Above all, Alice fears becoming
emotionally attached to others.

It's a sunny day, not uncommon for southern Kansas. A single blackbird sings its lonesome afternoon song atop a dying tree.
The summer hasn't been kind this year.
Relentless sun combined with drought has ravaged the farmland, and the corn is short and wilted, not too far from death. Another week of this oppressive weather and your crops will be dead, and thus, so will you.
But what can be done to help? There's not much a mortal could affect from their run-down cottage on the sad ground.
You pace back and forth across the floor of your kitchen / dining room / living room, stopping every few minutes to look out the window and stare intently at the horizon, searching for even one gray cloud to spare your life. You have done this for the past two weeks, all in vain, nothing flies though the sky over the horizon. You haven't eaten anything substantial in four days, preparing to keep yourself alive with no crops this year, although you know it's impossible. The pigs are hungry, your cow won't produce milk.
Your dad has been gone for a month, today. Leaving to sell tomatoes to the market at the nearest town, he set off with his beat up pickup truck on a trip that usually takes a couple of days, but just didn't come back. He either finally found a girl and decided to leave his poor daughter to fend for herself, or... you'd rather not think of the other possibility. Sure, you hate the guy with all you're made of, but he's rather essential if you want to keep living.
If "barely eating enough to prevent starvation, while slaving for hours a day on an outdated farm" is anyone's idea of "living."
It's hard to stay focused in the blinding heat, which you're thankful for. At least it distracts you from your anxiety and the growing pain in your stomach.
You've recently heard that the real world has things like "televisions," "computers," "refrigerators," and so many other remarkable devices that you've never seen. The first week he had been gone, in an act of desperation, you opened the door to your father's room, hoping to find some secret sign that he'd return. All you found that were of any importance were his books, which you greedily read with haste.
What you found in the books only made you feel sicker.
All your life, your father had told you to be someone you weren't, and hidden things from you when you didn't change.
What you didn't realize, was that he had hidden an entire world from you. All your life, you had known that there was one god above your head who created houses, chairs, tables, beds... and that was all that there would ever be. Until now. Who could say what's out there now.
Outside, the sun is blocked by heavy clouds and you hear the pitter-patter of rain. You smile, but only halfheartedly. You'll live another day.
