Name: Mallico ‘Malley’ Jackson
Gender: Male
Cat's name & why:
Ding dong
He opened the door.
“Sooooo what did you name him?”
A blinding smile glared back at him.
“Cat.”
The smile fell instantly.
“Seriously?! You’ve got to be kidding me, you’ve owned him for 5 months and all you’ve managed to come up with is cat??”
Mallico steps out of his doorway and into the tiny apartment space, carrying Cat in his arms like a baby.
“Technically, he’s only been mine three months. The first two I was under the impression he belonged to someone else. However, I was lied to so-“
“Even so, there has been plenty of time for a better name! I can’t believe you, at least call him Tiger or something.”
Mallico scowled at the suggestion, the woman following him inside. Mallico settled himself on the floral printed once-white-now-grey couch, digging one hand into a bowl of popcorn while the other remained curled around his furry companion.
“No, every orange cat ever has been named Tiger. I’m not going to be that guy,” Malley grunted, stuffing his face while staring at the screen, the woman sitting next to him.
“It’s gotta rewind so hold on a sec” he reached over and plucked the remote off the table, clicking the backwards arrow and watching as the tape played in reverse.
They fell silent as they waited for the tape to reset, she watched as Mallico offered a bit of popcorn to Cat. It was rather adorable how dotting he was.
“See, I told you that animals could help.”
Malley let his eyes shift over to her, at first with irritation an then with something else. Once he gaze returned to the orange tabby he began running his hands across its back, feeling the vibrations of its purring.
“Yea… Though I’m still ticked that you lied to me about it.”
In a way the woman felt bad for being dishonest, but there was no way she could regret it after seeing the affection Mallico had gained. For months she has pushed Mallico to get a pet, trying to convince him that it could help his depression. Each time he ignored her, totally convinced that all he needed was his medications. She’d tricked him into ‘cat-watching’ her cat while she went out of town, but in reality the cat was never her. Just a stray from the shelter that seemed loveable. There had been conflict when he realized he’d been fooled, but seeing him fall all over the cat made everything worth it.
“He’s got you wrapped around his paws” she giggled, but was hushed as the movie began.
A Disney classic, the Aristocats, played across the screen and the pair of friends watched with mild interest. Cat seemed to be the most intrigued, poking his head up from behind Mallico’s arms to peer at the colorful images. Everything was quiet until- "OMG IT’S SO PERFECT!!!”
Malley jerked his head away, gritting at the loud sounds of his friends squealing voice. The woman was practically jumping up and down in her seat, drowning in a fit of glee and she cried out,” Thomas!! Name him Thomas, that way you can be Thomas and Malley, like Thomas O’Malley!!!!”
“Uh, who?”
“The cat you dummy! Weren’t you listening to the movie?? You have to name him Thomas.”
Mallico glanced down at the cat, then back at his friend. He supposed it was about time he named the beast. Thomas wasn't such a bad name, simple and easy to remember.
So, which a shrug of his shoulders he flatly said;“Alright, Thomas it is.”
