Calvin awoke with a groan. He slowly opened his eyes to see the clock read 4:07 A.M. “of course it is,” he muttered in disgust. Turning over he tried to fall back asleep with Nadine snuggling against his side. A half hour passes before Calvin finally gives up on trying to go back to sleep. He gently removed himself from Nadine’s embrace and rolled out of the bed. It was then he got the idea to surprise Nadine, and turned off the alarms.

Nadine hazily stretched as she gained consciousness. She blinked several times as she opened her eyes to the morning light. “Mmmm... What time is it? 11:16... 1:16!!!” She hurriedly jumped out of bed, awakening the two lazy pups that had joined her in sleeping in, and quickly got dressed. She rushed into the kitchen only to halt at what she saw.
Calvin had made her brunch and left it out for her to find. He had also left a note for her:
Calvin wrote:Nadi,
I figured I’d let you sleep in today and that I’d give you the day off. You’ve been doing so much around here I just felt guilty. Also, I made you breakfast (I hope it’s not cold when you get up). Kinda miss how I’d always cook your breakfast, even if it was usually oatmeal.
Love Cal
“Aww, Cal... Such a sweetheart.” Nadine couldn’t help but blush and smile. She took a bite out of a strip of bacon and found it was cold. She sighed, feeling guilty about sleeping in, and put some of the food in the microwave to reheat it.
As the microwave did its thing Nadine went to the window. She smiled warmly when she saw Calvin in the paddock working with Ciri.
Calvin had managed to start lunging Ciri. He couldn’t help but feel like he was being watched, but he kept his focus. Sweat was beading on his forehead from the heat and he was tempted to remove his shirt once he was done with Ciri.
Nadine turned away for only a moment. When she looked back she gasped and ran from the kitchen to leave the house.
Calvin had been thrown to the ground and nearly kicked in the head as Ciri panicked and bucked. He rolled away from her hooves and looked up in time to see Nadine coming for him. He raised his hand, telling her to stay back.
As Ciri panicked a cat that had been sitting outside the paddock fled in terror. Only a glimpse of it had been seen, but it was enough for Nadine to make a choice. She ignored Calvin’s warning and went to him, helping him up.
Calvin leaned on Nadine as she helped him limp to safety, away from the panicked Ciri. “Nadi! You were supposed to stay out!”
“Do you really think I would’ve left you out there where you could be trampled to death!?”
Calvin sighed and shook his head. “No. I suppose not.”
She nodded, “good. Are you ok?” Concern replaced her stern annoyance, and she began looking him over for more injuries.
Calvin nodded. “I’m fine, no need to fuss. Just twisted my leg, so I’ll have a limp. Possibly some bruising too.” He winced as he flexed his leg. “Did you see what spooked her?”
“Yes, it was another cat.”
He muttered a curse under his breath.
“I want you to keep one of the dogs with you when you’re working with Ciri, ok? If you were injured worse or...” She began to try and hold back tears.
“Shhh... It’s ok Nadi, I’m ok. Just relax.” Calvin pulled her into a hug and kissed her temple. “I promise that after today I will.” He held her for another few minutes before pulling away. “I have to calm Ciri, will you be ok?”
Nadine nodded and wiped her eyes. She stepped back and watched as he limped towards the mare. His calming words seemed to sooth them both. Upon his return she helped him back inside the house with orders to stay off his leg the rest of the day.
