Name; Upon The Nile // Vesta
Gender; Mare
Jewel Color; Ruby
Short Story;
The day of her birth began quietly. Her mother bore her as the sun was rising. Vesta lay a long time on the cold sand. So long that the shepherd thought that this filly of noble blood, who's dam came from a lineage beyond even the earliest records, was born dead and still. But it was not to be. Vesta, named after a goddess of fire, woke as the sun warmed the earth and looked around with wde, suddenly alert eyes, first at her towering dam, and then the wrinkled old man who tended the Arabian herd. And after looking about, with the sun a shining crescent on the horizon and the sky flaming orange, reflecting off of her coat, she stood, wobbled, fell, and stood again. When she was solid, she neighed to the sky, and a wind stirred the sands briefly. While the shepherd leaned on his staff and watched in quiet amazement at the miracle of this new life, Vesta quieted, and nursed.

Name; Ana Bahebak // Arwa
Gender; female
Jewel Color; an emerald stone
Short Story;
Arwa was not born in the desert but she dreamt of it.
She dreamt of the hot days and the cool nights, of the slither of scaly creatures and the soft noises of bats. She dreamt of the scent of a flowering cactus and the blossoms that might grow recklessly on an oasis' edge. She dreamt of the sweet sensation of water when the skin was stinging from sand, of the pressure of the sun on her back and the heat coiling in her trembling muscles.
When she first came to the desert it did not disappoint. The heat struck her the most, how it drew sweat from her flesh upon first contact, how it made her shift and paw at the ground. The sand was next, the sheer weightlessness of it, the feeling of climbing up a sand dune and sliding in the furrows her slender hooves made. She was left untethered, trusted to stay close to her mother's side but Arwa was always an independent and clever child and so she went into the sand alone.
She did not get lost, as one might suspect. She ran across the flat plains of the desert and felt the shiver in her legs and the movement of the sand beneath her; she ran until she was breathless with it, panting in the heat, staring thoughtfully at a distant smear of green on the horizon. When she approached she realized it was a mess of short, spindly trees and green-leaved bushes with gnarled branches that had grown scantily around a shallow pool of water. Arwa laughed to herself in pleasure, leaned down to touch her nose to the water and smelled the cleanliness of it, the purity.
When she came back to her mother dark with sweat and with her emerald eyes gleaming her mother smiled. “Did you find what you were looking for, Arwa?” She asked, lowering her head to meet her foal's eyes.
Arwa smiled in kind. “Yes ommah,” she said, giving her a whiskery kiss. “I found everything I had dreamed of.”

[itty bitty note for myself; Ana Bahebak is Arabic for 'I love you' and Arwa is an Arabian name meaning 'pure water']

Name; Surviving The Sahara // Jade
Gender; Mare
Jewel Color; Same as eye color, or topaz
Short Story; My eyes fluttered open slowly. Once, twice, three times before they finally stayed open. Next to me lay another creature; mother. I could feel her heartbeat, a steady pulse against my body. I'm not sure how much time had passed (enough to feel like an eternity) before I attempted to stand. After a few tries I became stable, and ran out of the little shack where I was born.
As I took my first step outside, I was startled. I hadn't realized how bone-dry the air was. My excitement must've distracted me, or maybe I was just that ignorant. Scanning my surroundings, aside from the village, I saw a great deal of barren, unwelcoming land and dunes, dunes everywhere. As I stepped on the land, to my surprise, it moved underneath my hoof. I let out a bit of a shriek. Was land supposed to move? Soon enough my mother came over to calm me down.
"Why does it move?" I asked, wondering.
"Because," she paused. How could she explain something like this so that I would understand? She smiled and gazed down at me. "Because unlike other land, sand is free. It's free to move around instead of stay in one place, packed together with the other pieces. Free to travel, like you might one day."
ahh, this was so hard you guys, everyone had awesome stories, but i really connected with this one. congrats eulee c:
