"Now, close your eyes, and listen. What do you hear?" The fortune teller purred. The customer closed his eyes and started rambling, and a smirk spread across Malaha's face. As she tried to keep her fortune telling cards from falling, the sneaky Plumerian reached around the table and pulled the poor customer's wallet out. Less than a second after Malaha had tucked the leather wallet into her bag, the customer opened his eyes. "Very good," Malaha said in a soft tone, even though she wasn't paying attention to him in the slightest. "You need'nt pay," she said, nearly breaking her act as he reached for where his wallet once rested. "Seeing such a wonderful future is payment enough." The customer nodded and thanked Malaha, as he stood up to leave. "Poor sap," Malaha whispered under her breath with a smirk as he walked away...

Mahala Leonora Funar
"Funar" is a traditional Romani last name meaning
"rope maker"

PERSONALITY:
Mahala is what you would call a 'free bird', meaning she feels she is completely free to go where the wind takes her. She never stays in one place long enough to set down roots. Usually, she's in town just long enough to scam a couple unsuspecting Plumerians, and then she's gone again. Being the deceitful nomad she is, there is a constant air of mystery that follows her. Who is this strange, exotic, girl?

Mahala uses her persuasive, charismatic personality and sultry good looks to lure in her victims; these traits often allow her to worm her way into their homes, or to trick them into getting their fortune told. Mahala's rebellious lifestyle comes with a lot of risks she happily takes. More than once she's gotten herself out of a sticky situation with her quick-thinking and charismatic personality. Mahala is a freeloader if you ever saw one. She hardly works for anything, taking from other hard-working Plumerians to get what she wants. She is very inconsiderate, not caring in the slightest how her actions could affect the lives of those she scams.

Image
HABITS AND TALENTS:
Dancing
Mahala is an experienced belly dancer. Having learned from her mother, she is often found dancing around her caravan when she thinks no one is around. Without even noticing that she's doing it at first, she'll start with the traditional footwork her mother taught her, and slowly she'll work herself into a full on dance session, twirling around her campground until she's either too tired to keep going, or laughs until she's out of breath.

Playing the tambourine
Unlike her dancing, the tambourine playing was something she learned from her father, as he was the musician of the family. He had a large multitude of instruments, though the only one Mahala was really drawn to was the tambourine. The fact that she could play it while dancing was probably why she found it so appealing.

Slight-of-hand and pick-pocketing
Being the accomplished thief she is, Mahala prides herself in her slight-of-hand. Being able to easily take things off unsuspecting victims makes her carefree life of thievery possible.

Surprisingly good with tools and mechanics
Considering how old her truck is, it's a miracle it's still running. This miracle is owed to her natural talent with tools and mechanics. Whenever something breaks, she knows just how to fix it. And just how to steal the required parts.

Braiding her hair
This is a habit that she's not entirely aware of. While she's planning a scam, she often finds her fingers playing with her hair, braiding it as the plan formulates. She often leaves the braid in her hair for a while afterward, as she either forgets about it, or just doesn't care to take it out.

Image

LIFESTYLE:
Nomadic. She moves constantly. She lives in a romani caravan she inherited from her parents, though instead of horses, her old red pickup truck pulls it. She loves her life of travel and freedom, though she does get lonely, and misses the companionship of her troupe.

Image
INSIDE THE CARAVAN:
The caravan that Mahala calls home is very... cramped. And messy. Every cupboard and drawer is overflowing with stuff that she's "collected" over the years. There are pillows and scarves and shawls all over the place. It is also very colourful, with tons of bright reds, lime greens, hot pinks and dark blues; neutral colours don't seem to have much of a place inside this almost eye-burning brightness. There is a very distinct smell of cinnamon and cloves that clings to everything, including Mahala herself.

OCCUPATION:
She's a failing fortune teller, so she mostly has to steal what she needs. Mahala extremely enjoys the story telling and deceiving part of her job, the way she can get the trust of others and manipulate it. She loves her job, it allows her to stay mobile with no real commitments, something she treasures .

ACCESSORIES:
Head scarf and head piece.
This head scarf holds a special meaning for her; this scarf is the one she was nearly caught stealing the day she was separated from her family.

Multitude of necklaces, bracelets and rings
Some of these were given to her by her mother, others are things she has stolen off of unsuspecting victims. Others still she bought using the cash she'd gotten through pick-pocketing and scamming; it is Romani tradition to convert cash into jewelry as you can then keep your wealth on your person. This makes it harder for them to be robbed, as the caravans aren't the most secure of places

A jade pinkie ring
This ring was given to her by her mother and she wears it always. The jade, her mother told her, warded off evil spirits

THE SEPARATION:
Just one more hit, Mahala thought to herself as she scoped out her new target. It was getting late, and she knew her caravan’s rule about not being there for the departure; ‘If you’re not with us, you get left behind.’ It was a refrain that she’d been hearing her entire life, a grim reality for the group. But this dim-witted shop keeper had left these beautiful scarves out on a rack all by themselves, just ripe for the taking. Taking a quick glance around, she walked over to the rack, looking the scarves over. Her eyes stopped on a bright red scarf, and she instantly knew this was the one so was going to take. As she was stuffing the scarf into her purse, the shop owner came out of the shop. As soon as she made eye contact with the shop keeper, Mahala knew she’d been caught. Flashing a quick smile at the keeper, she made a run for it. “Thief! Thief!” she heard the man from the shop yell after her.

Mahala turned the first corner she came to, and kept running. She couldn’t be caught now, not with her bag full of stolen items. She’d started to make her way back to where her caravan had set up camp before she thought better of it. Yes Mahala, lead them to your family of thieves. Great move. She turned away from her camp, scanning her surroundings for a hideout. She spotted a building that looked abandoned, and using the old rusted fire escape and a dumpster, scaled up to the broken second story window and climbed through. Just as she hit the floor under the window, she heard yelling at the end of the street; she stayed down, not risking being spotted. After the noise has died down, she let out a breath she hadn't noticed she'd been holding. Relaxing against the wall behind her, Mahala thought if wouldn't be safe her her to leave quite yet. But it was getting late; the sun was starting to sink below the horizon. The caravan wasn’t due to move out until the morning; she’d hide out here until the sun had set, and then make her way back to camp in the cover of darkness. She sighed, her eyes slipping closed as she prepared to wait...

After what seemed like only minutes later, Mahala blinked open her eyes to light streaming in through the broken window. She sat up and stretched, taking in her surroundings. It was very bright in here for early morning… She looked out the window, and to her absolute horror, the sun was high in the sky. Oh no. Oooooh no. No, no, no, no, no! Mahala could feel herself beginning to panic as she climbed back out of the abandoned building.

She made a mad dash toward her caravan’s camp, carefully avoiding the street with the market and shops she’d robbed. She came to the clearing outside the town where her Romani troupe had made camp to find it nearly completely abandoned. Left behind was one of the smaller caravans, and a rusted, old, red pickup truck. Mahala blinked in absolute shock. She knew the rule, it had been burned into her brain, but she’d never believed they’d ever actually follow through on it… 17 years old, and she was completely on her own.

FUJI:
Mahala smirked to herself as she walked through the zoo, the location for today’s scam. She peeked into her leather over-the-shoulder bag at her haul from the day. A nice new opal ring from the lady with the music note tattoo on her wrist, a worn out leather wallet from the man in the cargo shorts and sunglasses which she hadn’t opened yet, and a package of yellow lemon candies that had
Image
been poking out of the purse of the woman who wouldn’t stop talking among other things.

She nonchalantly popped one of the lemon candies in her mouth as she made her way towards the exit of the zoo. She passed the leopard enclosure, the reptile house, the monkey enclosure, as well as the elephants and peacocks on her way out. She waved to the young man working at the admissions gate as she walked out, the bangles on her wrist jingling. It was then she felt something move against her hip in her purse. Mahala resisted the urge to look in her purse right then. Instead, as she lowered her hand from the wave, she gripped the top of her purse shut tightly. She flashed the admissions guy a quick smile before making her way out of sight.

Her camp site wasn’t far from the zoo, which was one of the reasons she’d chosen to prey on the zoo’s visitors. Once out of sight, she rushed to her caravan, and climbed inside. Only then did she dare to rip open her purse. As soon as it was open, a streak of grey-white fur leaped out at her, and dove under a pile of pillows on her bed. Mahala stared after it for a few moments before moving over to move aside the pillow. Curled up underneath, was a silvery marmoset, no larger than her hand. Laughing, she addressed the monkey; “Why hello there, little one! What did you think you were doing, hiding in my purse, hm? …. Well, I can’t exactly bring you back now, can I? Guess I’ll just have to keep you!” Mahala laughed again. Like she would ever return anything she stole, whether she knew she was stealing it or not. “You’re quite the little escape artist aren’t you?” She held out her hand to the marmoset, who reached out to touch her with his tiny hands. “Welcome to your new home, little Fuji.”*

*"Fuji" means "escape" in Romanian

RELATIONSHIPS:
Fuji and Mahala;
Fuji is Mahala's confidant, her best friend, and her partner in crime. The little monkey is the only one she feels comfortable telling her secrets to, mainly because she knows the marmoset can't tell them to anyone, even if he wanted to. Ever since Fuji escaped the zoo by hiding out in her purse, the two became nearly inseparable. Fuji is a very bright little monkey, and learned quickly (with Mahala's help) how to help Mahala in her scams, either by stealing things himself, or by distracting the victim while Mahala did the stealing. Mahala has come to rely heavily on this little monkey's sense of character; several times he has warned her that the people she was trying to scam weren't gullible enough to fall for her tricks. After the first few times ignoring the monkey's protests and getting caught in her scams, Mahala learned to trust her partner and always tries to get his okay before moving in on a victim.

By rycia
Mahala and Deimos;
Deimos is one of Mahala's favourite victims. The first time they met, Deimos came to her for a reading. After a signal from Fuji, Mahala knew that he was gullible enough to fall for her tricks. So Mahala went to read his fortune, and so the act began. Mahala convinced Deimos that someone had placed a dark curse on him, and that evil spirits followed and tormented him daily. Already having his superstitions, Deimos believed Mahala. She told him that she could ward off these evil spirits for a while, but that he would have to continue coming back to her to keep them away. An end to the torments, all for a small fee.

Esther and Mahala;
Esther and Mahala's relationship is an unusual one for Mahala. As per usual, it started out with Mahala trying to scam her. But no matter what she tried, Esther somehow managed to spoil her plans. Normally, Mahala would give up and move on, but there was something about Esther... she seemed to actually care about Mahala. Maybe that was why none of her scams ever worked; because she didn't want them too. Esther knows about Mahala's stealing and scamming, and scolds her for it every time. To appease Esther after witnessing a theft, Mahala will treat her to a bubble tea, or maybe a movie, (despite thoroughly disliking the movies) depending on how good the score was.

SUPERSTITIONS:
Image
By PaintedSun
Mahala is a very superstitious person; many of these beliefs were passed down to her from her Romani heritage. While some superstitions she disregards as foolishness, there are many her mother taught her that have stuck with her. One of these being the belief in spirits. Mahala believes that there are spirits, good and bad, around us at all times. The Jade pinkie ring she wears is supposed to help ward off these evil spirits, and keep them from causing her misfortune. She also believes black cats to be lucky, and that seeing a pair of crows is an omen for joy to come. She also believes major changes in the weather comes with the quarter moon, so depending on how the weather has been, she either eagerly awaits, or dreads, the coming of the quarter moon. However, she doesn't believe in curses, only using them as scams. Bit odd, isn't it? Believing everything she does, Mahala doesn't believe in curses. This is because she doesn't believe that spirits can be influenced by someone to follow and torment a certain person. She believes that spirits will sometimes choose a person to pick on mercilessly, but not because someone told them to through the use of a curse, but simply by their own free will. The only way to influence a spirit, Mahala believes is to wear something to discourage the spirits from bothering you, like her jade ring for example. Evil spirits don't like jade.

THANK YOU:

I have a lot of thanking to do, so Ivyy, if you're tired of reading by now (which I don't blame you if you are) then you can skip this part. Well, you can in a moment anyways; first I'd like to sincerely thank you for designing this beautiful plumerian, and giving us all the chance to try to earn her. Ok, now you can skip if you want.
Next I'd like to thank everyone who helped me by creating art, reviewing my form, letting me use their plumerians, and making sure I kept true to the romani heritage (i.e. my romani neighbours, who lived in a traveling caravan as children). This includes, but is not limited to, danny., rycia, Beatnik, Mircer, PaintedSun, .o p t i m i s m., Transmasculine, hawaii-kawaii, aeiou, chirps, Sparked Angel, Vintage., Tricksters, and Chamomile. Thank you all so much for your time and talent. Whether I win or not, I never would have gotten this far with Mahala without you all. Thank you so, so very much

Disclaimers: While this character is Romani, and a thief (as is her family) I in no way, shape, or form mean to say that all Romani people are liars and thieves. That is not an intended meaning at all. This is just one character, and in no way does she represent the entire Romani people.

The fontmeme quotes are lyrics from Shakira's song "Gypsy". They are not mine nor do I claim them to be
