Deep in the darkness of night, Orion stepped into the open expanse. Every summer for the past few years, he had made the journey to this very field until he had started to call it his home- though nothing could compare to his real home, The Night Sky. Even his color blindness couldn't hinder his enjoyment of this place, for he still believed in watching the distant lights that dotted the cloudless night above him.

As the sun set on the horizon and turned a darkening burnt orange, Orion’s eyes turned to look up at the sky above him. He swung his shoulder-bag over his back carefully, a slight smile showing on his muzzle as he walked; listening to the swish of the grass underneath his paws, the sound of birds settling in for the night, the songs of the crickets that were seeking for their other halves. Oh, how he wished he had someone to love instead of this resigned loneliness!

Absentmindedly, he began to hum a song to himself; before he knew it, he was singing it out loud. "In the dark and I’m right on the middle mark, I’m just in the tier of everything that rides below the surface. And I watch from a distance seventeen, and I’m short of the others dreams of being golden and on top. It’s not what you painted in my head, there’s so much there instead of all the colors that I saw." He paused as he swallowed, silently wishing to himself that he wasn't so color blind, that just for a day he could see the beauty masked to him in his own mind. He pushed that aside as he continued. "We all are living in a dream, but life ain’t what it seems. Oh everything’s a mess. And all these sorrows I have seen, they lead me to believe that everything’s a mess. But I wanna dream. I wanna dream.Leave me to dream... In the eyes of a teenage crystallized. Oh the prettiest of lights that hang the hallways of the home. And the cries from the strangers out at night they don’t keep us up at night. We have the curtains drawn and closed -" His song ended as he saw his favorite place to watch the stars, causing him to put on a burst of speed.

Eventually though Orion found the place he was looking for and nudged his bag off his shoulder with his nose and opened up the flap in search for his telescope. He found peace in watching the stars - watching how the expansive, endless universe changed ever so slowly each night. 13.7 billion years since the universe’s beginning, and it was still expanding. Chuckling to himself at the thought, he grabbed a notebook and leaned back into the soft grass. He'd always been fascinated by the stars that lit up the not really 'dark' world above and all around them. After all, his namesake was up there, immortalized in the glimmering stars- Orion the Hunter of Greek mythology, shining down on the world below.

After what seemed like only a few minutes, more and more stars from the galaxy they lived in came to life in the darkening night sky. A smile lit up his face as he watched the stars and peered through the telescope he'd brought with him. He set to work with yet another small sketch, flicking his ears and looking around him at the same time. This place was the best place to be - far away from any cities that emit light that swallowed the stars from his view.

As he looked around though something caught his attention- not the crickets in the field nor the light of nearby fireflies. No, this was something else. Eyes widening, he looked up at the night sky, watching as numerous lights shot across the blackness. Orion's jaw dropped in awe; he put his paw over his mouth and giggled to himself. He couldn't believe his luck. A meteor shower! He hadn't seen one in ages!

Many had said if you saw even a singular shooting star that you could make a wish, and if you were lucky enough, it might even come true one day. His pale eyes looked around him as he listened to the crickets love songs in the field- it made him get butterflies in his stomach as he thought about having someone to love himself; someone to be by his side and so he wouldn't be so alone. Closing his eyes he swallowed nervously and silently wished on the sky above: If there's anybody out there for me - I one day hope to be able to find you.
