(Written from the perspective of an anthro)
Ring ring.
A small, silver bell tinkles merrily above your head as you push open the shop's door and enter into 'Madam Velia Divine's Psychic Readings and Fortune Telling'. The fact that she could fit all of that onto one sign was impressive enough, let alone the interior of the shop itself. You were immediately greeted with the scent of various incense wafting towards you the minute you walked into the dimly candle-lit shop, then once your gaze adjusted, you scanned the various items and pieces of furniture decorating the small space.
Before you was a quaint room walled and floored with two different types of wooden panels. In the center of the room, a large red carpet featuring intricate black and gold designs covered a majority of the floor boards, and even as you stepped onto it, you could still hear the faint sound of muffled creaking below your paws. Lining the walls were tall, black shelves containing unlit candles, jars and bowls of insence (some burning, some not), books, decks of cards, boxes of seemingly unrelated knick-knacks, and various other items you weren't quite familiar with, and directly in front of the shelves save for a small space in between were many different candles of various shapes and colors on the floor, lit and illuminating the room. The candles basically covered the whole floor except for a three-foot-wide path in the very center; where you were walking. Ahead of you, in front of the far wall, was a wooden counter with more candles, insence, and a bell on it, and beyond that, a doorway covered by a red and gold curtain. There was another doorway behind the counter on the right wall, but it was shut and labeled by a sign that read, "No customers allowed". Padding up to the counter with a slightly uneasy feeling, you shook away your nerves and rang the bell, and your were almost instantly answered with a "I'll be there in a moment."
You need not wait long before a figure steps through the curtains. She is a tall Plumie with a slim physique, dressed in a black gown, silver cloak, and various pieces of silver jewelry. Her most noticable feature, you believe, would be her eyes: black eyes with glowing silver orbs. You stare at her for a few moments, clearly unsure of what to say or think, and she smiles, obviously used to such reactions and probably amused by them. She strides calmly to the counter and looks down at you with a warm expression, her hands folded on the counter.
"You're a tad younger than most of my usual customers. Then again, you're never too young to start down the path of the spiritual arts." She gazes down at you for a few more seconds, then snickers and says, "You're lost, aren't you?"
But no; you weren't lost. In fact, you actually came to this shop with a purpose far more than merely seeking a psychic reading. You were a reporter for your school's newspaper, and as of late, not many interesting stories had been reported. In such a small town, very little happened, so even the official newspapers were just barely getting by, let alone some little school newspaper. Everyone had been trying to put their heads together for this one, and then, you thought if it. Madam Velia was a mysterious Plumie that set up her shop on the outskirts of town. Quite a few of the town's residents had gone to see her, and when they came back, they always had this far off look in there eyes, like their mind had been opened to a whole new world. She was subtly admired for her work by some, and disdainfully put down by others- specifically those who didn't believe in intuition or 'the spirits'. Either way, nonetheless, she rarely ever left her shop to associate with anyone else. No one really knew anything about her; she was a mystery. Therefore, finding out who she really was and how she came to be here would make the perfect story, you thought. Thus why you were standing before her now; you were boldy going to ask about her history. You shook your head and told her you did want reading, and even offered her some money. Seemingly a bit surprised, she shook her head and said, "I enjoy introducing Plumerians to the spiritual world, and in turn, I'd like them to enjoy it too. First one's free." Eyeing you curiously for a few more seconds, she moves to the side and lifts up a door built into the counter, letting you through and guiding you into the back room.
The room is much darker than the main shop because there were fewer candles in here, and they were not as evenly spaced as the other ones. All of these candles formed a small circle in the center of the room, and inside the circle were four red cushions surrounding a crystal ball. This room smells of incense too, but you can't see where it is because of the darkness. "Come." She motions you with a wave of her hand and sits down cross-legged on the cushion nearest to the ball. You sit down directly across from her, then stare at your reflection in the ball for a few more seconds as you debate how to ask her about her past. You then look up to find her staring at you with an intense gaze, her glowing eyes slightly narrowed and seemingly staring right through you. Your mouth runs dry as you nervously lock gazes with her.
"So little one... I'd be correct to assume you aren't really here for a reading?"
You feel your heart drop and your stomach clench as the woman cooly points out your real intentions. Could she really be that psychic..? After staring you down for a few more seconds, she sighs and rolls her eyes. "Oh don't look so shocked. For one thing, I've never had a child come out here on their own before; with a parent? Sometimes. Alone? Never. Second of all, even if a child did come out here alone with the intentions of getting a reading, they usually wouldn't bring a bag so heavy with supplies." She nods to the satchel at your side containing your notepad, pencils, and camera, which you had almost forgot you had, due to the strangeness of the environment. You give her a sheepish grin before she asks, "So, why are you truly here then?"

The Life of a Psychic
At an age too young for the Plumie to remember, her parents lives were taken from her in a car accident, causing the young girl to be sent off to her grandmother's. There she was raised by the strict elder for the remainder of her childhood. Her grandmother was a grumpy old thing, one of those old people that constantly grumbled about how lost the new generation was and warned youngers to stay off her lawn, and that fact that she was basically a hermit didn't help matters either. Needles to say, having to deal with such a snappy, impatient person since she could talk is probably how Velia became so patient with other Plumerians.
Despite her grandmother's attitude, the young Plumie still greatly respected her. She was strong, and wise, and was always doing mysterious activities that seemed so fascinating and other-worldly to Velia. As it would turn out, her grandmother was a psychic, and her "mysterious activities" included meditation, card and crystal ball predictions, and a series of other things like that. Deeply intrigued, Velia attempted to approach her grandmother to ask if she could learn, but the older Plumie growled at her to stay away from such practices, saying it took a great gift to be able to communicate with the other side.
Saddened but too headstrong to give up (a trait she also inherited from her gran), Velia decided that she would try to start out on her own. She would sneak into her grandmother's study at night and read books on the practices, then would return to her room to meditate, sleep, then meditate again first thing in the morning. This was kept up for about two weeks before her grandmother became suspicious and the young Plumie was finally caught. Though the elder didn't approve, she could sense just how much her granddaughter desired to learn, so with a heavy sigh, she beckoned Velia to a reading table and decided to test her abilities. The test she used was a simple card prediction; the elder would lay down three cards in a specific order, where only she would know the order, and it was up to Velia to predict what the order was. This would be done five times. To her great astonishment, each time she did this, Velia predicted the order correctly. It was then the elder realized her granddaughter could have potential; a simple guessing game couldn't prove much, but perhaps with a little more training, she could see what abilities the young Plumie really possessed.
From there, you can guess what happened, so there's no need to heavily elaborate. Velia began to learn everything her grandmother knew, she progressively showed more signs of having "the gift", and her relationship with her grandmother grew closer and closer. Unlike the secluded elder, Velia wanted to get out and share her gift with others, or at the very least, make a few friends. Though she was homeschooled by her grandmother, she wasn't afraid to go out and mingle with other Plumies her age. Unfortunately, some of the kids found her to be odd and unsettling because of the reputation her grandmother had and the younger's strange glowing eyes. So, even though she made a few loose friendships, they always seemed to keep themselves at a distance, so she never really grew firmly attached to anyone. It made her upset others saw her this way, but after a lengthy period of deep meditation and counseling from her grandmother, she eventually accepted this and decided she wouldn't let it stop her from sharing her gift; she'd just do it... Alone. Perhaps as she got older, the others would mature and accept her more.
As time went on and Velia began to delve deeper into the spirit world, she began to wonder about her parents. What were they like? How would her life have changed if she'd known them? Been raised by them? And most importantly... Could she used her abilities to communicate with them? The idea was gnawing at her for what seemed like an eternity, as if a door had suddenly been open and it refused to shut, the darkness beyond the threshold tempting her onward. Eventually, she decided to start studying up on the subject of communicating with spirits, from seances to ouija boards and all other nonsense. She was truly bent on seeing her parents, but unfortunately, just as she felt she was getting closer, her grandmother began to fall ill with old age, putting a stop the the nineteen-year-old's plans so she could care for the elder. It wasn't long before she passed on, leaving Velia in a grievous state, alone once more. She decided to move on with her life and travelled away from her childhood home, her way of trying to leave the past behind. Through her grief, she moved from town to town, looking for places she could possibly set up a psychic buisiness. It wasn't until she was twenty-three that she could financially stand on her own two (or four) feet and really get her buisiness going.
From time to time, she still wonders about her parents, but seeing how her grandmother died whilst she was attempting to medal with the spirit world, it has left her with a sickening feeling that perhaps some things are best left alone...
