First Saddle

"Oracle took little time to grow up big and strong. He was the tallest in the herd yet, and still seemed to have a lithe figure. His little mane grew as well, and he became quite particular about it, to the point he would huff and stomp his feet if I tried to touch it. In fact, he was doing an awful lot of huffing lately. He hated working, and just wanted to play play play all the time. Still, I managed to turn as much of his training into games, and that seemed to calm his anger. I led him out of his stall and into the ring in the early morning, where a new saddle was waiting for him at the loading post. He sniffed it over causally and tossed his head, turning away to pounce on rocks and in turn trying to get the lead rope out of my grip. I hushed him and taped his flank with my crop, coaxing him back toward the post. I tied him and watched as he tried licking the rope free, grinning at me with the goofiest look on his face. I chuckled and stroked his neck, minding his mane, before picking up the lightweight saddle. I set it on his back gently, letting him grasp at the straps and nuzzle the leather. As he was distracted by checking everything out, I secured the straps tightly and stood back. He shivered and shook, hoping about in annoyance. I clicked at him, and as soon as he calmed tossed him a juicy rat. He slurped it down and gave me an annoyed sigh, leaving me to do whatever I was going to do. I warily picked up his bridle and showed him the bit, hoping he would take it and then freak out, but with no luck. He snapped at me and snorted, baring his teeth. He had obviously had enough. I sighed put my hand over his snout, pulling his head down to my level and then whispered softly in his ears. He calmed and nuzzled my shoulder, but still kept his distance from the bridle hanging over the fence. I decided to try that some other time, when he was more willing, and took solace in being able to strap a saddle onto him at all."

First Ride

"It had taken longer than I had originally hoped for Oracle to relax around the saddle. Even longer for him to take the bit. After a while, I decided to just stop trying it. Some neras were just not meant to be strapped down! Lucky for him, I was already well accustomed to riding bareback, and wasnt afraid to try it out on him if need be. I led him out to the ring, and tried the saddle again. He seemed alright, if not a little annoyed, but as soon as the straps were being tightened he snapped at me. I gave him a good tap with the crop and tried again, but he wasnt having it. I knew there was no point in fighting a nera like that, so I just tossed the saddle over the fence and untied his lead. He began his little happy dance, grinning at me triumphantly, as he always did when he got his way. I smirked and pulled the lead rope over towards the fence and climbed onto the highest rung. I caled him closer with the promise of treats, and as soon as he was close enough I put all my weight onto his side. He huffed and shrugged, attempting to push me off, but I pulled at his lead and yapped a commanding 'stay!' at him. He seemed startled at the sudden strength in my voice, always having been used to my gentle whispers and praise, and so he lowered his head in defeat. I praised him sternly for as long as he stood still, and tried again. This time he stood, not leaning away from me as before, and simply took the weight shift like a proper nera. I scrambled to make it all the way to the center of his back, gripping the lead rope with one hand and his shoulder with my other. Once I was settled I could feel the annoyance radiating off of him like a heat wave, and felt his nervous energy down to the core. I gave him a click and set him forward lightly, and he booked it around the ring. I simply held on and let him tire himself out before trying to pull him back in, but he threw his head and stomped the ground instead. I gave his mane a tugg and snapped at him, simultaneously giving him a clip of the crop, and watched as he snorted and scuffed the ground with one foot like a defeated toddler. I led him around the ring on my own accord a few times and then dismounted, praising him all the while. He still seemed angry with me for being so stern, but that was easily fixed with a quick game of tag. It seemed he really would be a foal at heart forever and ever."
