You were surprised to see the girl sitting in the grass, near
the bluff while you were walking home that night.
When she turned to look over her shoulder,
as your footsteps noisily approached, you
saw both the stars, and a moment of fleeting panic
in her eyes when you sat down next to her.
"Lost?" You asked her, a small, teasing grin
aligning itself on your face. "Hardly," she replied in a thick accent,
"The stars are my home. I am never lost beneath them."
Something silver glints in the moonlight, tangled in her hair.
Attached to a glistening ear cuff, a dream catcher stood
stark against dark locks. She quickly stilled as she felt your
eyes drift across this piece of jewelry, a question hidden
in your gaze. "It's from my motherland." She replied after
a moment, hand idly caressing the silver ear cuff, before
moving down to stroke a feather on it. "When my grandparents
moved here during war, it was a prized possession of theirs.
They believed dream catchers anchored a soul to the beholder's body,
keeping it safe from evil." You nodded, as your eyes traveled back
to the feather that was gently bouncing in the small wind.
"When grandmother passed, my mother told me too much pain
was attached to it for it to work properly on her. So now, it is mine.
It is all I have left of grandad and grandmother." She sighed at this,
twisting a strand of hair around her fingertip. Looking up quickly,
she blushed, before quickly apologizing. "I'm sorry to have taken
so much of your time. I must be going home now." She spoke quietly, before
stealing one last glance at the stars. Before you knew it, she was gone,
leaving you with questions still on your tongue for
the girl who watched stars.
