Annabelle was born on Christmas Eve in a barn in a town somewhere in the state of Tennessee. When she met Santa Claus on the night of her birthday, she was completely fascinated by his reindeer, especially by the fact that they are able to fly. Ever since then, her biggest wish is to fly herself. Being the favorite calf of Emily, one of the farmer's granddaughters, she was played with a great deal. Emily would often dress her up as a reindeer by putting stick antlers on Annabelle's head and keeping them there with the use of a rope. After dressing her up as a reindeer, Emily would take a rope and have Annabelle hold it in her mouth while she sat on the wooden sled that her grandfather had made for her last Christmas and held onto the two ends of the rope while Annabelle dashed about the farm with Emily in tow. It was great fun and Annabelle always made sure that her best friend was safe when they did this, she considered it to not only be fun, but also special training for the day when she could fly and Santa would make her one of his reindeer.
The other Buttermilks thought Annabelle was silly and naive, they criticized Annabelle's mother for allowing her to continue having this illusion that Santa would someday at least grant her wish to fly or make her one of his reindeer, but her mother saw no harm in allowing her calf to dream. For these dreams didn't harm anyone and since Annabelle wasn't leaping off of things trying to fly, why couldn't her calf continue to dream?
So as Annabelle grew, she continued to hope and dream, knowing that if she was a good Buttermilk, Santa would be sure to grant her her wish someday. It was one of the dreams that helped her through the farm's tough times when Emily's grandfather got sick and was unable to work around the farm and times got really tough.
The other Buttermilks still thought that Annabelle was ridiculous, especially for continuing to hold onto her silly dreams of flying and being one of Santa's reindeer, but she didn't care what they thought. Sure her head might be in the clouds, but what was the harm in it being up there? She liked to dream and she liked to believe that her dreams would someday come true. She liked to think that this quality was one of the reasons why she was kept on the farm even when many of the other Buttermilks on the farm were sold off to help keep the farm afloat, other than the fact that she was Emily's favorite and the grandfather couldn't bear to sell her off and face his granddaughter's face if she were to find out.
As they grew up, Annabelle and Emily remained close and played often, until the day that Emily grew too old to want play the games that they used to play and Annabelle didn't get to see her much until Emily got married, and had children of her own. Emily's children would play with Annabelle too and she'd take them around the farm just like she did with Emily, with the sticks tied to her head with rope and everything. She was always the favorite Buttermilk on the farm and was considered the Christmas Buttermilk in the town and was often dressed up as a reindeer during the month of December with a big red bow around her neck above her bell collar and she always gave sleigh rides to children.
She still dreams of being a real reindeer even though she's an adult Buttermilke now, but maybe, just maybe, her dreams will finally come true.
