang questioned whether this forest was inhabited at all.
A growl of his stomach made up his mind. He hadn't seen any prey in miles, and it was beginning to take a toll on his body. Luckily, he managed to remain hydrated by (hesitantly) drinking the ice on the ground. This wasn't the life he was used to- not by a long shot.
Soon, nostalgia set in. Tang thought of the forest, and deer, and ponds aplenty. He thought of his friends, and of his enemies. He thought of feeling the lush grass beneath his paws and of seeing the night sky struggle to be seen through the canopy. But most of all, he thought of safety.
Snapping back to reality, he was reminded of the task at hand. Beginning to trudge through the snow, Tang adapted to the weather a bit more. He no longer trembled at the icy blasts, but instead furrowed his brows and continued onward, replaying the unconscious story he was told.
It began many, many years ago. Viscets were so new at the time, so scattered. Few banded together, but most preferred to live alone in or pairs. There was one pack though, living on the outskirts of a barely populated town, known as "No Mercy Pack." Their alpha male, a rather small Viscet that went by no name in particular, had inhabited the location. Many Viscets had joined out of pure fear of the unknown, as no one had seen the young ruler's face due to a peculiar gold mask he wore. It was said to have belonged to his great-great-great grandfather. It had been passed down for centuries and had wound up on his muzzle, until the day that his pack banished him. He found solace in a nearby forest that turned out to be a false haven. He fell quite quickly due to the climate and to his uncontrollable hunger. The mask still lays there, underneath the largest oak in the woods, waiting to be found by a Viscet of the same bloodline.
Tang wasn't sure if he believed in the story, but he'd had the same dream so many times that he couldn't help but be curious. Perhaps this was the same dream that led to his father's death... Or maybe it was all just a child's tale. Either way, Tang was going to get to the bottom of an ancient mystery. That, or he'd die trying.
So he pushed, and he pushed. Sleet tore into his skin and slush had managed to freeze to a solid beneath his paw pads. Although it was still early, the sun was nowhere to be seen.
Soon, rustling could be heard over the howling wind. Am I not alone? Tang wondered. Anxiety began to flood over him, but his eyes remained forward. Soon, the noise grew deafening. Whatever it was, it was right behind him. slowly coming to a stop, he peered his head around.
He was met by only a fearsome snarl, showcasing massive teeth.
Frozen both figuratively and literally, Tang simply watched the large creature.
With his mind moving at impossible speeds, he slowly began to piece together exactly what it was that was staring him down. He figured it to be a bear, or at least something very similar to it.
Before he could so much as run, the bear began to rise onto its two rear paws. His shadow swallowed Tang, and engulfed the Viscet in complete darkness. Suddenly, the creature let out an ear-shattering roar. This seemed to trigger Tang's legs to move, and he began sprinting in the direction opposite that of his opponent. He could feel the ground shake from the bears heavy footsteps, and he was really only a few paces ahead of him.
After running for a good five minutes, fatigue seemed to wash over the both of them. The bear slowed to a halt, and Tang followed soon after. At rest, he found that he had passed the tree he had been searching for all this time. Slinking low to the ground, he traced his way backwards. It only took a few moments before he saw it- the tree! And in one of the branches, hanging on just barely, was the mask! Happily, he trotted up to his destination, nearly forgetting the bear.
With quite a bit of resistance, he scrambled up the tree and grabbed the mask between his front teeth and scaled back down, only to be met with an extra pair of eyes.
Before Tang had time to think, the bear slashed its long claws across his nose, and reared back up. Luckily, Tang managed to escape before he fell back down.
Now, he wears the mask as not only a symbol of pride and bravery, but also to hide the scars that the bear left him.
taking a hiatus, unsure of how long. don't really know what to say other than i'm sorry. just got out of a serious, long-term relationship and it ended pretty badly. sorry if i don't respond to your pms or comments, kinda taking a mental health break.

prolog

When he was young his mother had often told him stories of great wars and pack battles, how his father had been the one to chase the humans away from his home and how he had lost his life in the process. As a youngling he had never understood why the humans had wanted this dry, uneventful desert in the first place, had never understood the idea of this hot barren land being sacred to his pack. It wasn't until he had woken up to his mother being taken away in a big human smoker that he realised that it was because his pack was afraid of moving; afraid of leaving and running into more humans on their way. Well now he's leader and this has to change. No more human interference, no more smoky air, no more losing pack members. They just have to leave.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The small lithe viscet sighs and slings his helmet onto the back of his head, not fully on so he can see properly. Yet another thing 'sacred' to his old-fashioned pack, he knows he should leave it behind to signal the start of a new era but he just can't. It had been a gift from his father and his comfort item ever since he was a newly hatched youngling. With a hearty sigh, the viscet moves his nimble feet towards the spot the rest of his pack had gathered, the pack that would now rely on him to get them to a safe new territory. Somewhere safe and quiet and rich in prey and secluded and oh so many other needs. But if his pack was to survive they had to move, now. With another, quieter sigh he would set off away from the place he had spent so many days playing with his packmates, so many nights dreaming of one say going into battle to save the pack he adores so much. All of that would no longer happen here and he finally admits to himself he's just as scared of change as the rest of his pack. But he keeps his head up high, his tail still and his legs steady. He takes the first step towards his packs destiny, whether they survive the journey or not.

Racing through the desert, the sun-baked sand no more than stinging their hardened paw-pads, the desert pack would come to their first water source for miles; finally being able to stop t water their parched mouths before flopping down onto their sides to rest. He knows there would be no point in pushing them any further, they'd only collapse. He could smell it, so tantalizingly, they're close.

He rouses the pack a few hours later after he has woken up from his own nap, walking slower now. He suddenly stops. Humans. He can smell them, close. Before he had time to register what was happening the humans had surrounded them. But these ones seem... different. No hostile stances or the lingering stench of smoker-stench on their clothes. He doesn't take any chances, backing away along with his pack as they advance, making strange but oddly soothing clicking noises; almost as if they're trying to communicate. He copies the noise, clicking back as best as he can, trying to copy their odd speech patterns. They seem just as shocked as him before one throws an odd looking piece of meat at them. He growls for his pack to stay back before taking a tentative nibble; deciding it's okay to eat. He lets the youngsters devour it, as is the food chain in his pack. youngsters, nursing mothers, elders, strong pack members and then him.

With cautious steps he follows the seemingly friendly humans into their blocky territory, mouth watering smells coming from inside said giant blocks. He warns his pack not to steal anything, as he is familiar with the human culture, or at least as much as he can be. They gradually end up wandering towards a brown pen, he frowns. He can smell other viscets.
enemies? are they going to make his pack fight to stay?
he starts backing away, hissing at his pack to follow him; not taking any unnecessary chances.

he motions for his pack to follow them as they flee back the way they had come, back towards the desert. He still has no idea where they'll end up in the end but there's no more trusting humans. He'll protect his pack with his life, as he does now, once again leading them towards their destiny.

Re: Viscet #346 | Open

So let me start off by saying this was extreamly hard to judge. There were a bunch of amazing stories, art, and just over all effort thrown in for this babe. I talked to several staff members, and even a handful of users who dont know what a viscet is and are therefore unbiased in their votes. In the end, the winner was pretty clear. So a huge congrats goes to iBrevity!

The writing style and clarity of the story was not only very well done and extreamly interesting, but it left me drooling for more! This is the kind of skill level I expect to see in famous authors to be honest, and I would love to see more from you in the future.

Now since this babe was a GA design, I cant exactly do runner up viscets. However I can offer a free piece of gift art (drawn by me) to my two second place winners, *Shiveren* and Wolves of Rain. If you two can message me with a link to whichever viscet you would like me to draw Ill try and get it done asap!

Thanks everyone for entering and I seriously wish you the best of luck on future viscets!
