nickname. He goes

Bottlecap is a very excited boy. He always has something interesting and
super creative going on in that little bean brain of his. There's almost nothing
that won't catch his attention, and he'll try anything once! He's not much of
a talker, though, when you meet him at first. He'll be quiet around you for
a while, but once he decided you're okay, then he's a bubbling blue ball of
energy! He will befriend almost anyone, it just takes a while.

Why is Desmond not called by his birth name very often? Well, when he was just a new hatchling, his parents noticed something strange. When they would wake up in the morning, they would find that all the bottle caps had gone missing from the fridge, and the full soda bottles were left, open, in the fridge to go flat. They were puzzled for a while, but then one day, when their son just began to talk, he told Tora, "Come on, mommy! Toys!" And led her to the couch, where he had stashed all the stolen bottle caps! She tried to scold him, but just look at that little face! Their response was to move the bottles higher up in the fridge, so he couldn't reach them, then just give them to him when they were done with the soda. He eventually got a nice little hoard going, and when he moved them to his room, he really didn't know where to put them, what to do with them. He went and ventured the house, in that quiet way that he was when he thought, and found two tubes of superglue. Desmond proceeded to apply the glue to the bottlecaps, and cover half of his lampshade before he ran out of glue... and fingers that could move. A few days later, his family took a trip to visit his aunt Edie and uncle Jean, where he first learned of Jean's welding. He shyly asked if he could see, and watched with amazed eyes and gaping jaw as his uncle showed him the art, then, hesitantly, let Cappie give it a try. When the boy showed responsibility and wonderment at the magic that was happening before his deep gray eyes, he decided to get him his own little welding kit. From then on, Desmond was hooked! Nowadays, it's a very rare sight to see him without his caps, so everyone just calls him Bottlecap, or Cappie. He welcomes the nicknames, it's just who he is.
