i lay awake, my fur rose as the air cooled around me. it's midnight. i thought, staring up into the starry sky.

it was so big, so vast. so beautiful. each individual star sparkled brightly in its own transfixed place. i felt at peace, in the cold, dewy midnight grass, laying upon a hill. crickets quietly chirped around me, an owl hooing.

the forest that surrounded the hill was dark, unwelcoming and mysterious. i didn't want to move, i didn't want to leave. some nighttime bugs buzzed around me, and the moon's light shown coldly upon my face. i felt something here. i wasn't sure what. i took a glance to the dark treeline, seeing pinpricks of animal eyes glowing eerily. they reminded me of stars, glowing softly, reflecting in the dim moonlight, promising me death if i decided to venture in.

even in this planet, racing through space at hundreds of miles per hour, filled with all kinds of creatures, organisms, minerals, chemicals and who knows what else, in a galaxy filled with billions of stars in a universe we don't even know that much about, i felt so alone, so insignificant in comparison to all these stars with their own invisible solar systems and their own possible life forms.

i felt so happy to belong to something so vast and deep, filled with so many different things. i was happy to know my place in this universe, to matter in a cold, harsh reality.

then it came to me. i was never meant to know this, to be aware of this, to know what and where and why and how i am existing. i was meant to live my insignificant and short life here , to fill it with experiences and thoughts and opinions, emotions, only to have that all disappear when i die. all of these thoughts made my head hurt, blood rushing up to my head. goosebumps welled upon my skin, my fur standing on end. i shivered.

without realizing, tears ran down my cheeks, my fur becoming wet.
i sat up, feeling so, so cold. i sobbed, looking up into the dark, velvety midnight sky, so cold and deep, so alive, but dead at the same time.

i felt so small, but so happy. tears kept rolling down. they didn't stop, and i finally stood up. they dripped down so quickly, like oil. my face shown brighter in the night, my fur sparkling with tears. i stood there for a moment, looking down at myself, seeing the solid, warm, beating body that my soul resided in. i could feel my heart beating, bringing and sustaining my mortal life.

i didn't remember anything from my previous life. i felt that i should know, i should find out. i should fill myself with as much as i could, to try and remember before everything vanishes away.

i shivered, and began to walk slowly into the forest. to the places i was meant to visit and see, to return to my home.
