The nervous thump in your chest, the adrenaline of danger, the swift roar of the river. Imari is a dare devil. With this quality comes doing daring things. His absolute FAVORITE thing to do is go across large rivers. Crazy right? The best rivers to cross are the supper fast, supper wide, and about to drop into a waterfall.
The wind blew in my mane and through my tail. I shoved into the ground, hard, with my hind legs. Stretching my limbs as wide as they could go I took a mighty leap onto the rock that stood 10 feet into the river. I barley managed to make it. My hooves slid over the cold, wet, slimy surface. I tensed my muscles in frustration, desperately trying to get a good grip. Finally, I have it. Inhale, exhale. Breath. Time to go to the next rock. I close my eyes, and take in the sounds around me. When I look up, I begin to calculate how far away the next rock is. My heart beats faster. I'll never make it! Stress and fear builds up inside me, and I think to myself, "Just like Mum used to say. Head up, tail down, go for it." I lean down, my bravery building up. The adrenaline pumps through my veins, sending a chill down my back. I go for it. For a moment, everything around me freezes. The roar of the waterfall fades away. I am leaping in slow motion. I am at peace. All of a sudden everything speeds up again, as if something snapped. I'm not going to make it. My front hove hits the rock with a sickening crunch. I shriek in pain. My back legs splash in the water helplessly. The icy coldness of the river stabs at my fur, and my legs feel numb. I scream and scream, pulling with all of my might. Tears of frustration and fear roll down my face. The river tugs at me until my rump is under the water. Then my back... My hove slips. I tumble under the water, rolling and spinning. My head cracks into a rock. The rushing water seeps red, the world spins, fading. I can't breath. Which way is up? Mixtures of white and red flash across my vision. Shots of pure strain shoot through my head. I try to scream in my agony, but my lungs fill up with water. I try to cough, but only more liquid comes rushing in. It tastes metallic. Finally my head breaks the surface. I splash and splash. I cough once, twice, three times! Then I take an enormous breath before I am pulled back under. When I open my eyes, I see something unbelievable.
The ghost of a face is looking at me. In a flash I am up on a log, hacking and coughing, spasming. I slowly and painfully get to my feet. I stumble and fall towards shore. Blood surrounds me, and pain controls me. I breath heavily. I look into the water desperately looking for the face. For a second, I see it. "Mother?" I say weakly. It is gone.
Imari finally goes unconscious in a pool of his own blood. His best friend, Tsunami (my boy) found him a couple minutes later. He was then treated and taken care of. Imari learned from his mistakes.
