Story:

The stallion lifted his head and turned into the wind, his flaxen forelock blowing back to reveal his dark eyes that were fixed on the horizon. There was a storm coming, he could smell it. His ears swiveled, searching for the thunder that he knew would come soon. The skin over his withers twitched with anxiety. Storms always reminded him of the night when everything changed...

He woke with a start, every muscle tense and ready to flee. It sounded and felt like the world was coming to an end. He resisted the urge to run and find his mother, missing the solid comfort she always provided. But he was over a year old now, and she had pushed him away. He knew she might not welcome him back now. No, he had to face whatever this was alone.

It happened again, the loud crack and low rumbling that shook the very dunes the herd stood on. A zig zag of light split the sky, followed by a flash that lit the desert like it was noon, but only for a moment. He heard the shrill calls of terrified foals, followed by the comforting nickers of their mothers. He looked for the lead stallion and mare, for any older herd member really, for some sign of comfort.

The crack and rumble again, louder this time, followed closely by the zig zag and flashing light. They came so close together it startled him and he called out...the call he used for his mother. He listened but there was no response. His breathing quickened and a light sweat broke out across his neck. He just wanted to run, but he had no idea where to go. He heard the herd gathering between some dunes and moved to follow them; at least he wouldn't be alone.

He had only taken a few steps when the crack and rumble came again, this time the zig zag light and flash were almost at the same time. The zig zag light touched the sand a few feet to his left. The noise and light, combined with the searing heat was too much for him to handle and he bolted. He had no idea where he was going, but he needed to get away.

As he started running, the rain started pouring from the sky so hard he couldn't see in front of him. He didn't care. He ran as hard and as fast as he could, just wanting away from the noise and light. He herd the calls of his herd behind him at first, but they quickly faded to nothing in the pouring rain. At first the rumbling and light got worse and each strike pushed him faster. He'd never run so fast in his life and it felt like his heart was going to burst. He stumbled to his knees a few times but recovered quickly and resumed his blind galloping into the night.

He wasn't sure how long he had been running, he only knew he couldn't go much farther. His legs burned, as did his lungs. He slowed some and realized it was no longer raining and the sounds and light were far behind him. He was determined to run until they were gone. He couldn't risk them catching him. He pushed on, his pace closer to a canter than a full on gallop. It was nearing dawn and he could make out the outline of a ridge of tall dunes not too far ahead of him. He made his goal making it to the other side his goal.

His legs shook as he started the ascent and it took all of his concentration and strength to keep going. He fell to his knees a few times, the last time at the very top and he wasn't sure he could get back up. He stayed for a moment, his nose flaring wide with every breath, his heart racing. He couldn't stop now, it would be safer at the bottom. He pushed himself up and wobbled his way down the slope to the bottom of the dunes.

He was greeted by a scent he'd never encountered before. There were other horses...but something else. He wanted to go investigate but as he took a few steps his legs gave out and he crumbled to the sand. He dropped his head down, realizing he was too exhausted to go on. The last thing he saw as his eyes started to slip shut was some creature he'd never seen before, slowly approaching...on two legs. Something he'd heard from his mother once briefly crossed his mind before he lost consciousness...humans.

He had been lucky the young girl found him when she did. The storm he had been so violently out running had caught up with him a few hours later. By that time he was safely sedated in a box stall with IV fluids coursing through him. He had run so hard and fast and sweat so much he was extremely dehydrated. He had also strained all of his tendons and worn the bottom of his hooves down so they were painfully tender.

In the months the girl spent nursing him to health they had formed and incredibly strong bond. She'd named him Fade because the vets kept telling her he wasn't going to make it because he kept fading in and of consciousness the first few days. She started calling him Fade as an act of defiance and the name just stuck.

When they day came for her to return him to the wild, he calmly followed her back to the stables when she had taken his halter off out in the sand dunes. He had no desire to go back to the desert. His girl always took care of him and kept him safe, and he returned the favor whenever she rode him.

The sound of distant thunder snapped him out of his memories. He turned and called towards the barn as the girl came around the corner.

"I know, I know. I hear the storm. I'm coming."

She swung the arena gate open and patted his neck as she slipped his halter on.

"Come on Fade, lets get you in your stall before it gets here. You'll be okay."

He gently wuffed at her hair and nudged her shoulder with his nose to hurry her along. They were half way to his stall when the thunder rumbled in the distance. He trembled slightly and she laid a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"It's not supposed to be too bad, but I'll stay with you if it is, okay?"

He replied with a soft nicker and stopped trembling. At least he knew he'd never be alone and scared again; whatever storm came, they would weather it together.

Horse's Name: Rozar
Name Meaning: "rose garden"
Height: 16hh
Gender: Stallion
Rarity: Rare
Story/Art: Darkness consumed him.

Darkness consumed him and the light was gone and it was her fault.

Rozar looked fitfully around himself. It was the twelfth hour of night, the time where the desert whispered softly in the ears of men and horses alike, urging them to find their peace in the heart of the sands. He felt its' churning song and the ground thrumming underneath his hooves, beckoning him towards the horizon. Many nights he had resisted, but no more.

With one final, parting glance towards her, Rozar stepped one-two-three onto the cool expanse of the desert. With every sure-footed movement he grew more solidified in his choice. He would start anew, find an oasis free of her influence to begin his new life.

Rozar walked and galloped and finally grew so hopelessly lost he could not return even if he wanted to. The young stallion with soul asunder became fearful, swallowed by the dark and eaten by the night.

He awoke suddenly, with the taste of rust in his mouth. Palm leaves swayed gently against his flank, dappling the ground with hazy shadows. Pricked ears brought no sound of trouble, and so Rozar picked his way between the plants to follow the smell of water. When he reached the spring he felt as if he'd never seen something so beautiful in his life. As he bent his head to drink the cool, clear water, the sound of approaching hooves alerted him of the presence of others --danger--.

But he did not hide, for Rozar, born of Matka, does not whimper in the face of power.
The herd that whinnied and tramped on their way towards the water was a small one. They did not reek of betrayal and misery as his birth herd did, and were lead by a stocky young mare - nothing like the grace and deceit of her.

The female who led seemed not to notice him, or else she did and didn't care. A young colt slurped water from the stream, and Rozar looked at him wistfully. Oh, but he was so thirsty.

Another of the mares, this one long-haired, approached him. But he did not run.

"Come, drink with us. Stay a while." her soft words rang of hope, and of truth, and Rozar found himself speaking before thought.

"Yes, I think I'd like that."

And so he did.

I'm extending this for 2 more days. I am very disappointed. Plenty of time was given out.
