[PERSONALITY]
Hostile | Mute | Skittish | Impulsive | Stubborn | Withdrawn | Independent | Distant | Alert | Downcast
Unlike many orphans, Xiuhcoatl's personality is not at all influenced by those of his adoptive parents. Rather, his character was exclusively moulded from his life from when he still lived with his biological parents, and from his experiences of the stage between his abandonment and adoption.
Xiuhcoatl is an enigma in the strongest degree of the word: What is known of him is only what is observed of him. You see, Xiuhcoatl is a mute. It is unknown whether he is silent by choice or whether he was simply never taught English yet he can, and does however, vocalise through the likes of grunts, growls, hisses and yelps, among others. As well as seemingly being unable to speak, at times he is rather unresponsive and ignorant to others' attempts to interact with him. So communicating with Xiuhcoatl is a task in itself, let alone getting him to actually do what you ask of him.
Xiuhcoatl is incredibly wary in new situations and he always seems to be on guard, surveying his surroundings for potential threats.
He is easily spooked and takes a primal approach to whatever scares him: He attacks it, whether it be his own shadow or even a member of his family who happens to sneak up on him.
In fact, Xiuhcoatl acts in ways which are almost feral, opting to lash out and fight when provoked or frightened rather than flee or try to settle conflicts with words. Instead of talking about his feelings one is left to interpret Xiuhcoatl's body language and the vocalizations he produces in order to understand what he wants.
And he does not usually want much. Xiuhcoatl has no interest in hobbies or socialising, and is usually spotted sleeping or wandering around seemingly aimlessly. He is often condescendingly likened to a pet dog or wild animal by those who do not understand him due to his erratic and distant behaviour, yet unlike a pet he shows no desire for attention, is constantly unenthused and is not at all affectionate. In fact, Xiuhcoatl does not form attachments to anything: He has no favourite toy, shows no preferences towards foods and does not seem to want to form any sort of relationship with anyone or anything; his metal bands and coat are exempt from this statement. Despite this though, Xiuhcoatl is not fond of sharing, often becoming aggressive when someone gets too close while he is eating, or when someone goes to touch one of his possessions.
It almost seems as though Xiuhcoatl is just a body with no occupied mind.
But this is not true. He has a soul and he has a character, despite what may appear otherwise. Xiuhcoatl sees himself as an outcast, as a freak, and this mentality was driven into him at a young age. Having been born into a clan of extremely twisted and archaic beans, when Xiuhcoatl was born he was ridiculed and labelled a 'snake' due to his appearance. He was relentlessly shunned for his differences, eventually leading to his banishment. He was led to believe that violence and his primal instincts were all he needed to survive (and later, he found that succumbing to them made it easier to cope with his loneliness and self-loathing), and by the time he was forced from his clan, it was all he knew.

[EDITS]
╔══════════════════════╗
• Extremely short "buzz cut" fur •
His fur is less than a centimetre long all
over his body, is fairly shiny and smoothe and
lays completely flat. His tail, cheeks and
fluffy lip are excepted.
• Cheek fur •
It is long and rigid, and clumps together
when he is frightened, giving the
appearance of a mane or quills from a distance.
It is still fur however and usually flops
down like that of a lynx.
• Long, thin ears •
They could be likened to that of a
doberman (show cropped aesthetic) or a bat, and
are ridged and devoid of fur on the inside.
• Extremely long, whip-like tail fluff •
The tail tuft is almost as long as the tail
itself.
• Long, flat claws like that of a lizard •
• Longer tongue; still forked •

[SCARS]
╔══════════════════════╗
• 'COATL' above his shoulder •
Before he was outcaste, the clan elders
maliciously carved 'coatl', meaning snake
in Nahuatl, into his skin.
• 2 nestled crescent shaped scars on his tail •
These gashes are the result of him simply
flicking himself with his tail accidentally,
a rather anticlimactic explanation.

[ACCESSORIES]
╔══════════════════════╗
• A number of chains and bands
with 'Xiuhcoatl' engraved into them •
They are of an unknown dull metal and
some are cracked and chipped. These bands
are his only form of identification, and
whether Xiuhcoatl is even his real name or
just his label remains a mystery.
• Wolverine Pelt cloak •
When Xiuhcoatl was abandoned, the tiny
dragon would often pose and hiss like a
snake to deter predators. However, predators
that hunt snakes had quite the opposite
reaction, the Wolverine being one of them.
After stumbling across an old Wolverine
carcass, he adopted its dried pelt as his new
guise. It is somewhat ironic of his being:
The snake being protected by the beast
which hunts him.
• Metal snake bracelet on his tail •
The origin of this bracelet is unknown,
but its appropriateness is uncanny.
Perhaps one day Xiuhcoatl will reveal
its story.

════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Xiuhcoatl's edits are supposed to give him a threatening and almost reptilian appearance to reflect his wild demeanour. His long tongue is the most obvious embodiment of this, and he uses it accordingly, on occasion opting to hiss at what or whom he deems a threat.
The lack of fluffy fur takes away a bit of the cute factor that JBDs possess, yet I felt the retention of the cheek fur in the style of a lynx adds a bit more of an untamed, but sleek addition to his appearance.
I decided that giving him long tail fur (rather than an extremely short tuft to replicate that of a lizard or snake) reflects how his hostile nature is hidden behind a facade of normality: At first glance Xiuhcoatl's tail is more or less like that of any other bean, yet the fact that he can fashion it into a weapon of self defence reflects his hostility, resourcefulness and desire to survive. Additionally, the fact that Xiuhcoatl feels the need to have a weapon such as this to protect himself in the first place shows the deep-rooted fear he has of the world around him, and also shows how his knee-jerk reaction to what scares him is to attack it, rather than using rationality to investigate first.
Finally, I think that Xiuhcoatl's large ears give him an alert, 'uncuddly' and almost mature appearance, as well as theoretically giving him a heightened sense of hearing to complement his feral character.
Xiuhcoatl's accessories do not exactly reflect his character, but more so complement it as a whole. The wolverine pelt solidifies the 'wild' aspect of his personality, but also makes him a little bit more intimidating, especially as a child. The broken chains, as well as being an integral part of his backstory, signify how despite being free from his old life, Xiuhcoatl still feels confined as an individual: Though he has a loving family, he is still hostile and distant, as acting in this way is all he really knows - old habits die hard as they say. Finally, the snake bracelet is simply a more obvious allusion to the 'snake' theme I based his character off, just in case there weren't enough hints dropped already!

[ADOPTIVE PARENTS]
Dante x Isis
Both owned by me
Dante and Isis do not act as parents to Xiuhcoatl, but more like guardians who watch over him and keep him out of trouble. Despite initially giving it their all, they have grown to understand that Xiuhcoatl will not be receptive to their efforts to teach him and raise him as their own. Instead, they allow him to simply co-exist with them: If Xiuhcoatl wants to be left alone, they will leave him be and watch out for him from a distance, and if he decides to follow them around on their daily errands, they will gladly let him do so. Dante and Isis acknowledge Xiuhcoatl's desire for independence and space, and they give it to him, whilst also providing an environment of safety, food, and if he ever chooses to accept it, their love and company.
[DANTE]
Dante was the first to find Xiuhcoatl, wandering alone in part of the forest on the family's property. Dante had an unpleasant first encounter, his cheek having been sliced open from a single flick of the frightened child's tail to his face. Realising that Xiuhcoatl was more unruly than most, he was hesitant to coax the child back to his home and risk his family being attacked. Yet he does not regret that decision, even if Xiuhcoatl's lack of discipline and inability to reason does get frustrating at times. Dante is not the type of bean to lash out however, and so instead chooses to make himself scarce during Xiuhcoatl's more rowdy phases. Consequently, Xiuhcoatl does not see much of his adoptive father unless he tags along on one on Dante's hunting trips, where both boys quite enjoy one another's company as neither are particularly loquacious. Xiuhcoatl is honestly intrigued by Dante, if not a bit frightened, especially since Dante has his own scars, but he cannot deny the sense of security and protection Dante emits.
[ISIS]
Isis' warmth and friendly persona are inviting to Xiuhcoatl. Though he does not feel completely at ease with anyone, Isis in particular gives him a sense of safety and comfort which he has never experienced before. Xiuhcoatl trusts Isis more than any other bean: She was the first to ever show him real kindness and understanding. She doesn't punish him when he nips or flicks her out of fear and she understands that this young one is nervous and she is patient with him, always keeping her distance unless he approaches her. Xiuhcoatl has a tendency to shyly follow Isis around in the garden, and she will always point out different types of plants and flowers to him as he stares back with wide, receptive eyes. Does he understand her? She doesn't really know, but what she is certain of is that inside this troubled boy is a sweet and curious young bean who is just as deserving of her love as any of her own children. Xiuhcoatl holds a special place in Isis' heart and she is determined to allow him to truly open up and reveal his secrets, no matter how long it takes.
