First Encounter

I looked at the ponies that the woman I had met said were for sale. I walked around the pen, interacting with each of them. None them had really taken much of a liking to me or just ignored me completely; too engrossed in their hay. I looked over and saw a lone mare standing in a separate pen. "What about her?" I asked the women. "She's for sale, but I don't really recommend her." she said. "Why not?" I asked, confused. "She has quite the attitude. If she doesn't like you, she won't give you an ounce of her attention. Even if you do get her attention then, she could get nippy." I frowned and looked back to the mare who looked curiously back at me. I smiled slightly and she tilted her head. "How is she when being ridden?" I asked. "Well, she hasn't been ridden before. So not experienced at all." she said. I walked over to the mare's pen and leaned on the fence. She looked at me curiously, watching my every move. I reached out my hand. The mare walked slowly towards it and laid her nose into my palm. I smiled real wide. "I'll buy her." I stated. "What? Really?" I nodded. "How much?" I asked, my eyes not leaving the mare. "$700." she said. I the money from my pocket. I usually paid in cash when buying horses. I handed the nice woman the money then went to get my truck. The little mare watched with interest. I backed the truck and trailer towards the pen as the woman opened the gate. I hopped out and went to my new mare. "I think I'll name you Desiree." I said, patting her neck. She nickered in contentment. I ushered her into the trailer, which she was a little reluctant to go into. After making sure she was safely inside, I shut the door and hopped in my truck. I drove towards my stables and her new home.

Adjusting to the New Home

I watched the little mare as she trotted around the paddock, seeing everything there was to see. She seemed kind of jumpy when she first arrived and didn't eat or drink much. She also had a little trouble with sleeping and would often wake me up in the night with her whinnies. Two days passed and now here she is, adjusting just fine. She began eating more, a lot actually, and began drinking regularly. Her sleeping became more frequent and she would even doze off while I was grooming her.

I heard a whinny from the pasture that brought me back from my thoughts. Desiree was standing by the fence watching me. I smiled and walked over to her. I scratched behind her ears and she leaned into my hand, wanting more. I chuckled. Pulling a peppermint from my pocket, I laid my hand out flat. Desiree graciously took the treat. She nickered softly and I pat her neck. "You're having good progress, Desi." I said softly. "Keep it up girl." I smiled.

Introduction of the Halter

"Desi, come on!" I urged as the mare hopped away from me. A halter was gripped in my hands and I had been trying to get Desiree to wear for an hour now. I sat down on the ground with a frustrated sigh. Desiree turned her head and looked at me, confused. She trotted over and lowered her head. I pat her neck. "Oh, Desi. You're a tough one." I smiled.

An idea popped into my head. I stood up and brushed myself off. Pulling a peppermint from my pocket, I held it behind the halter. To get to the treat, Desiree would have to reach through the halter. The young mare tilted her head in confusion. She took a step closer, then another. She wanted the treat but not the halter. She stuck her head into the halter and grabbed the treat. I gently clipped the halter around her head. She realized that it wasn't that bad and happily chewed her peppermint. I stroked her neck. "Good girl!" I praised.
