1. First Encounter

Postby mooncakes » Sat Jun 20, 2015 3:38 pm

The fields around the pasture were tinted with brown. death. The rays of the sun began to peck at my eyes, and, irritated, I began to squint before looking away. A jet black figure approached submissively, his hooves stepping cautiously around. I looked over and saw the rather large, but gentle stallion, Andy. Though he was blind, he was actually a nice horse to go on a leisurely walk with. He was incredibly insecure about his surroundings, and had quickly grown dependent and attached to me when he first arrived to the ranch. I smiled softly as he slowly stuck his head out and over the wooden fence of the pasture. I gently touched his snout and stroked his face. He made a soft chirp, and I then decided to take him out. The summer heat was unbearable, but I hadn't exercised Andy in awhile. It'd be nice to take him out for once.

After a slow walk into the barn, Andy was all tacked up and ready to go. He seemed rather unsure, but who could blame him? After mounting him and giving him reassuring statements, he was pacified for now. I gave him a gentle nudge, and at that moment, his ears flattened. I knew he had anxiety, which actually gave me slight anxiety. It took longer than usual to lead him out of the barn, but he trusted me. Deeply. He depended on me, and he knew I'd keep him safe. I looked at the small between his withers. It had been from his previous owner, who had Andy and his brother in captivity. Andy himself had been beaten several times, and finally attacked with a steak knife. I grimaced, and kept walking before leading him into a forest.

Andy and I had been walking for about twenty-five minutes before we saw a massive stallion in a sparser area of the forest, grazing. I halted Andy and scratched behind his ear softly. The stallion's muscles were rippling under his black and white coat, and he had a symbol on the inside of his left leg. I squinted, BVB? As I continued to scan his body, I detected a brand on his neck. I grew more curious by the second. Finally, I decided to dismount Andy. The black and white tobiano was several yards away. I then tied Andy up to a nearby tree, and I hoped this encounter would be quick. Andy would feel isolated and terrified. I could tell he was already getting nervous, he had begun to paw the ground.

I was wearing heavy, black, knee-high boots. Unfortunately, they made a large amount of noise. The wild stallion immediately turned and looked at me, his crimson eyes fixed right into mine. I stared right back, but blinked quickly. "Shh, it's okay," I whispered. The stallion only stared at me, but I could see his body trembling. Not in fear, but ready to lash out if need-be. I could tell he wasn't scared. He snorted a brief warning, and I could hear a quiet nicker from Andy. I began to grow anxious for him. I then looked at the brand, and I furrowed my brows. Could I potentially bring this wild boy home? I slowly and patiently opened my bag, which was a small messenger bag hanging over my shoulder. I had a small apple, a bottle of water, and a sketchbook. Oh, and pencils, of course. The stallion across from me only continued to stare, and I could feel him staring right into me. I had to admit, I was rather intimidated. The stallion stood at about 15hh, tall for a tolter. Andy gave another scared cry, but it was only a notch louder. I felt bad for him, but I wanted to tame this stallion. I grabbed the apple that was originally for Andy out of the bag and slowly reached out, the red fruit in hand. The tobiano only stared at the apple, skeptical. His nostrils flared, and he exhaled. I could feel his hot breath on my wrist, and it sent odd shivers down my spine.

Finally, after me being silent and Andy continuously giving soft murmurs, the tobiano nudged the apple. I flinched, and I could tell he sensed it. However, he stepped closer and then finally grabbed the apple from my hand. Though he continued to eat it, his ears were tilted in my direction. He was waiting for me to backstab him. I only slowly lowered my hand, and I began to take slow steps backwards. The tobiano continued to watch me, curious, but with a high guard. I whispered softly to Andy who was shivering with anxiety and fear. The tobiano remained stationary, and he took a step closer as I mounted Andy once more. I made Andy take a step backwards, the tobiano taking another step towards us. Without hesitation, I gave Andy a nudge and we were off for home. I didn't expect the tobiano to follow.

I hadn't seen the wild stallion all night, but in the morning, he was by the pasture nickering to the mares. I smiled faintly, and I noticed Andy alone, lying under one of the trees quietly. The tobiano perked his ears when I opened the door to my small home. He looked in my direction, skeptical once more. I slowly walked back inside, leaving the door open and then grabbing two apples. I then exited my home, slowly making my way towards the stallion. His entire body was now facing me, and his crimson eyes were giving me the death stare again. I was unsure, but I approached him one more time, holding the biggest apple of the two out. It took a minute or two for him to grab it, but it took less time than the first time I fed him.

He brayed, and the mares perked their ears. I reached a hand out to him, and he flattened his ears, but grew tolerant. I gently scratched behind his ears, and his ears flipped back up to normality. I made clicking sounds, trying to get him to follow me. Surprisingly, he did. But it was likely because of the one apple I had. I led him into the pasture where three mares and Andy resided. The other tolters were in the stables. The tobiano followed, but he kept a close eye on me. It was a miracle he let me touch him.

After that, I closed him in the pasture, praying he and Andy wouldn't get into any trouble. But nonetheless, I had captured the stallion with ease. What would his name be? I recalled the 'BVB' sign on his leg, and I immediately thought of 'Black Veil Brides.' After all, I listened to their music... This made sense. I would, from now on, call him Veil.

    Welcome home, Veil.

2. Adjusting To The New Home

Veil stiffened and snorted in an aggressive manner when I locked the gate behind him. I could feel that same old red gaze I felt before, his eyes staring into my soul. It made me nervous. I didn't trust him, and I could tell he didn't trust me either. It was easy for me to determine that this was just a matter of feigning kindness. Perhaps to impress the other mares in the pasture? From the corner of my eye, I saw Andy lower his head, and he remained where he was, confused as to where Veil was. He was highly unsure of this newcomer. To be honest, I was, too.

A couple hours passed, and I decided to walk back out to socialize with Veil. He was busy impressing his new mares. Well, he thought they were his. He kept nudging them and brushing up against them. Luckily it wasn't really... their time. Veil saw me from across the pasture and just nickered. He was annoyed. He made it obvious. I sighed softly and climbed over the fence. It was about five o'clock now, P.M.. From my perspective, he seemed to be getting along just fine. Though I had a feeling that he only felt more comfortable than I anticipated because he saw other horses that were completely fine. I was a little surprised he didn't snap at Andy or anything.

After some time, Veil's extreme interest in getting to know the mares began to die down. He soon began to sniff around, his shoulders shuddering as he did so. His tail would swish every now and then, and he'd pause several times. Was he starting to get skeptical? As I zoned out, I was pulled back into reality when I heard a powerful WAM against the boards of the fence. The horizontal, fragile planks were most definitely incapable of holding a full-grown stallion's kicks off. I furrowed my brows. This stallion didn't like captivity, but then again, what wild animal would?

I jogged to the other side, nearly stumbling as I did so. I heard a slight crack in the wood, and I stopped about a yard away. "Shh, shh!" I whispered loudly. Veil didn't pay any attention to me, but I knew he acknowledge the sounds I made and my presence. His ears were cocked towards me, and I sighed, knowing I at least had the faintest of his attention. "Stop it," I said quietly. I pulled out a whip. I never used the whip on animals, only to manipulate them. I hoped this boy was scared of whips. As Veil was ready to lash his legs out once more, I cracked the whip in the air. Instantly, the large stallion whipped around. He flattened his ears, backing up a bit, then turned away as if nothing happened. After this, he began to inspect the pasture further.

I was left there, puzzled. Why did he react so quickly then disappear just as so? It was hard for me to decipher his personality. The other mares and Andy I had easily figured out. I scratched my head, stashing the whip as far into my rather large pockets as possible.
