The Wendigo was gaunt to the point of emaciation, its desiccated skin pulled tautly over its bones. With its bones pushing out against its skin, its complexion the ash gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave....Unclean and suffering from suppurations of the flesh, the Wendigo gave off a strange and eerie odor of decay and decomposition, of death and corruption.
~ Basil Johnston (Ojibwe teacher/scholar)

Previous Name:
Larkin

Current Name:
Niko

Gender:
Male

Theme Song:
Mirror (Extended) - RWBY

Medical Condition:
Pseudobulbar affect

What did he do on Halloween?
His eyes flickered open. He felt no warmth next to him, and knew instantly they were gone. He stood, looking for his parents. His tiny paws made imprints in the snow as he trudged out, looking for his family. His mother had just been there, sleeping next to him with his father next to her. Where had they gone? It was the middle of the night, for crying out loud! They should be sleeping, not out for a frolicking!
He narrowed his eyes and crouched low to the ground when he heard the voices approaching.
"C'mon, just grab 'em!"
"Nah, they look feral. Let's leave 'em be - you don't wanna get bit, do ya?"
"Come ON! They ain't gonna do you no harm. See? I just touched that one, and - OW! It bit me!"
"See. Told you - YACK! WHY IS IT COMING CLOSER?!"
There was a scuffle. Larkin looked up, his green eyes clouded with worry as he stared at the fight, his parents clearly losing. Stealing his chance, he leapt forward, growling at the two intruders. One of them kicked him so hard he flew through the air, landing against the trunk of a tree with a THUNK! He slid down it and landed in a snowdrift so deep it covered his entire body. Stunned from the cold and the pain in his sides, he shakily dug his way out of the snowdrift.
But it was too late.
His parents were gone.
They lay in the middle of the highway, still in the now-quiet night, the intruders gone.
Larkin snuffled, trying to smell the familiar scents of home. He couldn't find them among the wind and snow that steadily floated down from the heavens. He lay beside his parents, tears welling up in his eyes as he drifted off to a fitful sleep...never to wake again.
Or so most beings thought.
Nearly frozen to death, three weeks later he came back. He dug his way out of the snow that had piled upon him and his parents, and found himself starving for substance. After hunting, he logically thought of what to do next. Pointless to stay here. Parents are gone - what should I do? I guess I'm on my own now. Tears were steadily streaming down his cheeks - he wasn't sad, but depressed.
The tears never stopped running.
Neither did he.

Personality:
In His Younger Years...
Larkin was very polite, always helping others and wanting to go out of his way to show his gratitude. He was always certain to thank everyone he met for anything they did for him, and held open doors for them as frequently as he wanted to. While he was very shy and recluse, he was lovable for his great ability to swim and his agility - he never tripped or fell, nor did he run into things, as other RPWs his age constantly did. His growth-spurt went perfectly, and he never really went through an "awkward" period of his life, in terms of what his body looked like. Very empathetic and focused, when he set his mind to doing a task he'd do it perfectly, making sure that it was done properly the first time around so that he wouldn't have to repeat the job at a later date. While he didn't have the best sight, he had excellent hearing, and could hear conversations most others didn't even try to understand. He was very good at sneaking up on others, but growing up an only child, he never had any siblings he could practice this gift upon, so he'd do it frequently to his friends when they'd play outside. A happy and joyous being, Larkin tried his best to have a positive look on life, and was doing his absolute greatest to help those closest to him to be just as happy as he was.

In Recent Years...
Depressed and done with life, Niko doesn't care about what others think at all. He snaps at others easily, and is very irritable and grouchy. On his better days, he is recluse, refusing to be around anyone and wanting to just be left alone. If provoked, he will transform from his normal complacent self into a raging ball of fury, snarling and hissing at anyone who dares get too close. He has lost his sense of politeness, and doesn't give a rip if others are offended by anything he chooses to blurt out. He is not at all good at socializing, and his previously-shy nature has turned into an all-out Scrooge, refusing to be kind to anyone, or even give them the time of day. He his hearing is superb, and his eyes are very sharp as well, so whenever he hears or sees another RPW close by, he turns and runs off, wishing to never come in contact with anyone of his species again. Now, his sense of smell has died with age, and his nose is so run-down that he can't practically smell anything anymore - but the few things he can smell aren't pleasant - stuff like blood, meat, and other particularly smelly RPWs are the only things that his sniffer can even pick up anymore. Because his fragile body decays with every day he is alive, he no longer has the energy or agility he once had, and prefers to amble slowly than chase down prey - though, if need be, he does have short periods of time where he can get quite a bit of a running streak up...though he burns out very quickly, and has to rest shortly afterwards. He is accurate, however, still getting what he wants by any means necessary. He is also fairly focused, though he can be distracted by the emotions that eat his insides out, just as time does to his body. A predator by nature, he excels at hunting, fighting, and climbing. Nothing can slow him down when he wants to get something - he'd climb a mountain just to get to the rabbit at the top. He is excellent at sneaking up on others, as his paw-steps are very light. Somehow, even with all the fur weighting him down, he is as silent as a mouse when he walks - no one can even hear him approaching. His defense skills are a tad bit rusty, having been alone for so long, but when he's angered he'll lash out at whoever is nearby - whether or not they insulted him. His speed is excellent - what he lacks in intelligence and strength he makes up for in his quickness. In the snow he seems to be fastest - his paws grip the icy surfaces better than the gravel or dirt that most RPWs can run easiest on. Overall, his emotional state is a train-wreck, and he absolutely hates coming in contact with others, so he'll shy away at even the slightest sound or glimpse of something. He may seem skittish, but it's honestly for the best - you wouldn't want to come across him at night and feel the effects of the depression and fury that wrack his body every waking hour.

ɴᴀᴍᴇ ↝ Keme Tobinsen || keh mee . toe bin sen
    ɢᴇɴᴅᴇʀ ↝ Agender || masculine pronouns (he/him)
ᴍᴇᴀɴɪɴɢ ↝ Secret; thunder || Algonquin origin

    ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ ↝
bashful || As cocky and relaxed as Keme may seem among family and friends, he's surprisingly shy when in front of large crowds. Unfortunately so, as his dream is to become a bit magician one day. He gets nervous when in large crowds, especially when all the attention is trained on him. This proves difficult when it comes to performances. Often, Keme will get flustered and drop things a lot when he's nervous.

clumsy || Often, wherever Keme goes, broken objects follow. This is yet another trait that isn't particularly good for magicians. Keme is extremely clumsy, often tripping over his own feet and spilling cards everywhere. He's almost lost his dice on multiple occasions due to them falling from his hands when he stumbles.

curious || Keme is always sticking his nose into things he shouldn't be. He can't help his curious nature, and always needs to discover new things. Often, this can get him into more trouble than he expected. Keme is stubborn, though, and if someone tells him "curiosity killed the cat", he'll respond with "at least the damn cat was satisfied" without missing a beat.

stubborn || If Keme has made up his mind, there is no changing that. He's always been stubborn, and sets his mind on something he knows he will do. He knows when to back down and give in though, and will do so if necessary, no matter how much he despises it.

imperturbable || Surprisingly, Keme is extremely laid-back most of the time - particularly in the company of friends or family. During those times he performs a trick for his friends, he drops the melodrama and sits back, enjoying the reactions with a smug smile. Keme rarely gets mad, and never aggressive. He's insufferably hard to annoy, no matter how much pen clicking or paper scrunching there may be.

    ʜᴀʟʟᴏᴡᴇᴇɴ ᴘʟᴀɴs ↝
Keme owns a set of curious dice he picked up at a market once upon a time. Unbeknownst to him at the time, the dice were in fact designed to contact spirits, and had a single spirit attached to them. The die themselves had the alphabet and numbers etched into them, and work in a similar way to a ouija board. Every halloween, kids like to gather around the front of the old church while Keme performs certain "tricks" with these dice, much to the entertainment of the kids. The spirit likes to answer questions, and always does so truthfully - it can often predict the near future with absolute accuracy.

Keme wandered through the markets, admiring the various things here and there that caught his eye. His attention was drawn to a small table at the end of the street - one with a deep purple cloth and feathers. He moved towards the stall only to discover that the stall was selling magician tricks. Keme excitedly scanned the objects on the table - trick cards, fake thumbs, "magic" quills and more. Keme's eyes were drawn to a small, black box. It was unmarked and was sitting at the back of the table. He reached across to grab it when a hand grasped his wrist, firmly locking it in place.

Keme looked up, startled. The salesman fixed his eyes on Keme, his gaze never wavering.
"I-I was just looking," Keme stammered out his apology, feeling uncomfortable at the salesman's stare.
"That's a special box, for special objects," the salesman said in a gruff voice. "You don' go messin' with things like them."
"What's in the box?" Keme asked curiously, pulling his wrist away. The salesman raised an eyebrow and grabbed the small box, giving it a little shake. He slid the box open and tipped out a collection of odd-looking dice.

The dice were patterned with intricate swirls and mysterious symbols and letters with the numbers etched into the corners. The dice were wooden and fell out of the box with a clatter, followed by a yellowing piece of paper. There was about five dice in all.
"Dice? What's so special about dice?" Keme asked, cocking his head to one side. He had to admit, they were nice dice.
"You believe in the paranormal, kid?"
"Uh, sure. Never had anything happen to say I shouldn't," Keme said with a shrug, watching fascinated as the salesman clattered the dice around in his hand.
The salesman paused, gently tipping the dice back into the battered box. He glanced at Keme for a moment, cocking his head to one side as though thinking about something. Then, "I think you should buy them. Cheap. Only $2."
Keme didn't think about it twice. He dug around in his pocket, pulling out some loose change. He counted out $2 and handed it over to the salesman.
"You'll enjoy those," he said with a smirk. Keme took the box, thanked the salesman and headed back home.

    ♔ ♔ ♔

Keme lay on his bed, rolling the dice around in his palms. So far, he'd figured the dice had the alphabet on them and the standard one - six numbers, but he couldn't figure out the runes. A clatter and footprints from the kitchen caught his attention.
"Hello? Is someone there?" he asked, dropping the dice on the bed and moving off to check. Nothing - the entire kitchen was empty. Shrugging, Keme returned to his bed to find the dice spread out across the sheets. Three sat perfectly together in the middle, the letters on the faces spelling Y-E-S.

Startled, Keme gathered up the dice again. The salesman's words came back to him - "You believe in the paranormal, kid?"
But no. That's ridiculous. Ghosts speaking through dice?
The more Keme thought about it, the more he found himself wanting to try it again, wanting to see if paranormal really did exist. He sat up on his bed, rolling the dice in his cupped hands.
"Am I...alone?" he asked, feeling slightly stupid as he tossed the dice onto the bed. As they did before, most of the dice scattered in random directions, leaving only two in the middle. N-O.

Keme could almost swear he felt a cold chill sweep through the room.
"Looks like I won't be able to play Snakes and Ladders with these, then," he said with a nervous laugh, trying to brush off the who scenario. He was weary to put the dice down, afraid of what they might spell out. He didn't roll them this time, but placed them gently down on the bed. The swivelled around of their own accord.
    A-R-E Y-O-U A-F-R-A-I-D

"S-should I be?" he asked, tentatively scooping up the dice and tossing them back down onto the bed.
    Y-E-S
    ♔ ♔ ♔

Nowadays, Keme keeps the dice on him wherever he goes. One of his most famous tricks is fortune telling with the dice, as the spirit attached to them has an uncanny knack of predicting the near future. People love the magic of a dice that answers questions, and many sceptics try to out Keme's trick - there's only one problem. It's not a trick.
