First Touch
The sun's rays touched the earth, warming the ground. I crossed the yard to the stables where Arathorn and Andromeda- my newest Nera- currently resided in. She'd only arrived yesterday, rather late in the afternoon at that. I'd had very little contact with her as of now; my goal today was to get her semi-used to me.

"Hey guys!" I greeted, my voice carrying about the barn for several moments before dying away. At the sound of my voice, Arathorn raised his head, ears perked curiously. Andromeda snorted softly and swished her tail halfheartedly. I strode over to Arathorn's stall and reached through the bars. I stroked his muzzle for several seconds, immediately regretting my decision not to bring any treats.
Once I had finished up with Arathorn I turned on my heel and headed to Andromeda's stall. The creature was standing near the gate, seemingly curious as to what I was doing, head tilted ever so slightly. "Hi girl," I said gently, so as not to scare her. Andromeda shifted her body and sniffed my outstretched palm, surprisingly calm. Cautiously, I moved my hand closer, gently rubbing her muzzle. Quite contrary to what I'd expected, she did not snort and dance back; instead, she simply held still while I patted her.

I closed the stable door behind me with a dull thud. "Well, that certainly went better then I'd expected."

First Saddle
I led Andromeda down to the arena, feeling a strong sense of happiness. It was a gorgeous day, perfect for riding. Or in my case, training.
I was excited to train Andromeda, for she seemed like she would make an excellent companion to go on rides with. Her mellow personality would make her very safe to ride, as well as very fun.
I looped the lead about one of the poles, tying it in such a fashion that would make it easy for me to untie, but impossible to unwind if one were to simply pull back forcefully. I knew a Nera could untie it if they were to try, because they were very intelligent and had hands that enabled them to, but I had high doubts that Andro would.
"Alright." I said cheerfully, scooting the mountain block over to Andromeda's side. She lowered her head and sniffed it once, accepting its presence almost instantly. I patted her neck before I turned away for the saddle pad, inching it along the fence post until it reached her, where I allowed her to investigate it. I had hoped she wouldn't react the same way Wendell had, and she didn't. "Good." I said to her. After the saddle pad had been adjusted on the creature before me, I repeated the same method with the saddle.
Andromeda was fine with both of them; not once had she spooked at their presence.
It was going to be fun to ride her, I could tell.

First Ride
Since Andromeda was okay with the tack, and she was full of energy, I decided to ride her for the first time that day.
Upon first climbing onto her back and seeing if she would respond, the only thing I got was a wall of confusion; she didn't know what the movement was supposed to signify.
I suddenly thought of a plan that I'd heard worked for many people.
I had taught Arathorn several voice commands in my free time, out of boredom and to see if he'd be willing to learn them. Once of those was "walk." Maybe if I brought Arathorn out and told him to walk forward with no rider, Andromeda would follow?

"Okay boy!" I called out to the blue-and-white-furred gelding in front of me. "Walk!" Arathorn sprang into a fast-paced walk, seeming confused as to why he needed to be here.
Andromeda began to follow Arathorn, and when she did so I placed my heels gently to her sides and kicked gently. After around fifteen minutes, I stepped down from the mare and haltered Arathorn, leading him from the arena and tying him near the entrance; if Andro understood now, I would put him away.
I hoisted myself atop Andromeda, taking a deep breath. I gently placed my heels to her sides and she walked forward without hesitation. "Good girl!" I exclaimed, beyond proud. I drew her to a stop and dismounted, patting her neck. I slid my hands into the pockets of my hoodie, searching for something-such as a mint- that I could give her as a treat. I felt the crinkle of a plastic wrapper and pulled it out; within was a slightly crushed peppermint. I pulled the wrapper off and set the candy atop my palm. I extended towards Andromeda. She sniffed the treat I'd offered her and gently took it with her teeth. She crunched with ease between her jaws, seeming to delight in its minty taste.

After I'd un-tacked her and put her and Arathorn away, I couldn't help but feel pride- for Andromeda and myself.
