How They Lost Their Leg; Tomorrow used to be an sentry dog in the army. She was trained to alert others if there were unknown people near by to warn them of an ambush or snipers at night usually. On her night shift, Morrow was sent with her owner to seek out any strange people. She had accidentally stepped on an abandoned land mine from a passed war that had been forgotten about. The mine exploded and had taken Morrow's leg and sent shrapnel into her ear. Morrow and her owner were immediately rushed to the nearest medical center to be taken care of. The people there were not experienced with dogs and had great trouble treating poor Morrow. She nearly died, but the doctors had managed to stitch her up well enough to send her to the a top veterinary facility for proper treatment. After recovery, Morrow and her owner reunited. Morrow's owner decided to retire her from the army and send her into a more pampered lifestyle to calm her nerves.
How They'll Feel Comfortable At Their New Home; Morrow will be given a prosthetic leg so she will have an easier time moving and will feel less like an outcast. She will be kept in a comfortable kennel with a soft bed and a couple of toys. Her kennel will have a dog door so she can have access to the outdoors. The dog door will be larger so she can easily fit her and her new leg through. She will be cared for by loving people and will have top veterinary care to deal with any discomfort she feels. She will be treated just like any dog to help her feel like she fits in.

However, she warms up to them quickly once she figures they are not a threat to her or her owner. Despite only having three legs, you will rarely see Morrow sitting down. She is almost always running and jumping about with the other dogs. Being the goofy girl she is, you'll often see her getting into trouble because of something she played with or chewed up. No one can ever really stay mad at this girl though.

How He Lost His Leg:
It was a car that took the use of my leg. It was the week before the Westminster and my master and I were working hard- we wanted that ribbon more than we wanted to breathe. I could feel the energy coming from him. As much as I wanted to tug away from him, I knew I had to wait- he was leading.
Parking was across the road from the park where we practiced. The sun was out and a breeze blew quietly, cooling the air. It seemed that nothing, simply nothing could go wrong on such a perfect day. My tail wagged and I smiled up at my master as he came to let me out of the car.
I followed obediently at his heels, tail high and grey eyes bright. That's when our perfect day to practice, fell apart. I didn't hear the car, and my master didn't see it. There was the sharp squeal of tires and the shout of my master's voice- then nothing.
Everything buzzed around my like static before it faded. It seemed like forever before I woke, and my leg was stiff and I couldn't move it. I was groggy and I couldn't stand or think straight. I just wanted to go home and be with my master. WiP

*sorry, this might end up in a wall of text but as my right leg is weak/ill, I feel really connected with this Kelpie*

Age: 3 years

How He Lost His Leg: I don't know what exactly happened before but I found Altaïr trapped in a sling of a poacher. The poor Kelpie must have been trapped there for several days because he seemed to be extremely weak and even started to bite his leg in the hope that he could escape. He looked more dead than alive when I freed him from the sling and even wasn't able to stand up. But there was this expression in his eyes which told me that he didn't want to give up.
I called a friend and together we took him to a vet clinic. To doctors there even didn't try to give us hope. Nevertheless they medicated him. His paw was badly injured and although they searched for other ways to heal him they had to amputate it. After this surgery he stayed a few days at the clinic and finally I took him home. But somehow he didn't get better. Far from it! He seemed to become a bit more weak with every day that passed by. We returned to the clinic where the vets found the reason for his bad condition. An infection crawled up his leg bones and poisoned him. The vets tried to heal him with an antibiotic but it didn't work. Altaïr faded with every hour that passed by.
I would lie if I said it was no hard time. And there even were a few moments when I wanted to tell the vets to put this dog down. But then he raised his head and looked at me as if he wanted to say that he was still a fighter and he could bear it.
The vets and I decided to give it a last try. In a final surgery they removed all the infected flesh and bone. They had to amputate nearly the whole leg.
It took a few days - and they felt like years - but finally Altaïr started to recover. I can't say it for sure but he seemed to be thankful that we didn't give up. Soon he was strong enough to stand up and he learned to handle his handicap quite fast.

How He'll Feel Comfortable At His New Home: Honestly I do less than most might expect. There are a few minor things like avoiding stairs and regular vet checks of his remaining legs. The most important thing is to treat him as a normal dog. Aside from his missing leg he is a vivid and healthy dog who loves to run, to go for a walk and play with some dog friends. Therefore I don't treat him different. Ok, I must admit I have to slow him from time to time. Altaïr can be a bit wild and literally flies with the other dogs through the park. With regard to the strain of his remaining legs I take care that he doesn't overstrain them too much. But I combine this with other nice things. Swimming together is a great thing because it's more gentle to his joints.
And I must admit I share my couch with him.

About his name: Altaïrs names are both speaking ones.
Can't Stop Flying pokes on his vivid behaviour and the fact that he handles his handicap quite well. When people see him running over the meadow they sometimes don't realize his handicap on the first view. He has just three legs, yes, but that would never stop him.
His call name, Altaïr, is related to his show name. Altaïr is the brightest star in the constellation Aquilla and the twelfth brigthest star in the northern night sky.

The cut in his ear or where he came from: Altaïr already had this cut in his ear when I found him. As it seemed he was no wild dog I started an own little research if someone was missing a Kelpie with such a striking ear. It took a while but I finally found some hints.
I was not Altaïr first owner. He formally belonged to an old lady who got him as a present by her relatives. I don't want to judge the fact that a Kelpie might not be the best companion for an old person. Well, I think it is quite obvious that she wasn't able to handle him. When he grew up, this wild boy wanted to compete with some older dogs from his neighborhood. On a walk with his owner he broke away from her and started to provoke a really dominant dog. The fight was short and ended with a bloody ear for Altaïr, two shocked owners and the knowledge that he was probably not the right companion for an old lady. From this day on she tried to find a new home for him but unfortunately she died before he got a new home. Altaïr strayed a bit through the neighborhood and everyone care a bit for him. But before the old ladies relatives came to fetch him up he just disappeared. Although it isn't possible it seemed he knew that they didn't know what was good for him.
He probably searched for a new place to stay, when he got trapped by the poachers sling.

How They Lost Their Leg: As far as I know she lost her leg from a car accident during the Canada Day celebrations. I say that this is my knowledge because I'm not entirely sure what had happened. It was about 10pm on July 1st, and her current owners went to meet with family to go see the fireworks that go off in celebration of Canada Day. The dog was left at home where she had less of a chance to be frightened by the loud crack and boom of fireworks going off. So while the owners were busy enjoying the show, someone else was using the loud noises to cover up the sound of them breaking and entering houses. He wasn't from that neighborhood and was unawares that the house had a Belgian Kelpie inside. As far as the police could tell from the scene when they arrived, the would-be-robber had broken lock-picked the front door since it was shadowed between hedges that lined the front walkway. After that point it seemed that he had started navigating around and gathering anything that looks like value into his backpack. It was when he was starting to unplug the sound system in the living room that Ragna came into the room teeth flashing. She had gotten training to be a guard dog so she wasn't afraid to confront this intruder, unfortunately for her he had a gun on him. When she came launching at him, he panicked as far as the cops could tell and his aim had been off when pulling the trigger so the bullet went through her ear. Judging from the blood splattered around she had stopped to shake her head from the pain, giving the intruder time to make it to the front door. That still hadn't stopped Ragna and she came tearing after him out the front door, much to the robber's delight a car happened to be speeding past and Ragna was the one that got in the way. Police officers arrived on scene for the reported gunshot and suspected break in, they called in backup to start looking for the suspect while one of them with a kind heart loaded the severely injured BK into the police vehicle and brought her to a 24/7 emergency animal hospital. It was from some of the cops I work with for training police dogs that I heard about this amazing dog that had to lose a hind leg because the injury was too much to ever have a hope of healing normally without undue pain. Now sadly not everyone can handle owning a dog that has gone through something traumatic like losing a limb and they told the clinic that they would be interested in rehoming her. She had been trained as a guard dog and in their eyes could never do so without having all paws on the ground. After doing some research in how to help dogs having had a limb amputated get used to this new adventure in life, everything was set and the owners were contacted. Ragna will be joining Mercenary Kennels in a few days when the leg is healed up enough, until then I'll be visiting her everyday and learning how to help her with the aid of the hospital employees.

not a hero

Postby Novi » Mon Jul 06, 2015 12:57 am

Show Name: Don't Test the Joker
    Call Name: Spade
    Sex: Female

    Eye color: Grey
    Collar color: Red
Phenotype: Liver tipped sable with irregular minimum white and snowflake
    Genotype: kk/bb/DD/Ayas/ee/gg/Ssp/tt/mm/XX/ZZ

    Parent: ---

How She Lost Her Leg: Spade never was a hero. In fact, she was quite the spoiled brat. In her old home, everything was handed to her on a silver platter. Food, toys, affection... She got everything a dog could ever want. To most, she had the perfect life, and Spade absolutely adored the attention. But of course, good things never do last, do they?
It was late at night, and Spade had gone to bed with her humans particularly early. Something about a big hike the next day, so everyone was fairly excited. Spade always was the heavy sleeper of the lot, so when she knocked out, almost nothing could wake her.
Nothing, that is, except for a loud crack and the sharp scent of smoke hitting her nostrils.
Light grey eyes immediately shot open, and her head snapped up just in time to see a burning beam crashing down in front of her. Apparently, her master's electric heating blanket had caught ablaze in the middle of the night. In a frenzied panic, the man grabbed his wife and two daughters and raced out into the street, completely forgetting about their beloved Spade.
Spade was scared. No, wait. Scared was an understatement. Spade was terrified. The dog immediately got to her paws and bounded over the beam, attempting to find a way out of the house. Her mind had gone to survival mode, so the only thing on her mind was staying alive.
Suddenly, another loud cracking sound hit her ears, just as a burning beam crashed down atop her, crushing her right back leg. A high-pitched, human-like wail emitted from her maw; luckily, this scream was loud enough for the firemen around the corner to hear.
Spade was rushed to the animal hospital, where her leg was amputated due to severe third-degree burns. (It would've been considered inhumane to keep it there, as the damage would've left her with a permanent limp.) Her beloved master soon found he could not care for a special needs animal, so he left her (reluctantly) in the hands of City of Silence Kennels.
Ripped Ear?: This was an incident that occurred long before the amputation of Spade's leg. It wasn't the fault of another dog, or even Spade's recklessness; rather, it was all due to one of the little girls that Spade used to live with. You see, the little girl had wanted to play with Spade - a little too roughly, admittedly - so she grabbed her little BeDazzler gun and went at it. All she wanted to do was give Spade an ear piercing, like she had, but of course, things never turn out the way you expect them to. Spade immediately panicked when she felt a sharp pain shooting through her left ear, and tore away from the little girl quickly, earning her that tiny nick in her ear.
How They'll Feel Comfortable At Their New Home: Being in a new environment can be scary, and those of us at City of Silence Kennels understand that. We will not force Spade to do anything she doesn't wish to do; rather, we'll let her alone for the first few days as she gets used to her environment. To avoid the other dogs from believing that there's an intruder afoot, we'll take them out to the fields and slowly introduce them. Spade will be able to have her time alone, and if she pleases, to play with the other dogs - but only with careful supervision. We don't want an unintentional fight to break out! We'll then see if she likes a prosthetic leg; if she does not, then we won't force her to wear it. We only want to see what keeps her happy, so she can live a great life. We'll also have little training sessions, where Spade is exercised daily. She'll be rehabilitated properly; in no time, she'll be able to walk up and down the stairs and run around like a normal dog would! Overall, she'll be loved.

Personality: Before the fire, Spade was a spoiled, friendly dog who thrived off attention. But now that her leg has been amputated, and she has been taken away from the family she's grown up around, Spade has become awful reclusive and...well, mean. She's highly mistrustful of the caretakers at City of Silence, and rarely, if ever, goes out to see the other dogs. She's rather shy, and usually just lays down in her kennel all day, staring outside and watching the other two show dogs play. Sometimes, she wishes she could join them. She wants to be happy again. But then, she looks at her stump of a leg, and grows cold again. One day, however, she may learn to warm up to everyone at City of Silence. We hope that day will come soon.
    Relationships:
    • Remi: The only male at City of Silence, and perhaps the most persistent out of the two currently living there. Oxford Remedy is always showing up outside of Spade's kennel, pawing at the door and beckoning her to join him and Bandit as they roam around the land and wreak havoc. Spade usually just watches him as he bounces around her, trying to encourage her to get out and play. Sometimes she'll snap at him or growl as warning, but usually, she just stares at him blankly. As much as she hates to admit it, this playful idiot is growing on her...
    • Bandit: Currently the only female at City of Silence, Thief in the Night is a total sweetheart who just so happens to be a little piggy. She enjoys messing around with Remi, but usually stays away from Spade out of fear. Don't get her wrong; she does want to be friends with Spade. It's just... Spade can be really cruel and cold-hearted sometimes, so Bandit just sticks to the sidelines while Remi tries to get Spade to come out of her shell.

About Me: Hello! I am tsuya, a teenage male in the United States. I am an aspiring author/artist/animator who currently is working on his own animated series, and I own two BK's, currently! Both of which are listed in this form under "relationships", actually. But enough about me. Let's get onto the real reason I'm here!
Why I Want Her: Okay, I know I don't have any art. And I know I don't have any stories. I know I basically have nothing, but just hear me out, okay? I'm hoping this will be the section that wins me this babe. I'm not going to lie and say Spade looks like a dog I used to own. I'm not going to lie and say she's my ultimate dream character or whatever. What I am going to say, however, is that she's beautiful. Her design - missing leg and all - brings forth some interesting concepts I never considered while creating characters, so naturally, that makes me want this girl. Badly. I enjoy writing out her character, as you can see above, and I'd love to write out Spade's misadventures with my BK's, Remi and Bandit. Spade would be given her own little slot on my Kennel Thread, and I'd probably end up writing a story with all my BK's sometime later, so she'll play a pretty important role in that. Although I had no time whatsoever for art, I will try and draw Spade in the future. She might be included in a comic that I was planning out for this, but only if I win her. And finally, I may just end up shipping Spade with Remi, simply because I think the idea of him constantly bugging her to "come out and smell the roses" is just downright adorable. Overall, Spade will be a beloved and cherished character.
