The down pour of chilling rain had lasted the entire night, forming small pools in the matted grass and clotting the dust into piles of slick mud. Beneath the moons elegant beams, a small viscling laid in the muck, her golden antlers tainted brown with wax candles that drooped beneath the weight of the cold water. She sneezed and slowly rolled to her stomach before gazing around in confusion. Moments passed before she slowly attempted to rise, only to fall back down into the thick muck that tainted the forest floor. A pathetic mewling noise escaped her mouth as she tried to call for someone, anyone that was nearby. Her reply was not something she had hoped for.
Ahead, a gruff snorting noise broke the rhythm of the storm and a puff of crystallized air whisked from its mouth. Ahkema squinted through the rain at the towering bear that snuffled at the air before it. The bear rose up and made a huffing noise as though it were uncertain of what to do. Scared, Ahkema cowered back and gazed at the beast with wide eyes. She squeaked in fear once more, pleading for someone to come and help her, but help did not come, and the bears massive paw collided with her side, flinging her several feet before she collided with a tree and darkness consumed her consciousness.
It was the light that got through to her first. A throbbing red that danced wildly against her eyelids and pounded her head with a rock repeatedly. Ahkema groaned and opened her eyes slightly, blinking rapidly in attempts at clearing away the groggy fog that clouded her mind. Sharp memories of the previous night attacked her mind and extracted another pained groan from the viscling. She stood slowly on shaking legs and fell onto all fours. Slowly, she began to stagger foreword, running into trees and rocks from time to time as her eyes fought the sudden light in an attempt to make out what was before her. A bees nest feeling rattled behind her eyes as she tried to open them further, and she quickly squinted her eye lids shut again. At this rate, she had barely even covered three feet. She had to find a way to clear her hazy mind before continuing onward with her trek. She sniffed at the air, raising her nose high as she did so, and flicked her ears to and fro. The quiet whispering of a stream caught her attention, and the viscling stumbled toward it, tripping over a stone and face-planting into the cold stream. All at once, her sense snapped back to life and the fog was cleared from her mind. Ahkema yanked her head from the water and took a deep breath, the candles that rested upon her horns reigniting as she did so. The viscling shook her head violently and looked around her. "Okay Ahkema, step one: location." The viscling studied every tree and rock in silence before nodding to herself. "The same forest. Step Two: resources. That's easy... The stream and..." A twig snapped and the visclings head shot to face the hare that nibbled at the grass. "And rabbits...." Ahkema crouched, her eyes squinting and her oversized ears flickering foreword. The candles dimmed slightly, as though they understood what was happening, and Ahkema studied her target. Before either was ready, Ahkemas hind legs launched beneath her, slipping on the fresh mud and causing her to topple face first into the ground. The rabbit paused and gazed at her for a moment, before leisurely hopping away.
Ahkema snarled and rose from the mud, shaking in a vain attempt to remove the disgusting stuff. "Yeah! You better run you runt!" Ahkema shouted after the rabbit and flicked her tail in anger before turning sharply and padding away. Perhaps being an herbivore for now would have to do.
•••Seven Years Later•••
The forest was alive with the sing-song churrs of creatures big and small. Animals pranced about carrying on with their daily routine, some playing together happily. The peace of the morning rang like a silver bell, until it was suddenly crushed by a deafening quiet. All at once, everything seemed heavy and slow. The animals fled or stood where they were, gazing wide eyed around, seeking the predator that they knew was there. Deep within the shadows, several cool lights seemed to appear and danced slowly with the faint wind. The animals that noticed, stared at them in curiosity and fear. The flames danced a bit more, before they began to float higher, and the silhouette of a tall, horned Viscet was revealed. Most animals fled, except for one rabbit, who was left gazing at the flickering lights in aw. Ahkema crouched and swept her tail low in excitement. She studied the rabbit quietly, before lunging foreword in a burst of energy. The rabbit grew before her and she opened her jaws in excitement, only to crash into a tree behind the critter. The rabbit fled rapidly, leaving Ahkema with her horns stuck in the low branches of the tree. She grunted and struggled with it, pulling and pushing in every way she could, but it only seemed to get worse. Finally, she gave up and simply stood there, glowering at her golden horns in irritation.
"Looks like you could use some help." A males voice resonated from behind her, and Ahkema tried to turn to face him, though it did not work.
"No, I don't. I will find my way out of this eventually, thank you very much."
"Uh huh.... Well. I'm going to help you anyway."
Ahkema heard heavy paws crunching the fallen leaves on the floor as the male approached her to the left, away from the tree trunk. "I don't need your help! I can do this on my own."
"Oh calm down." The male Viscet, an orange one with a rather peculiar tail, leapt into the tree and pressed his head against the branch that rested above Ahkemas horns and began pushing up. "Okay! Now pull!"
Ahkema hesitated slightly before pulling back. Her horns slipped between the branches with ease and she stumbled slightly before regaining her balance.
The Viscet in the tree smiled at her and hopped down. "Hey there. The names Hollow."
"Hi." Ahkema glared at him slightly, embarrassed about the fact that she needed help. "I'm Ahkema."
"Wow. That's probably the loveliest name I've ever heard. Hey... You look a little lost and beaten up... I've got a pack near by. We can get you some food and clean you up!"
"No thanks. I'm fine on my own."
"Nonsense!" Before Ahkema could protest further, Hollow began herding her to his pack. "Trust me! Your going to love them!"
Ahkema wrote:I am a firm believer in doing what it takes to reach your dreams. I despise the idea of laying idly by and watching, longing as though in the blink of an eye your goal will be complete without any work or effort. Some see me as strict, and possibly even bossy. I am, however, merely trying to teach them that sloth is not welcome here and will not help you reach your dreams.
It is hard for me to not speak out when I see someone moping over something they failed at that they merely put a few minutes into. This always aggravates me and fills my blood with a chill. I do, however, use this time as a lesson to try and teach them what they did wrong and to help them for future goals and desires. I cannot say that they always listen. . .
