This said 'shadow' form is caused by a parasite that indeed does look like a shadow, with glowing red eyes and wispy appendages. After taking over a host, the host gains an appearance similar to this as well as all the powers the parasite would have on its own. These include the ability to control the appendages like one would a tail or an extra arm, as well as make prehensiles and fully functional limbs such as arms or legs. They can also extend their existing limbs with this [eg. The move Shadow Claw from Pokemon. ] and make 'moves' to attack. [ Eg. The move Shadow Ball from Pokemon. ]
The host can also alter their transparency in this form, though they have to very skilled to fade entirely from general wolves' sights. If quick enough between disappearing and reappearing, the host can appear the teleport from one place to another, though actual teleportation is incredibly hard to master and requires both the person to remember exactly where they want to go, and the parasite's full cooperation.
The parasite also shares a bit of the host's subconscious and can telepathically talk to the host, and their personality heavily differs from one individual to another. Most, however, have a love for wrecking havoc and once their host switches to the shadow form, they both taunt the host into doing their bidding and will not cooperate with what the host originally set out to do.
Those born with the form rather than infested often have better control if their parasites, and can often gain the parasite's full cooperation with little work.
Though should the parasite itself be taunted by someone other than the host, or just simply have a reason to, it can fully take over the host's body and speak through the host's mouth due to suppressing their conscious. Sudden personality changes and intense glowing of the eyes often signify when the host is no longer in control of their actions, and can do little but watch unless they have the strength of will needed to overthrow the shadow.
While every host/parasite pair have a different weakness, there are a few ways to get the shadow to temporarily retreat into the host's mind if the host is in shadow mode. Some examples are pulling on the host's ears, or calling out their name. These often trigger a response so powerful that it catches the parasite by surprise and scares them off for a bit. Sources or bright light or intense heat are also a universal weakness of the shadows.

The last thing to note about this, is that the shadow can and often will grant their host one revival should their host die. After a host dies the parasite must find another host suited to their needs which is often troublesome, so rather than let that happen they just revive their host's body. Though this often comes with a price; some aren't able to switch back to their normal forms at all after being revived by a shadow, and are left with the shadow having just as much control as the host on a regular basis.
