A Desert Miracle

Parra's name: Dune
Parra's gender: Female
Story:
The heat deprived parra rose above yet another sand dune, heat pounded her reddish hair that so elegantly fell into her eyes with every swaying step, Dune staggered and collapsed onto the burning sand. Drink the water, the thoughts circled in her mind, "I can't, hhhhh." the parra let out a raspy breath. Do it, or you'll die, Ren can go without water for a long time... she knew she had to drink water. Dune looked up at the camel towering over her, the camel so called "Ren" moved closer and a wave of relief fell over Dune as she rested in his shade. The sandy colored camel slumped down beside her. The parra flexed her wings, they still felt numb and she was too tired to fly, she reached up and unfastened the brown leather canteen - now lighter in color from the sun's rays - from the tan camel's back. Dune screwed off the cap that sealed the precious water and then poured the colorless liquid down her coarse throat. The parra gulped greedily until the last drop fell into her mouth. That was the last of her supply of her water.
"I can't believe we've gotten lost in this horrid wasteland, I've been following the route for years!" Dune scowled, then shook her head steadily "and now I'm talking to this dumb camel." Ren flicked his ear, appearently unaware of what she had said. Dune laid back and closed her eyes and fell into a sudden darkness.
Dune awoke slowly, unaware of what happened. There was a strange raging sound, and she felt a heavy weight on her chest, Dune squinted, there was something wrong. She opened her mouth to call for Ren but was shocked when sand flew into her gaping mouth. The oblivious parra spewed it out and opened her eyes, sand whipped in front of her, back and forth; with raging winds, swirling masses of sudden death. It was a sandstorm. Dune looked down to see she was covered in sand, she dug her way but felt sore and cold from the sand that worked its way around her body like someone took a giant sheet and sand paper and gave her a good rub with it. She searched the horizon for Ren, there! She spotted him, but something was off, Dune scuttled toward the shadow which started to move. Startled, Dune stepped backward to see the shape was changing, it became a more, human figure. It stepped forward, now she could see the elegant details of it's face.
The figure smiled at her and appeared to be licking its fingers, though it was unclear in the raging storm. "A fine fellow that dear camel was... a shame he went so soon." The smile spread across it's face, which became a menacing grin. "What have you done?" Dune pouted in rage, on the inside it sounded like a roar but it came out as a tiny squeal. Dune looked up with tears in her eyes and spotted a strange glinting scarf loosely draped around his shoulders. It was then she spotted the strange marking etched into his forehead that glowed with power. A shapeshifter. She thought. "Ahh, well, times-a-ticking and, so will be yours." The stranger vanished with the sand, leaving behind the arcane scarf.
Dune stumbled toward they cloth and tied it around her face to yield from the racing sand. "Your smarter then I thought," the strange voice boomed around her "Let's see how smart you really are." Suddenly in front of her she saw Ren laying on the ground, he was dead, agony weld up inside her and her head started pounding. Next to him lay a single blade, though there were no cuts on Ren in sign that it was used. "Think fast!" The voice shredded her ears and the sand around her started pounding on her with a great amount of force and a sudden coldness fell upon the desert. Quick! she thought, Grab the knife fool! Dune reached for the silver blade as quickly as her weak arms let her against pounding sand. She sliced the glinting blade through the stomach of the camel, quickly pulling out all the organs. Strangely, there was no blood.
Dune crawled in, closing the rip she had made, she new the camels body would protect her and keep her warm. She unraveled the soft velvet scarf that was wrapped around her head. The exhausted parra folded the scarf like a pillow, and laid down to rest. Just before she closed her eyes she caught the glinting of her bracelet. Oh how closely it resembles the scarf... she thought, the words swirling in her head, and then, dozed off.
. . .

Dune lifted her dear head as the sunlight peaked through the cut she had made just the night before, the storm seemed to be over. She crawled out from her shelter, removing the scarf from where it was and fastened it around her neck. The parra -now well rested- unfastened a travel pack from the camel's back along with her empty canteen. She peered into the distance to see as to where to head. "Is that a..." Dune stammered, "An oasis?" Dune spread her wings to get ready to fly and in two leaping bounds she flew into the air. Dune knew that in the presence of a shapeshifter major wounds would be healed, so her wing had healed and she was flying with her hearts content. Dune loved to fly, infact she did three barrel rolls to celebrate her good fortune. Dune didn't hesitate but she did bite her lip in hopes her eyes weren't playing tricks. But yes indeed, it was an oasis. The relieved parrapup dove into the water's cold welcoming arms. She drank as much water as she could and then filled up her canteen. Something was familiar though. She knew this place.
"This is part of the route! No wonder it's familiar!" exclaimed Dune, "I'll be back to the train station soon!" and like a rocket Dune shot out of the crystal water. Racing the wind and the desert heat. She was almost home, and she knew it.

So How Did We Meet ?

Dry desert dust clung to my eyelashes as I squinted through the bright sun. The pale, never-ending sand set aglow with blinding rays. I kept my head down, praying I would come across some type of water source soon. My mouth was dry and I was parched and dehydrated. I knew I couldn't go on like this much longer. Idiotically, I had wandered away from the tour party in this unknown, vast land and became lost amongst the uncharitable and unrecognizable territory. I had been wandering for a while now, I could feel my feet burning from the hot ground and my lips dry and cracking like the desert ground I walked upon. I could feel my knees wanting to collapse into each other. All hope of finding my way back had disappeared into the dusty, pale dunes. I fell to the ground with my knees sinking into the grains of sand, coughing at the dust that fluttered up from my fall confusion fell over me once I had finally looked up. I stared in awe at at the silhouette of a beautiful beast that stood before me a short distance off. I reached my hand out hoping it would come to me. I must be imagining things… I had been told the desert could do that to you. The creature shifted the wings on its back and walked towards me. The way it walked, it held itself like royalty. So majestic it outshone even the bright desert sun. As she came closer I could see patterns along her furry and feathery body. My dry hand gently slid across her smooth beak and my green eyes stared into her bright yellow ones. My heart was racing, I was petrified of this large animal that stood before me. Slowly I moved my hand onto its soft fur and felt the silky fluff under my hand and between my dry fingers. She kept herself well groomed, very little dust was entangled in her fur and I could see how smooth her feathers were. My eyes were tired and not even my fear could keep me stable. My dehydrated body fell over. I remember hitting the hot sand and everything going black.

I blinked my eyes open, feeling them burn at the blistering light of the sun's rays. I rolled over suddenly bewildered as I grew to realize the surface beneath me wasn't sand. The rough texture of tumbleweeds and dry plants scratched at my skin as I rolled over to look at it and get a better view. I soon realized upon closer inspection that the plants were made into the shape of a bed beneath me. As my senses slowly returned, I noticed the lack of pain in my mouth; I was no longer dying of thirst. I felt okay again. I tried to look to the sky but realized it was partially blocked. A small crevice in a cliff that was decorated and protected with dry plants obscured my view. I remembered losing consciousness...how on earth did I get to this strange safe haven? My eyes flickered back and forth scanning the room for some sort of a clue. I froze in fear the moment I saw it- I remembered now. Maybe I hadn't been dreaming when I first saw that beautiful creature. Dancing above my head in the clear blue sky was the regal animal I had seen earlier. So high up I could almost mistake it for a normal bird, but I knew better. She swooped and soared in motions unlike any I had ever seen. Suddenly she dove towards the ground landing delicately. I noticed a tribal painted gourd in her mouth as she stepped towards me. Gently she placed the container in front of me and I moved my eyes to see what was in it. My face lit up again when I saw the clear liquid ripple and shimmer inside the gourd. Water! My senses were blurred by excitement as I picked it up and brought it to my lips drinking the cool liquid. I could have been drinking liquid gold it was such a luxury. I had never been so ecstatic to have water before in my life. Once my thirst was quenched I slowly opened my eyes and placed the gourd on the ground. I studied her; everything about her was alien to me. Small droplets of water clung to her fur like dew to the grass in the morning. Oh how I longed for wet grass under my feet and not this painful sand. I then began to wonder how water could be on her fur. The desert was as dry as bones not a drop of water could be seen for miles. How was it that this majestic girl was enveloped in water?

I noticed the water evaporating off her already. The sun was so hot I was thankful for the shade I had been given. Water droplets sprayed me throughly and I looked up to see her shaking what was left of the dew off her body. She bent over picking the gourd up in her beak and turning from me. With a few elegant strides she spread her wings and took off again flying up high. My jaw dropped open. How could such a beautiful creature he here with me; taking care of me in such a gentle, kind manner? I suppose there were some perks to getting lost in this dry dead land. My green eyes stayed on her as she swooped and dove, spinning around in the blue sky so high up I wondered how she got so high in such a short time. I watched her dance in the sky as if she was a dandelion seed caught in the wind. It was so elegant and beautiful she moved so effortlessly through the sky with her beautifully strong wings, I had never been so mesmerized. I flinched as she dove to the sound again landing with her two front paws first before having all four feet on the ground again. She stepped towards me again the gourd in her mouth wet and once more filled with precious water. I looked up at her, her fur was glazed with water as droplets clung to her silky fur.

My eyes widened as I realized what she was doing. “You dance in the sky to collect water don’t you.” She tilted her head and looked up at me not understanding my words. “Thats why you always fly up there...there is not water in this desert you have to find your own. Thats so cool!” I exclaimed stroking her silky fur. “You saved my life you know.” I said gently petting her face. I placed the water next to me and continues to pet her. “I need to get home though…” I said sadly. I hated this whole vacation. I hated the deseret...but now I was starting to love it. It wasnt so bad after all. I got to my feet and stepped towards her. She seemed scared but I think she was used to humans. I bet she saved the ones who got lost here. She was a sky dancing life saver and I felt lucky to have been lost here; almost as if it were an honor.

Suddenly she moved quickly and with one swift move, she tossed me onto her back. I wrapped my arms around her neck, terrified. She shifted her wings under me and I fell onto her back as she spread them widely. They were gorgeous, everything about her was radiant. In this desert land filled with nothing but dead plants a few creepy reptiles I found a gem. A friend. She took to the sky flying low but quickly. I was shaking with fear but it was so beautiful I almost didn’t mind. So gracefully she flew I felt so free and invincible, nothing could hurt me when I was with her. Within minutes I found the tour party. I had been lost for a whole day and they had given up hope of finding me. I almost didn’t want to go back…

She landed far away so she wouldn’t be seen and let me get off. “Wait,” I said as she turned to leave. “Don’t go...I don’t want to go back.” She turning towards me and pushes her head into my chest nuzzling into me. I wrapped my arms around her. “Let me stay there is nothing for me back there. I want to stay.” She seemed surprised, like she didn’t understand. I suppose most people were afraid of her and ran away the second they could. But I wanted to be her friend. I wanted to stay here with her forever, this beautiful creature who saved lives by dancing in the sky. I wanted to stay here, and that’s exactly what I would do.

The desert wasn't so bad after all.

Parra's name: Sage
Parra's gender: Female
Story (max 2000 words limit):
Sage's Quest or i guess story began when she was small. A small Parapup she was, but that didnt stop her adventuring and daredevil personality inside her. This was an issue, she'd always ended up hanging from a tree or running from a predator. The wings didnt keep her out of trouble either. She was beyond curious and wanted to see everything, including , a lava pit, a volcano exploding , a ancient egyptian ruin (cursed) , a vampire, and many more. of course she didn't get to see any of them until, she wondered off onto one of her daily adventures. At this point she wasn't as young and was totally into steam punk! She wore steam punk everything, she liked this style. Ugh her thoughts get pushed around alot, back to the story,. She was wondering through the plains , then something hit her, she got wobbly and fell over. She had passed out. When she awoke she was in the middle of , No where? No, it was a desert! "More exploring she thought" not thinking of the travel home fact. she was lost but she didnt seem to care since lost was her main domain. luckily she had brought an ipad with some songs to listen to while walking, hmmmm what did she listen to? She likes classic rockand a little bit of pop! as she was walking she saw an oasis! she was kind of hungry and thirsty so she took a short stop there, then worry filled her up, shed noticed that she didnt walk to the desert and that she was far far FAR from home!
