personality;
Derek comes off as a charming plumerian even though he often tries not to be the center of attention.Even though he hates to be in the spotlight, his kindness does not diminish. Social venues are not his forte, instead he'd much rather be at his cozy little home with a pen and paper scribbling down words to take himself on an adventure where no one can reach him. Since he loves writing and adventures, he also loves books.
Being the cheerful guy that he is, he always looks on the bright side. However this refusal to avoid looking at the bad side of things is a huge flaw. Derek tends to get hurt by this type of attitude as he never sees the bad things that will come back to bite him in his plumerian rump. After being knocked off his paws from this blindside attack Derek can find himself bouncing back within the next couple of days as like most people he can't just shrug it off.
Derek is not a picky Plumerian as he finds it makes him come off as rude to others when offered something and he says no so even if it's something he doesn't like [Such as pancakes] he'll take it and try his best to deal with it without looking like it's more work than it should be.
Riddles are a key thing to what makes Derek well Derek. For he's had a love of riddles ever since he can remember which has had a large effect on his personality. He speaks in mostly made up riddles which he makes up on the spot to make his conversations a bit more difficult to understand. Getting him to answer a question means you'll get a question in response which you need to answer to get his original answer.

It wasn't the day Derek had originally planned for himself. No, he had planned to spend all day locked up inside his house, hidden under his blankets and writing, with every so often a cookie and a hot chocolate break. Instead the lack of said snack materials had sent him out into the roofless and bird-filled outer world. His paw steps were quick on the concrete sidewalk as he made his way to the local grocery store, which was just a few blocks away. With the bright summer sun beating down on his furry body, the trip seemed much longer than it was. Then when his paws triggered the sensor to make the automatic doors slide open, a blast of frigid cold air hit him in the face. It wasn't only the happily welcomed air that hit him in the face, but a bright red balloon came across his face as well. It swept his hair to the side as it did, covering his eyes.
Suddenly a childish chuckle rang in his ears. Wanting to know the owner of this red menace he used a paw to push his hair out of his eyes. Dull grey-green eyes had caught the sight of a brightly colored child. On his tail was tied a red mickey mouse looking balloon and plastered on the boy's face was a mischievous grin. "Pardon me," Derek spoke, interrupting the laughter of the child. "If there's an elephant in your way what would you wish for it to do?"
The small child turned his head to look back, trying to stop his laughter with a friendly smile. The younger one's bright pink gradient to orange hair moved barely as he stood just under the air conditioner , never getting blasted by the air. "Oops, I'm sorry-Wait what?" He asked confused by the way Derek spoke.
"Simply answer my riddle and you shall know what I have asked," he said still holding a polite smile, he never looked at this child when he spoke. Instead his eyes were watching the balloon more so than the other Plumerian.
Derek wouldn't admit it out loud, and he hated to admit it to himself in his head even, but he liked watching people try and solve his riddles. "If there's an elephant in your way what would you wish for it to do?" Luka said/murmured to himself, repeating Derek's riddle as he thought long and hard [Well just about two minutes]. "I would like it to move?"
Derek nodded. "You have solved the Word Magician's trick," he said ,congratulating the young boy as he stepped past the bright one to enter the store. "Goodbye young one," Derek added. Inside he didn't stop to glance at the flashy displays to lure him into buying something he didn't need. "Who needs 'grapes so juicy you'll be swimming in them' or Aloe-Vera-scented toilet paper that is good for your health??" Derek thought to himself as he turned down the aisle he came for.
With his peanut butter chip cookies and a box of ten hot chocolate mixes he checked out and headed home. This plumie had had enough of being social for one day.

════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════❉It's All Just Riddles❉
It had been at least a month since Derek had first met Luka, the child that carried around his red mickey mouse head balloon. Soon after that first encounter the two had met again, this time at a movie rental shop. Derek had been looking to grab something to watch while he wasn't feeling well enough to read or write or even just sleep it off. And now they were sitting together out in Derek's little backyard, drinking some nice, ice cold lemonade and his favorite cookies, peanut butter chip. "So Derek why don't you look at people when you talk to them?" Luka had asked after biting down on his straw and sipping up a nice amount of lemonade.
"Just for the reason a bird will not finish all of a monarch butterfly for a snack," Derek spoke, his everlasting smile only leaving for when he bit down on a cookie, fangs sinking into the soft dough.
In response, Luka just chuckled. Like always it was his first response to when Derek would speak to him. The forever young Plumerian could never get past how Derek continuously was able to speak in a way of riddles. "You're like a Word Magician." He would say to the older one sometimes when he was done with his little laughter.
The truth was Luka rarely knew how to answer the riddles he was given and more often than not, was left without an answer. This time he did know the answer well enough. Monarchs were not a butterfly species that tasted good to birds, but they'd still eat them. At least until all the good parts were eaten, and then spit them back out. "Is it because if you look at them for too long you'll start to see the bad in them and not the good? Though only when they speak because you'll hear the truth in their words?" Luka asked.
"Yes, my mother had always told me that when you look at someone when they speak you will not hear the truth in their words, but instead you will hear lies as you twist their words based on their looks," he said softly, answering something not in the form of a riddle, a rare thing for him.
Taking a long sip of lemonade, Derek used a paw to push his hat up onto his head, far enough that it would not fall off and onto the table. He hated that dull thump the hat made when it fell onto tables. "I wish you would speak more like you just did," Luka said softly.
"What speaks in riddles and never argues while yet the opposite of it speaks without riddles and forever fights?" Derek asked Luka carefully taking his hat off and setting it aside as he looked the plate. Stationed in the middle of the pastel like mosaic table, the white plate held their afternoon snack.
With a heavy sigh Luka let it go. He really didn't want his friend to change who he was especially when he spoke in riddles he thought up at that moment or though up all by himself most times. "I'm sorry Derek."
