evanescent
/ˌevəˈnes(ə)nt/xxadj.
soon passing out of sight,
memory, or existence; quickly
fading or disappearing.
she never knew what that meant.
the soft thrumming of a fly woke her up but she stayed there, eyes glassy and fake.
she pulled her legs in, taking in a shaky breath as she recited the poem
she had heard her mother say one day.
"community.
it’s what i strive for.
community..
what there is now
is not what i fight for.
i never thought that visibility
would mean so much to us
that it would drive us away from
the cause we suffer to love.
we suffer to love
bc rewards dont mean a thing
not until our freedom is won
until all equality is achieved
you can throw me bouquets
chant my name and flair
but i pray to my siblings
they’d pull me out of there
distractions are temptations
to get lost in temporary pleasures
only to come back to reality after
i’ll start to forget the fading laughter."
she sighed, looking over into the entrance of the den where sunlight
streamed through. the lines of text meant something to her dearly,
a memory, perhaps? and just as her eyes closed shut for another
dream, something shot through her and she shivered. she was named
for her being, realization sang to her and she felt the weights being
lifted off of her small shoulders.
she was named evanescent because her mother had seen her future
already, such a beautiful word wouldve been thought to have a
much happier meaning. like a fire running out of fuel, she
thought, and her smile grew slowly, one of pure bliss.
"you were called evanescent because you will soon fade out with
no sadness, as all of it has slipped away. people will pick on you
but you cant listen to them because youre special. your name
has a meaning to break someones heart and yet, the potential
to bind it back up.
no one could forget you, the fine dame with a beautiful name,
whos shame all fled away because her joy was something that
could never leave. and people will think, evanescent, your
meaning on this world was not to fade yourself, oh no, but
to forget about the hardships.
to forget, you were ever sad."

"cant catch me!" a bright orange pup called out, running in circles around a
much younger child, a small tan beauty. the younger huffed, getting up and chasing
the other around with determination. evanescent watched quietly, her throat dry.
she grabbed the older pups scruff, picking them up and setting them down away
from the young one. "how about, a story?" she said softly, their faces
lighting up as they nodded enthusiastically. she smiled, beginning her tale.
"there once was a moon, as beautiful as can be, only the stars could fathom,
but the sun could not see. the sun so radiant, he burns so bright. the moon so
luminous, but only shows her face during the night. wounded and raged, the sun
cries and cries, so sad he hides from the skies hoping to see her. the days become
dark, because the sun will not shine. the waves crash so harsh on the shoreline
because there is a storm breaching on the inside. if the sun couldnt see the moon,
he would find another way to display his love. while the sun was thinking, the moon
was astray. you see, the moon loves the sun so much, that when he is away, she
chooses not to take a single breath, because not seeing him today, is a pain worse
than death. the sun can not see but he can hear, he can feel her soul and it soon
became clear. the sun would die each and every night to let his true love breathe,
for it would put an end to all her misery." she whispered the last sentence.
eyes drooping with sadness, the pups next to her snuggled into her pelt, eyes
shut with soft snores floating out of them. she hummed quietly, her eyes
fluttering closed as she, too, dreamed of the sun and the moon.
