story: There I'm done! What, you may ask? Decorating for Christmas, you silly! I haven't quite figured out the customs of these people I live with. But one year, when I wasn't to sure about why I had moved here or who these strangers were, I was very timid. I was worried, I didn't know any of these strange horses, so usually I hid in the barn, and stayed separate in the fields. Soon it started to get colder, and even though I had my winter coat early I still felt empty. I saw how happy the others were and how nice the people who tended them were. One morning the routine was a little different. Boxes were brought in to the barn and stacked, all over the place. Piles upon piles of boxes, the likes I had never seen before. I watched as they were brought in sticking my nose over the stall door and each time a person would pass they would pat me, tell me I was a good boy, and move on to the next set of boxes.
Now you have to understand I'm extremely curious at heart, but my fear and apprehension about this new place had kept that side of me under wraps. I just couldn't understand what business these boxes had all over the aisles of the barn. And why some of them smelt so good! So I was determined, that night I was going to find out what the boxes had, and why they were there. I waited patiently until everyone had eaten their dinner and each were peacefully snug and sleeping. I lipped at the lock, I had seen it done many times up and over, with a loud clang I was free. My ears flipped back in worry though as my stall door swung to hard and banged the stall beside me. A panicked whinny, then a mare stuck her head out of her stall with a very angry look, angry at me! I hunkered down and scooted backwards back into my stall, and worried I was going to get into trouble. But luckily the mare just grumbled and moved around in her stall. I peeked back out and tried my best to be stealthy and I went to the boxes closest to my stall. I nosed some around, to hopefully find the most appealing one. Whatever was inside must be good, it smelled wonderful! I couldn't seem to get the box open though, but after kicking it around some it's contents spilled out all over the floor. By now many of the horses near me were curiously sticking their heads out over their stalls, and I was much to interested in my work to worry. there were many things in the box, small baubles and brightly colored balls that popped really loudly if i accidentally stepped on them and grass that wasn't grass, it smelled bad and didn't taste good so I spit all of that out. But what I did find, and follow me here, they were small crooked sticks, with colors all over them. And they were my mission, I tried one and they were heaven! I happily crunched another and another. and by now the whole ban was awake and nickering at me, they all wanted some as well. So I happily obliged, each horse down the line got a wonderful treat. And each was truly grateful! The next morning I could hear the people coming up to the barn door I was worried they would get mad at me for getting into the boxes and strewing everything all around.
The door opened and all I could hear was a little giggle, oh no! I had forgotten to shut my door! They would know it was me, then suddenly the person, the nice lady who always fed us was in my doorway her hands on her hips "Cas, you silly monster, did you make this mess?" All I could do was look up at her, and try to give her my cutest, "nope not me" look. She laughed and got close to my muzzle, "yup you got into the candy canes didn't you? Don't try to deny it! I can smell them on your breath!" She laid a kiss on my nose and went back out, I'm guessing to clean up my mess. But when I peeked back out of my open door she was actually dumping all of the contents out and throwing all the colorful objects all over each door. Decorating!! Now of course I do this every year, but I get better and better, and it's like a game because she tries harder and harder to make sure my door is locked, but I have a talent she says! So Happy Holidays everyone and may your halls be fully decked!!!
