Green turned to gold as leaves fell on the path around the phantom-like Hazard that trotted through it's damp dirt. It had been months since Hymnal had taken this path and she could feel it, the one haunting memory that never seemed to fade away even when the rest of her slowly was.
It had been winter at the time, sparkling snowflakes decorating each pelt and jacket, polka dotting each red scarf with white. School had only just started when the battle began, and every student was told to run home as fast as they possibly could, even though it had been obvious that it was incredibly dangerous. Hymnal grabbed the coat sleeve of her best friend who was quite younger than her. "I'll protect you, I promise." And the children fled. They headed out and down the path, the snow coming down thicker and the booming of war too close for comfort. Hymnal had let go of her friend's paw as she saw someone in front of her trip over their tail, and she helped them up and continued running. That's when she heard it. It pierced through her brain like someone tearing open her soul, and the scream was as bloodcurdling as it split through the icy winds. Hymnal turned in dread to see him, the snow quickly burying him as he fell into the snow. She screamed at the top of her lungs and the memory faded.
She walked over to the old tree in the present-day and placed a small rose she had been holding right at it's roots. She stared through teary eyes at the wooden cross that stuck out crookedly from the cold mud. The little ghost that always follows her came out from playful hiding and flitted next to her, shedding some tears as well as it recognized the path. Hymnal let out a sad laugh.
"Like strawberries in the summertime."
