Name: Selene
Name Meaning: [Greek] Goddess of the moon and the 'mother' of vampires
Gender: Mare
Colour: (Dark) Blue Roan
Age: Nine
Height: 12.3 hh
Personality: The older mare is typically very quiet, and observant of her surroundings. She watches over others, as if guarding them like a mother bear to her cubs. Selene knows she's relatively small and not all that threatening, but never underestimate the goddess of the night.
Domestic or Wild: Domestic
Extra:
The time is 8:00 pm, the sun doesn't begin to rise until 6:00 am. Ten hours starts now.
Selene has always been a night crawler. She sleeps through the day, and is on the prowl the second the sun sets. Like a wild cat, she stalks her way through the trees, tail flicking gently back and forth, crouched down ever so slightly. If anyone sees her now, she's likely to be caught and locked up again, and she will have failed her mission.
Her bright blue eyes are locked onto the home of her humans, waiting for the last light of the bedrooms to go off. The second the window goes dark, her mission is a-go. Selene streaks off into the night, not to be seen again until the first rays of dawn begin to peek over the hilltops.
Nine hours remain.
The moon is full tonight. High in the sky, lighting up the world around her. She's safe, now, hidden in the thickest trees, away from prying eyes. Selene walks quickly, a pep in her step. She has a lot of ground to cover tonight, especially if she doesn't want to report back with another failed report. That would be three this month, and her reputation would be severely damaged. She couldn't take any risks.
Eight hours remain.
Her job was simple. She was a hired hitman. Okay, mercenary. She was instructed to hunt down a particular target, and rough 'em up a bit, be it a threat or a good kick in the head, her job was to send a message; "Don't mess with us." 'Us', of course, being a fairly loose term. It could refer to one particular customer who'd hired her, a whole group, or anyone who hired her. She considered herself a guardian to all, a mother to anyone who needed her. You mess with one of her kids, you mess with her, too.
Seven hours remain.
This wasn't what she'd always dreamt of doing, it was one of those, "Destined to be," type of things. Selene had always wanted to be a mother, always wanted to have a family of her very own. But being a domesticated equid, made it difficult. In her home, there were no other equids. There were horses, cows, sheep, and chickens. Farm animals. While all of them made for great companionship, none could ever fill the void in her heart, the one which desired a love all her own, a family to call her own.
But that could never happen.
Six hours remain.
She was named after the goddess of the moon and the mother of vampires. Her owners saw it as fitting, considering her dark blue coat, and the single bright patch of white on her nose. She’d always been a quiet, observant mare. Nothing else was quite so fitting. Besides, she was a night-quid; active only after the sun sets.
That’s how she got her job, ya know? For her ability to stay silent under almost any pressure, for that dark blue coat that blended in so perfectly. For her love of the night and her oath to protect anyone who needed her.
Five hours remain.
She’d sworn to the oath after her first vet check-up. She was three at the time, eligible to be bred. At the time, her owners didn’t know equids could only be bred with other equids. Not that it mattered. Her test results showed that she was infertile.
Selene had cried so much upon hearing her results. Her dreams of having a family, crushed. The mother of vampires would never even be a mother. Her own namesake betrayed her.
Four hours remain.
So she'd vowed to protect anyone who needed her. Act as their mother, because she could never really be one. At first, it had just been a distraction for her, so she wouldn't feel so depressed. She would take long walks at night, and come across equines that looked... a lot like her. Various equines. Young, old, tall, short. And for whatever reason, they felt safe with Selene, comfortable with the mysterious mare. She never spoke to one of them, she merely listened to what they had to say. If they spoke of trouble, then and only then would she open her mouth. "Who did it?"
And that's how she'd been assigned her first contract. That's how this whole thing had begun. This urge to protect and help anyone who needed her, like a child needs their mother. Selene would travel to the exact location the next night, and rough up the target. Once the deed was finished, she would head home, and await her next assignment.
Three hours remain.
Living with humans often compromised her job. Sometimes, they would catch wild equids sneaking onto the property. Other times, they would catch Selene sneaking off of the property. As much as Selene loved them, she loved her children more. The contracts always came first. If she had to disappoint her humans, so be it. They all had each other. Selene? She had nothing. No mate. No biological children. Only her contracts, and the affection of her beloved customers.
Two hours remain.
That's the sad part. They're all customers in the end. They're not really her children, and she always has to remind herself. Her job is to protect those who ask for her service. And she can't fail anymore missions. If she does, they'll stop coming to her. No customers means no children, and no children means no love for the eternally broken mare.
Alas, she comes upon her still-sleeping target, and the small mare sighs. Another stallion, who'd threatened a yearling colt for being too close to his herd. He was big, battered with scars from his own battles, and obviously exhausted from protecting his herd.
Selene approaches slowly, quietly. Body crouched low to the ground, tail flicking gently side to side. She looks like a wild cat that is ready to pounce. The stallion appears to stir as she nears his sleeping body, but Selene doesn't abort the mission now. Her children needed her. "Don't mess with us."
One hour left.
She races against the clock now, flying through the forest as fast as she possibly can. Six years doing this job, and she still hadn't figured out proper time management. She thinks too much, perhaps, wallows too much in her own sadness. But that's alright. Another successful mission, complete. Her kids were happy, and so, she was happy.
She slipped into her stall with moments to spare, the little mare laid on the straw-covered ground and sighed. Selene would do anything for love. Anything for her kids. She would sleep all day to recover from her exhaustion, and work all night in order to protect them. She'd risk getting caught by her owners, having them reprimand her for trying to escape yet again. She'd risk everything to fill that void in her heart; the mother of vampires, the mother of all, who would never ever be a real mom at all.
And so the clock resets, until the next child comes crying for their mother.
